As promised, Mirror's Edge DLC is on the way. The "Pure Time Trial Pack" is a selection of "stylized" time trial stages which, as you can see from the above video, look like some sort of drug experiment gone horrible wrong.
If the original Mirror's Edge gave you motion sickness, prepare to blow chunks in salty abundance this time around. There will be eight maps, and the pack is due to ship in January. Electronic Arts has promised that further details are on the way.
Yeah ... you are going to vomit. No question.
[Update: EA has issued a press release confirming a release date of January 16 and a price of 800 MS points on Xbox Live or $10 on the PSN. Hit the jump for more.]
Award-winning Action Adventure Game Delivers Fresh Content to Challenge Even the Best Runner
Guildford, UK. – Dec 4, 2008 – Leave the city behind! DICE, an Electronic Arts Inc. studio (NASDAQ: ERTS), today announced that the highly acclaimed first-person action adventure title, Mirror’s Edge™ will release downloadable content (DLC) for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system and the PC in late January. DICE also confirmed today that the PC version of the game will ship to retailers in North America on January 13th and worldwide on January 16th, 2009.
Players will be challenged to achieve the fastest times possible on nine races across seven all-new and totally redesigned Time Trial maps. No guns, no cops, and no city: this is true aesthetics, agility and flow that will challenge any runner. This special DLC pack will be available for $10 USD or 800 Microsoft points. As an added bonus, all PLAYSTATION 3 Mirror’s Edge fans will be able to download an additional map for free.
“The freedom of movement and control in first person has been the most popular aspect of Mirror’s Edge so we decided to distil these down to their purest form for this map pack,” says Owen O’Brien, Senior Producer, DICE. “We deliberately chose a more abstract aesthetic that is still within our distinctive art style and then focused on flow and gameplay to create an experience and challenge very different from the main game.”
Time Trial is a popular mode in Mirror’s Edge that challenges players to find the fastest route across various maps. Players can upload their best time to the Mirror’s Edge leaderboards for their friends to download and compete against. Players can see their friend’s ‘ghost’ run as they race their way through the course to the top of the leaderboards.
Mirror’s Edge was awarded “Best Xbox 360 Game” at the recent GC Developers Conference in Leipzig, Germany. It also received the “Best Action Game” of Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) by IGN and the Game Critics Award for “Best Original Game” at E3 in July. Mirror’s Edge delivers players straight into the shoes of Faith, a modern day heroine who traverses the vertigo-inducing cityscape, engaging in intense combat, fast-paced chases and challenging puzzles. With a never-before-seen sense of movement and perspective, players are drawn into Faith’s dangerous world.
You know the time trails were actually my favorite part of that game, so I am very interested in picking these up. Call me crazy, but I just loved this game!
I must admit.... that looks fucking brilliant. The song was fantastic too... anybody care to ID it? Sounded a little like Bjork in places, but doesn't seem like her kind of track.
Is that a remix of the theme tune? Never listened to the full piece so I dunno if that is a remix or just a part of the tune they don't play in the trailers.
Finally, true DLC! Not just "more levels" or "new skins" that probably was held back from inclusion on the disc, but really unique content. This would never be possible as a stand alone game (or sequel to the original), but only through DLC.
Call me crazy, but I don't think a large empty space filled with a bunch of floating textureless colored blocks is good DLC. I mean, really, how long did it actually take them to slap these levels together?
I don't see why anyone is praising this. It's actually pretty easy to see why it popped up so soon after the games release.
Put out some DLC that actually makes the game longer and seem more like a full game, then it might be worth getting.
Ok coming from a guy that completed this game in one weekend (about 10 hours during the Balitmore NARP) I can honestly say that this looks like shit. $10 for a DLC pack for a game that has a buggy physics engine and collision detection at best, is retarded. I would rather go buy weed...or candy bars. Maybe both.
I think its easy to dismiss "a large empty space filled with a bunch of floating textureless colored blocks" as a cheap cash in. But, having played the time trials, level design built around the free running mechanic can look incredibly lazy and incidental. Things that look like window dressing or completely functionless end up having a great amount of function.
DanGale: Same as after the first video it was in to love the game, now it is in to hate the game. Especially for people, who haven't played the game.
Also this is a very polarising game. I can see, why people don't like the game, but I personally really like it. I too had no problems with the physics or the collision.
Interesting that they went the abstract route. Lifting the burden of creating realistic environments should make it easier for the level mappers to design some interesting challenges.
I do have to admit though, taking the rooftops and real objects out of the maps robs it of some of the context that makes the game so exhilarating to begin with. But these are just 'challenge rooms' more or less, so I guess it's not that big of a deal, but the maps definitely won't be as memorable.
That being said, this is still probably the first DLC I've ever considered getting.

Wow, I just listened to the original version of that song, and I was completely unimpressed. This remix, though...it's just fucking incredible. I subscribe to Rhapsody, and I was surprised to see that they have the entire album there. I just bought this track, though.
Hmmm...well, it looks like the "exclusive PS3 DLC" for this game does actually exist, sort of, since there's apparently an exclusive free map in it for PS3 owners. As for the pack, I liked Mirror's Edge and I'm tempted, but not completely sold...maybe after I see a bit more footage.
This looks like the bonus levels in Super Mario Sunshine: brightly colored platforms suspended in mid-air with absolutely no context other than "get to the end," just pure platforming. Looks really trippy, but I guess we'll wait to see how good they are.
Glad I'm not the only one who was remindd of sunshine :-D
This looks brilliant! Just proper, pure platforming awesomeness.
If we and developers weren't so compelled with realism and storyline perhaps mirror's edga could've been completely like this! Now that would be awesome!
