Miniboss Monday: Crocomire

12:56 PM on 11.05.2007   |   Savant

Today's Miniboss Monday is one of my personal favorites and is an extremely memorable fight for many who completed Super Metroid back in the day. Crocomire is by no means a difficult or exciting opponent to fight, but what makes him so great and memorable? There's a simple answer to that one -- his inevitable death.

Ol' Croco is a fairly straight-forward opponent. All you need to do is shoot missles down his throat when he opens his yapper and he'll move back a few steps. Lucky for you (and unlucky for him) there's a conveniently placed lava pit just a few yards behind the eight-eyed foe. Push him towards it, and break out the popcorn for one of the more gruesome deaths in the 16-bit era outside of Mortal Kombat.

Here's the kicker; once Crocomire takes his soothing lava bath, you will notice air bubbles drifting off to stage left. "Jinkies!" Velma exclaims. Obviously, this subtle cue would tell you to follow as something just isn't quite right. Upon reaching the end of the corridor, the spiked wall falls to bits and one of those "Oh SNAP!" moments takes hold of you -- the skeletal remains of Crocomire lunge at you. Both this moment and the epic death scene before it solidify Crocomire's fight in the back of our minds even to this day.

Do you remember facing Crocomire for the first time? I certainly do. That's all for this week's MBM. Got any suggestions or ideas to contribute for future Miniboss Mondays? Be sure to send 'em in to us at tips@destructoid.com.

I definitely jumped the fist time I fought him and had that skellaton break through the wall, I also remember dying a few times as I ran out of missiles and got pushed into the spikes.

Poor little guy. I kinda felt bad for him. Still trying, even though he was just a skeleton.

That was beautiful. There is a reason why Super Metroid is one of the best games ever made

I remember this very well, since the first time playing S Metroid was when the PS1 came out, so I was maybe 12 or 13. Still, it was pretty awesome when his skeleton tries to finish the job.

I recall Crocomire, not-so friendly fellow, but put up quite a fight. Especially when it gets more fierece, even until death. Can never forget a moment like that one.

This reminds me of the sword boss on Donky Kong Country 2.

Why have I not seen this boss yet?

I suck at Metroid games, but I guess exploring the world itself is fun...

That freaked me out the first time I fought him. I thought I was going to have to fight him in undead space alien form until he crumbled.

I remember, the boss music always got me tense. I also was all "Wow!" when he came back from the dead. Also I hadn't noticed the bubbles until now, awesome.

That really was horrificly violent for a SNES game.

Epic. It took me awhile to figure out that I wasn't hurting him, and that I had to push him back. I was just about to the spikes with my missles depleted when I figured out a charged shot from my Arm Cannon could work. That was a hard-fought battle.

And then the bubbles...

Ah sweet, sweet memories. I was just thinking about how awesome Super Metroid was the first time I played it. I still love going through it again but nothing tops your first time.
