Mirror's Edge 2 confirmed, currently being developed photo

Electronic Arts has faith in Mirror’s Edge despite lackluster sales. The publisher’s European head honcho recently confirmed a sequel is in the works and that a small development team at DICE is currently working on the property.

Speaking with VideoGamer at E3 2009, EA Europe’s Patrick Soderlund said, “You’ll see another Mirror’s Edge for sure. It’s just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it. We have a small team on it and I’m excited about what we do.”

“Mirror’s Edge was a risky move,” he said before dropping the Mirror’s Edge 2 bombshell. “It was a bold move, a very innovative and inspiring move. The game wasn’t perfect by any means. We would have liked the game to sell better even though the game has sold better than most people think.”

We stand behind any new IP that can make people vomit. Let’s hope Mirror’s Edge 2 raises that bar: the world needs a game that can make eyes bleed, or better yet, cause people to catch the flu.

"a very innovative and inspiring move"

Now now, it wasn't THAT innovative. Actually it wasn't at all.

“Mirror’s Edge was a risky move,”

I wish they would shut up about this. I guess I'll get this game anyway.

If they fix the problems of the last game then they will have a hit on their hands.

I really liked the mechanics in this game, but they didn't really flesh it out as much as one could hope.
And as in the rev rant, the story didn't really work in this format.

And also, like all raving fanboys has to say: multiplayer or tits gtfo k thx.

Capture the flag in this game would be awesome, don't you think? 3v3 or more. Mmh!

Great news! I loved Mirror's Edge, despite it's flaws. The Time Trials were especially addicting. Hopefully DICE will learn from their mistakes and ME2 will be an awesome game.

Mirrors Edge was great at a lot of things. They just made it suck at some things, and then designed levels around those things (like fighting enemies who have powerful weapons when you have nothing). I look forward to this.

i like the first one over all especially the free running levels but the combat sucked balls lets hope they learn to not force confrontation or if they do give us a gun we can reload with some decent shooter elements while free running could be an improvement but just free running for the entire game would be frackin awesome

Good to hear. I just hope they don't lose the feeling that you needed to run to survive. If guns or even hand-to-hand combat becomes an iWin button, that's a total fail in my book.

Open-world and MP features would be a neat addition, but not essential for me.

I can see where you're coming from, because I make claims like that, but "not innovative at all". Can you give me one other realistic 1st person free running game? I've been dreaming of a game like Mirror's Edge since I was 10 years old. The closest I ever got was Jumping Flash, and it's sequel.

Mirror's Edge was such an unappreciated game (OMFG NO GUNPLAY LOL CLIFFY B BIGGER BETTER BADASS). Play the entire game without guns, then do the time trials after: it's a blast.

Yeeeeey to this news and finally someone (Magnalon) agreeing with me. I finished everything this game had to throw at me and I still love the game, the PURE time trials are hard as fuck. ME1 is one of my favourite games of all time, honestly.

Hence why I got the T-shirt :P

Fuck YES to a Mirrors Edge 2, I wouldn't even mind if it was the same game but added a whole new story :)

@Zippy And Magnalon

I never finished all the time trials. But, just going into those and seein gwhat they want you to do really highlights how smart the level design is. In most cases, they're unchanged from their original level, but there are new ways to approach going from point A to point B.

There's one where I pull off a 30 drop leap-of -faith type move, shaving off a good 4 or 5 seconds :)

I don't get the negativity about this game. The gunplay sucks? Well, I wouldn't know because I never fired a gun in the game because IT'S NOT A FPS! Your supposed to RUN! Although in a few parts you DO have to defeat some enemies, you don't have to shoot them.

That aside, there's definitely room for improvement. Navigation could be a chore to figure out, I stopped playing at the ship level towards the end because I couldn't deduce how to get to where I needed to go. Also, your moves could feel a little funky at times. But as a whole, I think it was an exceptional first effort for what it was going for and it was indeed innovative (and FUN) in my opinion.

And props to EA for allowing a sequel to an underselling yet forward thinking game. It's amazing how much EA has earned my respect in the last few years. Watch and learn Activision

Dear lord people. 1st person platforming DOES NOT WORK! It's broken and although it can be aceptable it feels disconnected as though it would work so much better in 3rd person and the genre should be burnt in a big o bonfire. Sorry but Mirrior Edge is pretty much a Marmite game. I think it's overrated but I can understand that this game obviously had a better effect on some people (Maybe it's just the PC version that gives me that feel?)

@Hammersmith

If this game does indeed work with Natal then my whole opinion is null and void but playing a game like this with a controller feels empty.

I definitely enjoyed the game and plan on going through again soon to get more trophies... few games can make me go from feeling awesome to freaking out and wanting to kill anything in sight as quickly as Mirrors Edge. And for some reason, I think that's a compliment.

@Rational Animal - I really liked the game, but that still made me laugh.

I just hope this time around they are a little more forgiving when trying to grab onto things. That was the only real problem I had, and it was really flow breaking to die because I was *just* slightly misaligned with a pipe or edge. Well, I also didn't like falling 6 feet, but because it was "out of bounds" it counted as a death. Open world would be nice.

WHOOO!

And I thought M.E. 1 worked perfectly fine. If any particular part of it needed work it was the mediocre combat.
Though for what it's worth, I wonder if the upcoming Brink's "smart-button" thing will make free-running controls obsolete.

Exactly, the time trials blew my mind: they're a bunch of puzzles stuck in a platforming game (genius). Of course, many people didn't even know these existed, because they probably dismissed the game halfway through due to "shit gunplay". Sigh.

@Golden
First person platforming is fine. I only had trouble during one part of Mirror's Edge the entire time I played. I felt like the "grabbing ledge" mechanic worked very often, preventing death. Also, play the PS3 version instead.

Also, Metroid Prime :D

My biggest issue with Mirrors Edge was that it expected you to to keep up a fast pace and pretty much jump blindly off of rooftops. Which meant you spent a lot of time going splat into the pavement below and having to reload from last save point. So the flow really wasn't there as you had to constantly redo jumps until you got them right. The game needed more grab points, like in inFamous.

Too the combat didn't really work well either.

I hope they explore more the history in the sequel.

I loved the first one. It wasn't without it's flaws, but the art direction, the music, the gameplay, I loved it. Sure the characters, story and some of the voice acting was lame, but still, it's a really fun experience and I look forward to a sequel. I've already played through the first one 3 times already. I will probably do more to find all the hidden packages and the speed runs and all that. There's a lot to do.

I can dig it. And frankly, I don't think there's much I'd want them to change. I suppose the shooting mechanics could stand to be tightened up, but then, I probably spent 1% of my time playing this game actually shooting.

You can place me firmly in the "very happy to hear this" camp, as I was afraid that the first ME might end up as a one-time experiment - kudos to EA for being willing to stick with a good idea and iron out the kinks. I liked the first one enough to be pretty confident in saying I'll almost certainly buy the sequel.

I just hope they re-emphasize what the game really should be about, which is, of course, running and jumping around in an urban environment like a monkey. Sure, there's nothing wrong with having antagonists chase you, but something's horribly wrong when you can just snatch a SAW, turn around, and waste your pursuers.
