Mistwalker to cancel third project thanks to the economy photo

This "economic crisis" business is funny when it happens to morons who put too much on their credit card and like spending money they don't have, but when it affects Mistwalker, developer of arguably the best RPG of 2008, I start to give a crap.

AQ Interactive has announced that the third of Hironobu Sakaguchi's planned Xbox 360 titles, Cry On, has been canceled. Cry On was an action RPG with a Nobuo Uematsu soundtrack and character designs courtesy of Kimihiko Fujisaka. The Lost Odyssey studio was to work with Cavia, but the game's publisher no longer considers Cry On a wise investment.

"AQI decided to cancel the project after analyzing the current market environment and forecasts for the future," stated an AQ rep. "We deeply apologize for troubling those who were awaiting its release."

To be honest, I hadn't heard of Cry On until now, but it's a real shame because I think Mistwalker has serious potential as a Square Enix alternative. Unfortunately, potential is a risky investment, and risk is a terrifying prospect to publishers now more than ever before.

FFFFFFFFF, I was actually really looking forward to it compared Mistwalker's other stuff coming up. Its a shame i saw this game as kinda a spiritual successor to lost odyssey (even though we barely knew anything about it) and now I'm sad. Worst bozing day ever.

Sad to hear. Hopefully Microsoft will come in and pick up as much as they can, I would really like to see this come to market

Mistwalker did not make Persona 4, so thus they cannot be the maker of the best RPG of 2008. Arguably!

Yeah...the Japanese don't know how to do Christmas. Its supposed to be about good news. They should have waited a few days to ruin our bliss.

I actually liked some stuff in Blue Dragon and loved what I've played of Lost Oddyssey. This is kinda sad for a new studio. I was hoping it would have been the first game from them to not have paper sleeves for the discs.

Oh well, can't wait for a more focused story in Blue Dragon 2.

I am commited to finaly finishing Lost Odyssey this weekend and this sucks. Square clearly needs competition to keep them on the ball, there games of late do nothing for me.

Thank goodness! I hate mistwalker, all of their games are so generic and boring.

There was very little information on that game. All I knew was Sakugachi claiming it was a game where we would be crying every __ minutes. I can't remember the exact amount of minutes he claimed.

I'm not sure this is the economy as much as Mistwalker not making enough money from making Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, since they were exclusive to the XBox 360. It makes me wonder how long their deal is with MS and if they will start making multiplat games.

The surge in DS titles they've been making kind of makes sense now since they should cost less to produce.

Lost Odyssey sold 830,000 I believe. And Blue Dragon 500,000. For when they were out, the sales were probably taken well. Its just with the economy at the moment, they don't want to take the risk.

My 0.02$

Pushtrak: 15 minuets.

I was waiting to reek in the money from that bet.

Damnit.

Microsoft needs to step in and fund this game.
Im a big Mistwalker supporter and their games helped MS sell SOME xbox360s in Japan when they were selling NONE !

If the economy is that rough, Microsoft should just make a deal to own the IP afterwards if Mistwalker and them end up not talking to each other...

in the end they would own an IP that they can milk, one way or another when the economy picks up. That and the fact that you know that Mistwalker would move heaven and earth in order to make it a great game with all that would be at stake. Their REP and sales figures are on a great upward curve and could make it BIG !

@mister1337: Did you even play Lost Odyssey? It is probably one of the best JRPGs to have come out in the past ten years.

This news makes me sad, while although I hadn't heard of the game before now, I have been anticipating Mistwalker's next game ever since I finished Lost Odyssey.

It's easy to like LO when the alternatives are Blue Dragon, Infinite Undiscovery, Eternal Sonata and The Last Remnant ;)

I did like it though, shame about Cry On. Imagine all the horrible puns we could've made...

I wonder if Uematsu will release the soundtrack if he's already written some of it.

I think Atlus is a fine alternative to Square Enix. MistWalker's just not putting out enough games.

I enjoyed Lost Odyssey to the tune of 90 hours, but it was a dreadfully by-the-numbers RPG.

And props to TrailerParkJesus, so true.
