Mirror's Edge is in first person to provide 'connection,' not regurgitation photo

The reason EA DICE went with the first-person perspective in Mirror’s Edge wasn’t to torture players who occasionally experience motion sickness. It was a conscious decision designed to make players feel more connected with the game’s protagonist, Faith, and her movements. It was also because DICE is pretty familiar with the perspective.

The producer for the game, Nick Channon recently explained the design decision in an interview with Gamasutra. Channon said that DICE has “done a lot of first person work” and were “inspired” to do Mirror’s Edge. He then went on to explain how one connects to Faith:

I think the other thing was, as well, that we really wanted to create a connection with you and the character, and the fact that you're playing the game through the eyes of Faith; as soon as you get to third person, you would be watching Faith, whereas we want you to be connected to her.

After watching Nick Chester’s video of the first level, I’m not exactly sold on the “connection” thus far. If anything, it seems like the perspective makes the game’s obstacles seem more varied and larger than what they actually are. What do you guys think? Does first person provide a special sort of immersion?

I definitely thought so. The controls were tight and you can get a sense for the shifting of weight that happens depending on what you're doing. Just straight running felt better than any game before, as it should for a title like this.

if it wasnt first person it would be Assassins

After playing the demo, I think the first person viewpoint works very well for it. I felt much more connected to the game than I did while running around as Altair in Assassin's Creed.

I think the first person view adds a lot of immersion , I think they nailed it with the sound effects as well.

I enjoyed the demo and will probably purchase the game

@dfielder

I agree about the sound, it's extremely well-done and very influential to the immersion factor.

people still get motion sick from video games? I guess it will be another few generations that gets breeded out.

The immersion was so huge that after playing the demo I was sweating and out of breath.

Naw, the immersion is there as you get a nice feel when you are sprinting and you turn, you almost lean when you play.

I like the first person view. I also enjoy hearing about the same people who got motion sickness from Portal having the same problem with this.

I can't imagine the game without it, I thought the first person perspective was the whole reason for this games existence.

I think that the first person view is really what sets this game apart from other games with free running elements (Assassin's Creed, PoP), as it makes you feel immersed with the game. Especially the way that Faith's head sways side to side, and how you actually gain speed the longer you run for, really bring you into the game.

I can't wait for this game when it comes out on the 13th. If the whole game is as good as the demo was, I think that this game will be winning quite a few game of the year awards.

ghettosmurf already pointed out the weight thing, but in addition to that, this game really uses physics on an entirely different level. I think this game has the most realistic interpretation of inertia ever. And if you have surround sound, it really amps up the immersion.

However, I think the most immersive part of the design choice is the sense of urgency it promotes. Finding yourself in a dead end and looking everywhere to climb up onto something. All the little things that would be really simple if you had a 3rd person view.

Takes some getting used to but first person is definitely the best fit for this game.

Also what you're saying doesn't even make any sense. You need to actually be playing to connect to a character, not watching a video.

More developer jargon to make them sound better than they really are. I'd respect them more if they came out and said 'We just really know how to make a FPS and have some code laying around, so we decided to do something a little different with it this time.'

Still, I realy really want to try this game.

I don't know why some complain about the first prison view in this game. I think it's perfect for it.

I don't think I would be as interested in this game if it was third person. I can say I pretty much agree with most of whats already been said on how great the first person is.

I'm also not sure how great Nick Chester's video is to go on. I don't want to sound like I'm flaming, but he kinda sucked.

First person is what sells this title for me. If it was 3rd person I'd probably skip it.

All true, but we all know that first person platforming usually sucks hard (HL anyone?). Interesting challenge, I want to read reviews.

The first person really "struck" me the first time I fell of the side of a building. The way they give you a split second to look down, and the way they don't cut away until right before you hit are terrifying to me. Certainly makes some of the jumps feel a bit scarier.

The immersion is definitely there but it goes away whenever I have to aim to grab something in a jump. Hell, I don't even have to look at it once I know its there. Why?

I think the close quarters stuff makes it nearly vital; in Crackdown, every time you try and climb up the inside of a narrow tower the camera flips the fuck out. I've played a number of third person games with similar problems - and the solutions to the camera placement issues the narrow walls provide often leaves you unable to judge distance or direction.
Mirror's Edge doesn't have this problem at all.

Having finally gotten a chance to DL the demo earlier today, I certainly wouldn't say that a first-person perspective automatically equals greater immersion than third-person, but in this case I think it's executed rather well - it does take a bit of getting used to, but I was impressed by the overall effect. Not to mention, this is coming from a guy who almost never plays FPS-type games - this one has something that managed to get my attention, though I suppose I'd need to think before putting my finger on it.

The first person view works for this game much better. It seems to give more depth and feel to whats going in, not to mention looking down at a street far below is far more intimidating in first person.

Okay.. I'm ready.

I played the demo and didn't like it. It just didn't jive with me, at all. I'll stick to Fallout.

@Chronic Logic:
There is another DICE developed game series that has all your "fucking guns". It's a game where you can run headfirst into danger. Where you have body armor so you can withstand more than one shot.

It's called Battlefield, and Bad Company is pretty good. Go play that.

Mirrors Edge is a brilliant game. It plays, and looks like no game like it. Running away takes a LOT of strategy, and that makes the game lots of fun. The perspective suits the game, and the lack of a HUD really helps you feel connected to the world. The "runners vision" is helpful without being too blunt. It's just a shame that a game like this is lost on those who think a first person view is only for shooters.

Did nobody here ever play Breakdown?

Its a Namco done in this same style except it had a bit more martials and no more parkour, the main character moved like a human would, it was a nice change of pace from FPS games that cast you as arm with gun.

I hope this game does well, it looks fantastic.

seconded tsbaron. as if there aren't enough fps's out there with all the fucking guns and all the fucking armor, and all the running straight into 20 enemies guns blazing.

Being one of those gamers that occasionally experiences motion sickness - like when you're jumping from building to building, and tumbling a lot, and mid-air stuff is fun...I really prefer they make it OPTIONAL to be in first person view.

The concept is cool, and as a third person game I'd be all for it...So sad.

I've tried the demo and I must say it's what Sonic games should feel like... Immersive to the max, and you gotta thank the bouncy first person cam for it.

@Kathos: Indeed, I didn't like the sixaxis "tacked on" movements either, I prefered using the alternative the game offered for each move for those like us who don't feel twisting your hands outwards feels like "rolling". Let's be happy the game offers those button alternatives...

This would be a whole other game if it was third person, and much less interesting. MUCH less interesting. The whole parkour scheme is very much immersive because of the first person perspective. I mean, come on, to even ask the perspective to be optional, is an insult to the game and its developers.
