Milkstone's dungeon-crawling FPS Ziggurat now available on Steam Early Access

12:30 PM on 08.15.2014

Milkstone Studio's gorgeous but frenetic-looking Ziggurat is a first-person shooter with roguelike elements that's now available on Steam Early Access.

Inspired by the classics Hexen and Heretic, Ziggurat is a dungeon-crawling FPS that features procedurally-generated scenarios and encounters. However, Milkstone states that Ziggurat is not a "pure" roguelike, but it does contain many of the features that we are familiar with, such as level-ups and permadeath.

According to the developer, what differentiates it from other roguelikes is that your combat skills will be the most important factor in advancing through the game. Leveling up and randomly-generated content are there to increase variety and make each playthrough different; not to make the game a dice roll or an unbearable grind.

From what I've seen, Ziggurat looks exceptional. As a fan of both the games that inspired it and of modern FPS roguelike games such as Terrible Posture's Tower of Guns, I'm looking forward to giving it a shot.

Ziggurat welcomes its upcoming official launch with a great-looking trailer

A couple months ago, Rob wrote about Ziggurat making it on Steam Early Access, and it looks like this one will not be wasting away there for long before its full release, which developer Milkstone Studios says is "very close...more

I hate iPhone games, but I like them in theory. As things stand, the iPhone is the breeding ground for a new generation of game designers, lazier than any that has come before it. One that uses unnecessary leveling mechan...more

Review: Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series: The Sword in the Darkness

Telltale seems to be getting into the swing of things with Game of Thrones, in more ways than one. For starters, it only took seven weeks since the last episode for this one to come out. If Telltale can keep up that pace, the...more

Review: Life is Strange: Out of Time

I just finished episode two of Life is Strange, and I've spiraled down a playlist of Ben Folds songs. Out of Time is Kate Marsh's story, but "Kate" is too cheerful; this tale isn't about daisies, dandelions, and butterfl...more

I used to love dinosaurs. Growing up I watched The Land Before Time nearly daily, and I really wanted to be a paleontologist just like Alan Grant. If there was a video game with dinosaurs in it, I experienced it it,...more
