Mistwalker drops some spicy Last Story details photo

Mistwalker has today shared some new details for its upcoming Wii RPG, The Last Story. In the latest update, Hironobu Sakaguchi has talked about the various towns that populate Ruli Island.

The most interesting detail is how the inhabitants of each town will change their behavior periodically. Sometimes the changes will be dramatic, sometimes more subtle. Mistwalker intends to create a world that feels alive and encourages exploration, and the dynamic population is part of that. As for the design of the towns, the team has taken inspiration from France and Italy to create the architecture.

Each town is also going to be large. The game's producer laments how most towns in JRPGs these days feel too streamlined and full of dead ends, promising that the towns of Last Story are designed instead for a player to get lost in as they explore the many nooks and crannies. Random wandering is one of Mistwalker's overall goals.

I am really, really excited for The Last Story. Mistwalker seems committed to keeping the old school flavor of the classic JRPG, as evidenced by the sublime Lost Odyssey. As the Wii becomes home to more and more good looking RPGs, I'm glad to see Mistwalker contributing to the little waggle box. Should be an awesome ride!

YAY OLD SCHOOL FRANCE AND ITALY IMPLEMENTATION!

I hope the music reflects the art style.

So far both this and Xenoblade sound like the direction JRPGs should have continued in from last generation. I liked where FFXII and DQIX were going with world design, everything felt like it had a real sense of scope to it.

I also like the touches they're considering for the in-game populace. I was always fascinated by the fact that in Shenmue each NPC had a name and routine to follow. Or that each character in Zelda: Majora's Mask had schedules they'd follow and not just stay in one place.

So this could be an evolution of those concepts and its been a little thing I've been wanting to see in games. Consider me sold on a Wii for RPGs.

The Last Story + Xenoblade + Monster Hunter 3 + Dragon Quest X = Wii best 2 year on RPG

Mistwalker seems to be the only one willing to do JRPGs the way they should be done. Even Square-Enix seem to have lost what the definition of what a JRPG is.

I'm all for innovation, but there's some things you just don't fuck with.

Dynamic? How awesome would that be? Sadly though there hasn't been a game that touts dynamic gameplay over static.

Towns are boring though. It's gonna be hard for them to come up with a town that doesn't put me to sleep. W/e. Any game that'll have me using the Wii is a plus.

I hope it doesn't end up like Blue Dragon where you end up searching rocks and stuff for "nothings". That game was a completionist's nightmare. I thought Mistwalker was only developing games for the Xbox? Didn't they have to ask permission from Microsoft just to make a game for the DS?

@ Jim Sterling

I was waiting for this to come up ever since you said on twitter that you wanted to have sex with them. You made me sift through and inspect EVERYTHING related to Mistwalker, including their website and twitter, though mainly their website. I can firmly say that I would have sex with them too. I got sidetracked looking at Mistwalker's pictures, but mainly the minds behind the artists. Very intriguing stuff and I thank you for this update and for making me do all that.

I'd buy this game just to support a man and company that knows what the hell a good JRPG looks and feels like. I also find it ironic so many people are vehemently defending FFXIII while no one could give a damn about the man who created the series. "Hey kids screw that old guy over there and his loony ideas! Look at these pretty pictures!"

Yeah, I've been waiting for some decent RPGs to come out on the Wii for three years or so. Happy to see that I'll be using my little white box for something other than virtual console and Tiger Woods 10.

@Shadowiii Its on the Wii because its being co-developed by Mistwalker and Nintendo, so this is just as much a Nintendo IP as it is anything else.

Looks like the Wii might become the new DS as far as RPGS goes.

Wait.

Does that make sense?

Anyway, I like it.

Wii is already an RPG beast. I'm guessing the hype monster behind FFXIII blinder everyone to that fact. Thank God Jim showed us the light.

Let's hope the movement is smooth, fun, and not...like JRPGs. For some reason this reminds me of Zelda, Animal Crossing, and that Fantasy Life game by Level-5 and Brownie Brown.

Loved Lost Odyssey to death! But I can't say I enjoy playing my little brother's Wii. As innovative and 'revolutionary' as those controllers are, I have arthritis...
