Mistwalker has today shared some new details for its upcoming Wii RPG, The Last Story. In the latest update, Hironobu Sakaguchi has talked about the various towns that populate Ruli Island.
The most interesting detail is how the inhabitants of each town will change their behavior periodically. Sometimes the changes will be dramatic, sometimes more subtle. Mistwalker intends to create a world that feels alive and encourages exploration, and the dynamic population is part of that. As for the design of the towns, the team has taken inspiration from France and Italy to create the architecture.
Each town is also going to be large. The game's producer laments how most towns in JRPGs these days feel too streamlined and full of dead ends, promising that the towns of Last Story are designed instead for a player to get lost in as they explore the many nooks and crannies. Random wandering is one of Mistwalker's overall goals.
I am really, really excited for The Last Story. Mistwalker seems committed to keeping the old school flavor of the classic JRPG, as evidenced by the sublime Lost Odyssey. As the Wii becomes home to more and more good looking RPGs, I'm glad to see Mistwalker contributing to the little waggle box. Should be an awesome ride!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I hope the music reflects the art style.
I also like the touches they're considering for the in-game populace. I was always fascinated by the fact that in Shenmue each NPC had a name and routine to follow. Or that each character in Zelda: Majora's Mask had schedules they'd follow and not just stay in one place.
So this could be an evolution of those concepts and its been a little thing I've been wanting to see in games. Consider me sold on a Wii for RPGs.
I'm all for innovation, but there's some things you just don't fuck with.
I was waiting for this to come up ever since you said on twitter that you wanted to have sex with them. You made me sift through and inspect EVERYTHING related to Mistwalker, including their website and twitter, though mainly their website. I can firmly say that I would have sex with them too. I got sidetracked looking at Mistwalker's pictures, but mainly the minds behind the artists. Very intriguing stuff and I thank you for this update and for making me do all that.

Yeah, I've been waiting for some decent RPGs to come out on the Wii for three years or so. Happy to see that I'll be using my little white box for something other than virtual console and Tiger Woods 10.
Wait.
Does that make sense?
Anyway, I like it.
Amen
