The last time we talked about Minitroid, I told you that I found the game comforting. Metroid: Other M was just about to see release, and I was scared the game would be too different. While Other M looked scary and unknown, Minitroid looked old and familiar. At the time, that made Minitroid the hotter option for me.
Now Other M has come and gone, and I'm still hungry for some classic 2D Metroid action. Mintroid looks like it will deliver on that. Even though it's just free PC game, it's one of my most anticipated titles right now. I can't wait to see how they pull off Ridley at that resolution.

Do want. As one of the few people who seem to be really enjoying Other M, (even if I am playing it slowly as hell, only about 20 minutes a day.) I'm excited for any and all things Metroid. Thanks for showing me this!
STill mystified as to what was so scary about Other M. It followed the flow of Fusion, which it never made any effort to hide.
Then again I've come to realize that for the [i]Ocarina[/]i generation, Metroid Prime is their Super Metroid and as such, they'll just refuse to be objective about any other take on the series. Oh sure, they'll talk a good game about Super Metroid, but play it? You'd be surprised how many haven't played it.
I liked Other M like I did Fusion. Not an all-time fave, but something I'll come back to and replay every new and again. It was really just the soundtrack that was underwhelming for me. Team Ninja was given a serious challenge in making that game and did a respectible job.
I would be interested to see what Retro Studios could do with that engine, particularly now that Metroid Prime just feels a like it wore out its welcome after Corruption. I mean, really, four grapple beam upgrades?
I haven't played much Other M so far, but I quite like its new action focus. We always criticize Nintendo for never doing anything new, something like Other M comes out, and people spend all of their time complaining about it, it's a real shame. Even if it's not perfect, Nintendo is finally taking risks, and in my opinion, that should be appreciated.
Also, when did SR388 and all those other cool Metroid 2 remakes vanish? They held more interest to me than Minitroid, despite its charm.
The more Metroid we can get, the better. Despite being an awesome franchise from Nintendo, Metroid always finds itself trailing behind Mario and Zelda in terms of popularity and title releases. It's been saddening to see the Metroid fanbase splintered between the generation of those who prefer the gameplay style offered by the Prime sub series, and those who just love to accompany Samus on any mission she undertakes (even if it is a pinball cash in title). I loved Metroid Other M's faster paced approach to the Metroid formula. As was stated earlier by another user, Other M was more akin to Metroid Fusion. I've heard people complain that the game can be beaten in under 10 hours. As a rebuttal: last time I checked, it was possible (and encouraged) to speedrun ALL of the 2d metroid titles in under 3 hours.
Although I feel the Prime series was fantastic and extremely well executed, I don't see why so many fans have taken it upon themselves to make it the template upon which every new Metroid title should be judged. It was a great interpretation of the classic gameplay elements done in first-person (with a little Soul Reaver puzzle-play thrown in for good measure), but lets not be afraid to see Samus explore in different ways (i.e. Other M).
Just look at the thousands of webgames out there with Mario in them, but Nintendo doesn't do anything. I think Nintendo only sends a C&D when the developer is going to find some way to squeeze some cash out of their licenses.
Yeah, all right. But whether you make it for profit or not doesn't matter legally.
And most of those webgames with Mario are either too obscure or more loveletters to Nintendo (case in point: SMB Crossover) than anything.
Although I guess you could argue that last point with Minitroid as well.
...I'm not sure where I was going with this anymore. I guess my point is that this game can only exist if Nintendo lets it. Which I very much hope they will.
God, it looks so satisfying to blast enemies. I love how the screen shakes, and the sound effects- it makes it seem like Samus' normal blasts are super powerful.
I usually hate the "retro flashback" games that seem to be coming out in swarms lately, but yeah. Do want, and will pick up as soon as it's released. It really does look amazing.
@ShadeOfLight - Nintendo is usually pretty good about this kind of thing. They tend to leave the fans alone if they make these kind of games, long as it's totally free. As soon as you put up a donate button though, usually when the C&D letters begin. And think they're one of the few companies that got "whitelisted" on Little Big Planet, where they actually told MM not to bother modding all the mario levels and other properties. Could be wrong on that though.
Over the years Metroid games have come and gone... I've only played and beaten the original perennial classic, Metroid(years ago), and the beyond amazing Super Metroid(fairly recently). Right now I'm insanely hooked and enjoying the hell out of Other M(bad reviews were bad). It seems, after all these years, the Metroid saga, finally, has a tight grasp on my attention.
Minitroid looks incredible. It will definitely have my attention, that is, until I can psyche myself up to begin the Wii Prime trilogy collection.
Pray for a true peace in space.
It's too bad that Other M is being discounted by the gaming community b/c that game updated the 2d-ish beat 'em up in a way that was pretty incredible. And it had the Metroid feel (it was a more open game than Fusion) on top of it.
Great game, overdramatic soundtrack, ok story, not a bad stab at characterization.
I was hoping that Other M would = New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but no such luck... this time. Not that Super Paper Mario is bad or anything. It's just not one of the all time greats.
@ Everybody- This isn't a remake of Metroid 2, or any Metroid. It's an all new game, though I do see a lot of elements of Super Metroid in this particular video.

Just got the grapple beam, now on the weird ghost ship place :( spooky.

A D-Pad only in a 3D game? No thankyou.
If this is a remake of II, Ridley won't be in there. But even if he would, it would just look more like the NES version.

Other M it's a good game: SOLID mechanichs, SOLID story.
Fan game; not for profit.

Metroid = Super Mario Bros
Super Metroid = Mario 3
Metroid Prime = Mario 64
Other M = Super Paper Mario

Ooh. I don't know. I thought the original Metroids were fairly sub-par games.
I do want me some more Metroid though.
