Miyamoto nominated for TIME magazine's 100 Most Influential People photo

Every year, TIME magazine compiles a list of the "100 Most Influential People in the World." Out of the 204 nominations this year, readers can vote on who they want to be in the final 100. After getting over my depression that Niero, Summa, or Ron Workman did not make the cut (they were robbed!), I quickly perked up once I saw that Shigeru Miyamoto (famed creator of Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda) made a welcomed appearance.

Miyamoto is an icon in the industry, to say the least, and he definitely deserves a place among the best. It’s just too bad that no other game designers were mentioned. I mean, come on, are you really telling me that CliffyB is less influential than Paris Hilton? Argh.

As of typing this post, Miyamoto is currently ranked #2 (right behind Stephen Colbert and ahead of J.K. Rowling), but if you want to help him maintain this position, get to voting! Wait -- Stephen Colbert, Shigeru Miyamoto, and J.K. Rowling? Did I make this list? Oh, wait, Judge Marilyn Milian is not #4. Never mind.

What do you think? Are you happy that Shiggy is representin’? Who else from the world of video games would you like to have seen acknowledged?

Although I`d agree that Miyamoto had some influence on video games, I definetely wouldn`t go so far and call him the most influential person of the year. What did he achieve this year? Oh right, I forgot: about a dozen new Mario and Zelda games. Call that influential? I`d call that repetitious.

He didn't do anything extremely noteworthy this year. Since when is that influential?

Shiggy should be up on the top 100, but as far as influential J. Allard from Microsoft should be up there. Being the guy who kick started the X box and Zune projects, and he's the one who sent the e-mail that got Microsoft started in web browsing.

I think whether or not he deserves it this year shouldn't matter. Hasn't he deserved it before now?
Anyway, if Miyamoto that might open the doors for other designers to come in later years.
If everybody who visits the site rated him 100 and rated Colbert as like 20 or something Miyamoto just could pass him.
Come on there's only a 100,000 vote gap. VOTE!

Cliffy? Is there is one guy in the game industry besides Miyamoto that deserve this, it's Will Wright.

It's hard to imagine what games would be like without Miyamoto - good for him on this nomination.

Goddamn it - when I voted, I thought voting "1" was good, but I think I fucked Miyamoto over now that I see that his average rating is "90".

I dunno, they kinda destroyed the validity of the most influential person of the year with YOU.

I don't care for Time though, so frankly I don't give an f what they think; all I know is that Miyamoto's awesome. And just FYI, any magazine with a Dilbert comic needs to get with the times.

@Cruds,
I totally agree with you on the Will Wright thing, but this is a list for late 2006/early 2007 and Cliffy ruled that time period.
Next year, though (after the release of Spore), Will Wright FTW!

So, releasing one fairly successful game, appealing mainly to hardcore gamers should earn you a spot on the 100 most influential people? Before you answer that, that would be a "no". Come on people, do you really think gears of war was more influential, on a mass scale, than the wii and DS? (again, no) That's of course ignoring the several decades of brilliant work he's done in the gaming industry. In my opinion, miyamoto has as much right to be on that list as anyone else up there(representing all of nintendo). Will wright would have been more relevant around 2000/2001 when the sims was first release. Maybe again once spore comes out.

No one else in the gaming industry deserves to be on the list more than Shiggy. He is a genius and this is long overdue. It shouldn't be just for this year. As for Will Wright, not a chance. The guy who designed Xbox and Zune? Hell no. They're not in the same league by a mile. Congratulations Shigeru, you deserve some recognition for the decades you've put into the gaming industry. Anyone else who says otherwise quite frankly just doesn't know anything about gaming.

I'm a fan of Miyamoto. The man is surely impressive. In fact, he's a genius. Most influential person of the year? Doubtful.

So the guy helped make the Wii. Okay. So the thing is a big commercial success. Okay.

Has he actually designed any new and original games in recent memory? Or have they all been rehashes of his tried and true characters? Come on, he's certainly influential but not most influential person of the year.

I wouldn't even say Colbert deserves it either. Even as a fan of his I don't see him impacting my life in any significant way whatsoever except for a few good belly laughs. Yes, he's a talking head on TV and one who happens to attract millions of viewers, but honestly. The whole thing just seems like a joke. Why does it have to be a positive influence? Hasn't George W. Bush done quite a bit in the last year to influence our nation's political standings (albeit negatively) around the world (not to mention his fleeting grip on the country's faith in him at home)? Doesn't that count for more than making a videogame system whose most beloved game is the suckass demo that is Wii Sports?

Please.

Anytime you let the internets make your decisions, you lose. Anyone else remember the time Mick Foley got voted Time's Man of the Century online back in 2000? That was so awesome.

Miyamoto deserved this since wut, 1985? hes been a huge inffluence since then and all the way up till now. I think yall could give the poor man a break, hes been making games longer than most here have been alive.

He pretty much invented video games if you think about it, And not to mention, hes the most hardcore person on the planet cuz he always kept nintendo for over 20 years with the same purpose: "To be fun for everyone" (in a kid sense), wether you like it or not. [he almost budged with the revolution, but then said, "Fek dat bytches, im keepin its Realz yo")

You deserved this long ago Miyamoto, gratz.

I think he should revive some old games that were left in the dust.
