Midway Games loses its name photo

After over fifty years, ending in a sort of drawn-out drama not unlike watching a goldfish flop around amidst the broken shards of its shattered bowl, there will no longer be a company called Midway Games. As of Monday, July 13th, the company name will be changing, following its acquisition by Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment. The news was confirmed via the twitter accounts of employees Hector Sanchez and Hans Lo

That's all that appears to be changing, at least as of this point. Development continues on Mortal Kombat 9 as normal. No word yet on what the studio is going to be called as of Monday, but speculation suggests that it will probably just fall under the new parent company's moniker.

It's really quite a shame, as the Midway name is such a good one. It's evocative of leisure-time activities and gives the sense of being on a boardwalk or at a carnival but without all of those sleazy gypsys or grungy panhandlers. I'm sorry to see it go.

I pray that there's some improvement of their output, despite the slight name change. They should grasp this opportunity to change and distance themselves from Mortal Kombat. Until they do and develop soome fresh IP, they'll continue to fail.

Mortal Kombat IX?? You've already lost a sale, Midway. Nothing about it interests me at all. Same shit, different day. Continue to oblivion.

Midway names was at some point a name that stood for awesome arcade games and not that name is good. I really can't tell if that's a good or a bad thing.

My suggestion for the new name? That Xybots Company. Nevermind that I'm the only one who liked that game.

It'll be interesting to see what Warner will do with the IP's and talent it gained. I used to like games from Midway, however for a long while now (in my opinion) it's been making nothing but crap games. I'd always hold off and not buy into the hype just because it was published by Midway and wait for the reviews and opinions to come out.

If I was Atari, I'd now be pissed because in my opinion they are now at the bottom (although to be fair, I am enjoying Ghostbusters). That title used to be held by Acclaim prior to them going bankrupt then the hole was filled by Midway.

Not matter how many crappy games they make I would have always thought of Midway fondly for the wonderful memories of days spent playing Hydro Thunder. Oh how things change.

Man... that is terrible. I have many fond memories of seeing that name before starting fresh games of Mortal Kombat and NBA Jam in the arcade. Man... they made so many awesome games.

/me pours out some liquor for his homie Midway.

Mortal Kombat 9? Really?
And Midway wonders why they went bankrupt.

@King, you mention Hydro Thunder, that game is far more deserving of a console push, than more MK ever was.

Isn't it ironic, that Midway still managed to get a recent Hydro Thunder type game into arcades, even when arcades are dead or dying. Just shows how badly run they are, by the very fact, that they didn't focus that energy, into a console game instead.

How many boat based action games, are there on sale? Like none. And how many beat em ups, better than MK? Plenty. Its not rocket science, Midway. MK is still junk and no one wants it, except a small minority and Midway.

On a more positive note, WB could be their saviour. WB have a few TV license that would make cracking games. Babylon 5 would be a great one to use, as there was going to be a B5 game a few years back, but it got cancelled, Terminator TSCC would also be another cool one to use, since the series was just getting interesting. I'd love to explore that universe and its possibilties, away from the film time line, and that awful T4 Salvation game.
