Minds blown: Criterion adding motorbikes, night time to Burnout Paradise photo

I'm not going to complain that Criterion are releasing too many damned Burnout Paradise updates and that they're getting hard to keep up with. OK, fine -- I am. There's a "Bogart" update, a "Cagney" update, and then there's this damned "Davis" update. But it's hard to stay mad at Criterion because the "Davis" update will bring -- take a seat -- night time and motorbikes.

Holy crap.

"Because we're dedicated to bringing you game-changing new Burnout Paradise content all year," Criterion writes on their official blog, "bikes will feature their own game modes, challenges and even some new locations tailored to fit their unique performance and handing characteristics."

I repeat -- holy crap. The update will hit sometime in August, and while no pricing has been set, if you think this kind of content isn't going to come at a premium, you're nuts. And if you're going to complain about having to pay for it, that also means you're nuts (and possibly dense).

The after-crash videos are gonna be so, so, SO much fucking better now.

I really hope it's not just a rider-less motorcycle. I can't suspend my belief anymore than I've already had to.

This has actually gotten me excited for Paradise. After the demo, I wasn't really too keen on picking it up. But there's just something about Bikes and nighttime that can make a game instantly appealing to me. Fix the whole "Restart whenever you want" factor, and I'll definitely give this a better consider.

I bet the crashes will be all pre-driven animations like the cars crashes. I don't think there will be ragdoll, but I FUCKING hope!

Dude there HAS to be ragdoll! It would be so gay if there wasn't!

there really does have to be ragdolls... is it possible for them to use Euphoria? prbably not, since it seems they already have a physics engine in the game.

haha, seems like they have a physics engine.

i'm so clever. :P

This update is awesome. This is the way DLC should be done (assuming they don't gouge us on pricing).

@Tazar

I'm relatively certain that's a screen shot so riders are in. But yeah. I'm wondering how they're going to handle the addition of humans to the Burnout world. Maybe they should just make them robots. That would be awesome....

Definatly cool here. Something tells me this might spawn an entire Burnout game focused on Motorcycles with more ragdolling than Pain.

I tried the demo but didn't really like the open world racing that much, especially after you lost a race and had to find the starting line again instead of having a retry option.

Oh god, I'm so happy I got Paradise. I haven't really played it much after dropping 20 hours into it the first few weeks I had it (all of that time was spent exploring, too, I hardly did any races or anything), but all these awesome updates will get me hooked on it again.

I <3 Burnout.

As of right now, Criterion, Infinity Ward, and Harmonix are the only developers who are really doing DLC right. I wish everybody else would follow suit.

Why do you say that infity wards are doing DLC as far as i have seen they have only done one patch( well they have done more but im talking about the map patch ) not more. What about activision? i know GH3 prices are outrageous but still they have done more than plenty.

@xioner

GH3's DLC initiative isn't all that great. Irregular releases that are WAY too spread out and erratic, prices that are a little higher than they should be, and forced packs are a few of the problems with it. It's not outright terrible, but they could do a lot better especially when Rock Band's DLC plan makes GH3's look amateurish.

So what is the difference now between Midnight Club and Burnout Paradise?

They both have open cities to race through, and they both have hot cars, racing at ridiculous speeds and bikes vs cars races...

thing is, open-city-racing was simply perfected by the Midnight Club series and The open-city-racing from burnout doesn't even come close to the racing in MC i think...
boxmyth's Avatar
boxmyth at 04/23/2008 15:31
@ mistic: plow your fuzzy little Midnight Club car into another car head on and see what happens. Then do the same with a Burnout car. THAT'S the difference.

I've never played Midnight Club but I guess I'll try the new one coming out. Really Burnout is more about the crashes and the over the top speed more than anything else. For example, my favorite mode is Road Rage where the goal is to crash as many of your opponents as possible and isn't about racing at all.

Personally, I wish Burnout's races would close off certain roads and make makeshift circuit tracks out of the open world. Then open it back up whenever you you come out of a race. I'm still not really down with the completely open world race mechanic but everything else about the game is great.

Possibly the coolest thing I've heard this week - I just hope there is ragdolling and that taking jumps isn't such a pain in the backside like in Driv3r.

Android8675's Avatar

I'm sure no bodily harm, there never has been (knock wood) depictions of bodily harm in Burnout. I think that's a good thing. Keep the censors in check.

I think this is awesome, they could easily have saved motorbikes for the next game release.
