Mistwalker wrapping up mystery project (INTRIGUE) photo

Mistwalker hasn't really done too much of note since the rather brilliant Lost Odyssey was released last year. In fact, we haven't heard from them since March, when some mysterious artwork was released. Fortunately, the studio has come out of its shell recently to confirm that it's wrapping up a new project, having been "rushed" into the final stages.

"I am working hard on a new project," blogs Mistwalker head Hironobu Sakaguchi. "Now we are being rushed into the 'finishing' stage. No matter what, I will make it really good…."

Given the quality of Lost Odyssey, I have little doubt that Sakaguchi will indeed make the next game "really good." Whether it be a sequel to last year's game, or a new concept entirely, I can't wait to see what Mistwalker comes up with. Having heard that previous Mistwalker projects were canceled, I was quite worried about the company's future, so I'm very glad to hear that things are still happening.

We'll keep an ear to the ground and let you know as soon as we hear more.

Funny enough we were joking about lost odyssey 2 being announced yesterday during the charity drive, and by joking, I mean hoping and praying with all our hearts.

I thought that was what this story was about!

B...brilliant? Lost Odyssey was a steaming pile of dissapointment. Mistwalker hasn't put out a decent game since its conception. The entire studio needs to burn and die.

Everything in this statement is false and the way you have chosen to live your life is bad.

Lost Odyssey was pretty good. It had far too many flaws though. Like 60 seconds of useless camera panning before every battle. The game was pretty damn short for 4 discs and even then it was artificially lengthened by prolonging every single fight. It also clearly recycled a lot of ideas from the Final Fantasy series.

But it's definitely among the best RPGs of the generation, it's just not that significant an accomplishment considering this generation of RPGs has been the worst in history.

Successful troll is successful.

I hope Uematsu does the soundtrack. LO's soundtrack is my favorite of this generation, RPG or not.

I'm just hoping for a likeable and artistically appealing cast. LO had a few decent characters, but also a lot of annoying ones, and the designs for several of them left something to be desired imo.

Unfortunately, the same goes for just about every JRPG this generation. The memorable characters are FAR outnumbered by the generic and just plain poorly designed ones. Please, give me a JRPG with characters I won't hate listening to or staring at for the next 40 hours...

I'm currently on disc 2 of Lost Odyssey right now. It's a wonderfully old school game, much better than the bland Blue Dragon. Whatever this studio is up to next, I'm interested. Just no more Jansen. PLEASE.

Truer words have never been spoken by a pretentious, "look at me," town cryer with nothing better to do but shit on the opinion of the majority.

You don't like the game? Great. All the rest of that was uneccesary.

Don't worry about Dx2, who clearly doesn't know what a good game is, judging by that comment.

Mistwalker done a good job with Lost Odyssey, considering they took a big brave step away from Sqaure Enix, something many japanese developers still fear even trying. Next to Valkyria and Persona 3, its one of the leading lights of how to try new stuff in jrpgs.

I'll look forward to them, showing off their new baby.

I thought Lost Odyssey was amazing... It felt more like a Final Fantasy game than recent Final Fantasy games.

Jannsen was perfect for providing comic relief to the story at times, but the twins were the characters I found to be really annoying.

I have Blue Dragon. It's a pretty decent JRPG, don't bring anything new to the genre but it holds itself. Waiting for more from Sakaguchi-sensei.

"Now we are being rushed into the 'finishing' stage."

How ominous. Seriously, why must devs always be "rushed" on things like this? Let them take the time they need to get it right.*

* - On the other hand, don't let them be Duke Nukem Forever. Truly, there is a fine line that must be walked here.

@Dx2

Why must people like you exist? *weary sigh*

With Xbox dying quick in Japan, the publisher is likely up their asses to get something out there that won't just use the platform to fund PS3 development. The other major JRPG players all self-publish to avoid this situation.

the whole "too much loading before every battle!" was way too over-dramatized by message board gamers and your comment plays along with that.
you can time it with the music, 18 seconds into battle your in control

and it might be odd to mention the recycling of old FF concepts since every JRPG is a recycled concept

I'm with Jim on this one.

I think of Lost Odyssey every day (pure love?) and I cannot express how much I appreciate Mistwalker, even if they are developing for the world's greediest company.

Frankly, I want MistWalker to come to the PS3 side. I just don't see it surviving on the 360, at least not alone anyway. I mean, MS has pulled too much crap to make me EVER want to get their console. And so I'm am sidelined from purchasing games that I like just because I hate MS as a company so much.

And, yeah, I could get a 360. Problem is...there's like 5 games total that I'd actually care to play on it. Let's see LO, Halo 3 [just because, though I could live without...but might as well get it], Fable II [and this is a maybe at best], Mass Effect and now I have to push to those that I see coming in the future. Alan Wake, this new game from MW, Mass Effect 2 [possibly PS3 bound]. Toss in some Valve games and Bioshock...

Not enough there for me to care and buy a console that WILL break sooner rather than later and a company that tends to be shoddy. Got screwed with Vista myself, not having a choice since I was going to college and needed a PC. And speaking of PC, I'd rather spend 300+ upgrading my current system to play games then spend it on a 360...

Blue Dragon 2 is also in progress right? I guess their last project "Cry On" was canceled to focus on products that already have a fan base like LO 2 or BD 2.

I hope they will do some new IP ( as long as it is coming to 360, whether
multi-platform or not I don't care ) after the sequels are finished.

I would have bought Lost Odyssey if it was for ps3, and honestly, despite underwhelming reviews, I would have bought Blue Dragon too.

That said, neither have seen "really good" reviews or success. Would be nice to see this one change that.

@Drakengaurd
Bioshock is on ps3, and brand new it's cheap on amazon. Heard some people thought it was scary, but I get more scared playing Demon's Souls tbh. Bioshock was very disappointing, but it's playable at least.

@Aperfect Pushup
I'm not sure that means they're still in MS's pocket. They've already given them 3yearsish of exclusives despite maintaining a 3rd party title. Unless those games didn't sell enough to pay them back of course.

I totally agree with you about J-RPGs recycling the same old formula since early days (which, when done properly, with a little 'soul' poured into it, doesn't bother me that much, considering many other genres and games do the same thing).
However, about LO (which I liked), 18 seconds pre-battle seems a lot of time to me. When people are shouting about 60 seconds pre-battle, I think it's just an overstatement to make it clear it's damned too long. I'm quite sure many other disc-based RPG classics are quicker, let's say under 10 sec'.(maybe I'll check).

There never was a chance that the company would go bankrupt. Mistwalker is Microsofts most promising way to make it in the Japanese market. They would pump millions into Mistwalker before giving up this opportunity.

Dear God let it be Lost Odyssey 2. PLeasepleaseplease. The first game was such a touching/fun game. The last time I had that much fun with an RPG was FFX, and that was years ago. Hopefully, if it is, they use the same team that made the first one...one of the most important, for me, being Uematsu and whoever game up with the story of the game.
