Hot off the release of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock for every console on the market, I bring you one of gaming's more subtle minibosses. Yes, I am indeed referring to the dreaded Orange Fret Button. Many pinky fingers have been slaughtered and many songs have been failed due to this silent killer. Even now, there are thousands of people screaming in united agony trying to nail some of those solos in "Through the Fire and Flames" on Expert. Why? Mostly because of the fatal fifth fret -- a button which single-handedly gave the Guitar Hero series an actual level of difficulty.
Some of you out there might feel that today's miniboss is a joke. A simple, orange, plastic button. Nothing more, you say? I think not! The Orange Fret is unlike any of its four colored brethren. It feels miles away from the rest. It is unrelenting, unforgiving, unflinching and indiscriminate to the lives it takes and the souls it consumes. Sure, anyone and their grandmother can beat songs on Easy and Medium, but the moment you first took the plunge and attempted Hard mode, everything changed.
Many have worked tirelessly to perfect their slide. Others try best to use the old "Go Go Gadget-Pinky" technique. Regardless of what style is chosen, the difficulty of the Orange Fret Button is undeniable.
What about you, Destructoid community? How well did you fare the first time you and the Orange Fret tangled? More than likely, it wasn't very pretty.
Oh, Necros already said the same thing...
also, cocks
I think since I can actually play the guitar, the whole pinky orange button thingy doesnt seem like much of a big deal to me
The orange fret has claimed many pinkies, and still continues to piss me off today. Minibosses are good at that.. pissing gamers off.
So yes I've suffered.
Now I have 4 stars on all experts!
And the orange fret hasn't bothered me since 2 months after the release of GH1.
it just takes a little getting used to. the best piece of advice i remember hearing regarding the orange button is not to necessarily position your hands any differently, eventually the proper adjustments become natural and thoughtless.
3 button chords are the real bastard of GH. especially those that use the orange button.
Easy is too cold.
Medium isn't warm enough.
Expert is too hot.
Hard is juuuuust right.
And then I get eaten by a bear.
Horrible, I hates it!
Age 12: tried & failed guitar lessons (realized lack of musical talent)
Age 24: Bought Guitar Hero 3 (still scared of blue button, let alone the evil incarnate orange one.)
It made things worse for a bit, but ultimately really paid off with practice.
FreeBird!
Thank you, Guitar Hero, for helping me enjoy that episode of My Name is Earl that much more.
I fail at Guitar Hero.
/Can five star almost all the songs on expert now
//Damn you Jordan, damn you Six!
///Came with 400 points of five starring Six twice *weep*
So I'm fucked whenver I try the hard songs on hard or anything on expert.
Personally I think GH at first is interesting, but only when you start catching on the Expert songs, THEN it gets _FUN_.. ^______^
I don't have just one style for hitting it though. Depending on the song, I'll either move my whole hand up and down the fretboard, or I'll just move my pinky down to hit the orange button, OR I'll dock my hand in the lower position and just move my index finger up to hit the green button.
I'm sure I could have gotten but I'm a quitter and I stopped.
That orange fret button will drive me to homicide. There's no way to "teach" someone how to use it. Whether you slide or try stretching your pinky you really just have to learn how to do it. Which I don't think is ever going to happen.
Oh well...Dragonforce on Easy?!
