Last night, I got to check out a number of Codemasters’ upcoming games. Of all the games on hand, I’m looking forward to Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising the most. I’m a fan of military shooters, but I have never liked how linear all of the military games typically are.

Flashpoint throws out the linearity and gives players a 134 square mile island to explore. Players are given mission objectives, such as taking over a key point, but players will have complete freedom in how they want to complete the objective.

The scope of the island is absolutely amazing. Since the island is completely open, I asked one of the developers just how long it would take to walk across the entire island. It would take about three hours to walk the entire thing!

Granted, walking will get boring so there’s a nice assortment of vehicles on hand too. There will be over 40 vehicles ranging from boats, jeeps, tanks and helicopters, all for the taking. There will also be over 60 different types of weapons for players to use such as shotguns, snipers, pistols and more.

There’s going to be a robust AI system in place as well. You can control three AI units within your squad by giving them orders through the quick command menu. You don’t always have to babysit your teammates though, as you can tell them to just follow you. The enemy AI seems to be pretty smart too, as I saw one running for cover when he heard the shells of a Howitzer about to hit his base.

Flashpoint will support up to four-player co-op and there will be some kind of versus mode, which we’ll learn more about later this year. Otherwise, expect a Summer release for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

"Flashpoint will support up to four-player co-op"

Hook, line, and sinker.

I'm looking forward to this, especially the open world aspect.
Hopefully it expands on what Far Cry 2 did, but without the gamebreaking bugs. I'm still on 88% and waiting Ubisoft!

The original Flashpoint was totally awesome. I hope this is just as good and that the PC version isn't horribly crippled at the beginning like Far Cry 2 was. Ubisoft do really, really shit PC ports.

I owned the original Flashpoint and it was definitely something unique. I would utterly buy it on the console.

@RJG Ubisoft? Is this true? I don't understand why Codemasters would let Ubisoft do the PC port.

Wow, that sounds cool. The kind of direction ive wanted a shooter to take for quite a while now, and only FarCry 2 has come close (and yet, so far...). Hopefully they dont screw it up.

@Volomon: My mistake. I did mean Codemasters, but for some reason typed Ubisoft. That said, Codemasters have been offering shit support for their PC games of late. One look at the mess that is Rise of the Argonauts on PC and the complete lack of anything regarding a patch ever coming for it ever is a testament to that.

A realistic military FPS.

I can't wait to see/hear all the 360 kids from CoD... Or in general cry over the game, dubbing the game as rubbish, when its them who are.
