Milo demo from last year not planned as a game photo

Remember that really creepy demo of Kinect when it was first unveiled as Project Natal last year? I'm talking about the one with the kid who fished and made everyone watching him feel vaguely uncomfortable. At the time, we were under the impression that this was going to someday be a retail product.

Not so, according to Aaron Greenberg. Australian TV program Good Game asked the Xbox boss about the Milo demo, where he stated that the demo still existed and had been refined but there were no plans to make it a game.

It's funny how I'd managed to put Milo completely out of my mind. I didn't even notice his absence at E3 until this mention of it. It's also interesting to note that there wasn't anything on display that demonstrated the same level of technical wizardry. Makes you wonder what happened to some of the grander ideas, like the item recognition, and whether we'll see them again.

That was a demo? I thought everyone agreed it was a scripted video.

Anyways, not really interested in talking to some little boy on TV... nor in getting Kinect.

Oh god, that header image is horrifying. And on a second glance, he looks like that mean neighbor kid from the first Toy Story.

It does seem like a lot of the interesting concepts, or at least potential ideas that Natal had got left behind when it turned into Kinect. I might be wrong, and something might be coming soon. But I was ready to forgive Microsoft for trying to compete with the Wii in the market it willingly mocked - that was until Kinect decided it actually wanted to be exactly like the Wii, only the games are more expensive and you have to buy a $150 camera*.

*Price only rumored.

I didn't forget, it was one of the first things I mentioned when discussing E3 with my friends.

Clever marketing ploy though.

@Blahblahblahblah Molyneux demonstrated the thing personally at the Nordic Game Jam (in Denmark) earlier this year - got to see it up close. It was wonky and sorta awkward, but it worked. And Peter DID use the words "This is a real game we're working on". People asked questions about how they would localize it (since Milo was supposed to know the name of his "owner", and that meant the woman voicing him would have to record thousands of names in whatever language). Molyneux said it wasn't a problem, and that they had it sorted out. Everyone got the impression that they were working on Milo as a genuine game - So, I'm guessing noone told Lionhead that they wouldn't be making this thing, or maybe Molyneux just got carried away (again)...

The only thing I liked about Milo was his supposed reaction to your emotions, like the way he got sad when the lady scolded him. I hope that tech wasn't too pie in the sky because I can see that adding a layer of depth to a game like Mass Effect 3 used in conjunction with a traditional controller

what else is new?

A lot of the stuff they showed off last year just felt unreal and completely conceptual. It also felt dishonest. What they showed off this year isn't even CLOSE to last year's Natal presentation, and I think that really disappointed people. Maybe it'll appear down the road, but for now it seems like a bit of bait and switch.

@pokota: My thoughts exactly. I'm sure they stripped tech to get the price point down

Yeah, even I thought Natal was pretty impressive LAST YEAR.

This year? Not so much.

It's like they took all the cool/interesting/hardcore/game-centric things they promised us it could do, threw them all out of the window and went "fuck it go grab us some Wii games, we'll copy those"

As the annual Turing Test proves, so far it's impossible to have a natural, free-flowing conversation with a piece of software. There's no way this thing could work.

Plus, I would totally try to molest it or at least slap it around a little. Not because I'm a pedo, but like other gamers out there I like to test boundaries and see what's possible and what's off limits.

My "comments by others" page is literally 99% spam right now, and it sucks bigtime.

Know what Let`s ditch all the interesting, possibly revolutionary things we were working on and focus on sports games!

Screw Kinect. It took one of the most interesting technologies to come around and turned it into a means to provide a three times as expensive Nintendo Wii. Worse, Nintendo Wii actually uses motion sensing for interesting and captivating experiences, when it`s not being assaulted by shovelware.

Microsoft deserves a beating for screwing this up. On Molyneux, it`s The Room all over again. I can`t believe they ditched that impressive idea in order to make the crappy Black and White 2 and follow it up with the unbelievably broken and UNINSPIRED Fable.

well your most likely right ninja to make such a demo would require a huge leap in gameplay, hell there not be a leap in ai like that in ages,i got the intel from gametrailers,if he really has made ai like that it really is skynet scary time,as it means artifical ai is almost if not on us

Yeah see i would say OMG that A.I. would be epic but remember its Peter Molynieux...Thats pretty much all you need to connect the dots that if Milo ever will get a release it be really watered down.

Don't get me wrong I like the guy he seems fun and B&W games were epic but he doesn't live in reality...Thats not a bad thing cause you need people like him to reach for the stars to make progress.

Downside is though pretty much 70% of the stuff he promises cant be realised with the tech currently available.

Unless, of course, they're working on the thing as a tech demo I can play. Like, say, it's installed on the Kinect demo disc or whatever.
