Yesterday, at a Gamers' Day event that took place in Las Vegas’ remote Red Rock Casino, Resort, and Spa, Midway’s Ed Boon finally pulled the cover off of the next chapter in the Mortal Kombat series.

Called Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, the Unreal Engine 3.0-powered title pits characters from Midway’s videogame universe against DC Comics’ iconic super heroes. The details on what brings the two universes together are being kept under wraps, but Midway’s creative team has joined with comic book writing talent Justin Gray (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight) and Jimmy Palmiotti (Painkiller Jane) to make sense of the peculiar mash-up. Presently, Midway are only confirming Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Superman, and Batman as playable characters in the upcoming title.

“Every console generation we like to wipe the slate clean with Mortal Kombat,” Boon said, “With this generation we’re starting new with both the new fighting engine, and as you can see, the story mode. We’re very excited about the new fighting mechanic that marries the intense brutality of Mortal Kombat with the signature moves from DC characters like Batman and Superman.”

More (though not much) info after the jump.

While the game wasn’t playable, a teaser trailer displayed some of the game’s new fighting mechanics: “Freefall Kombat”, where players can battle in the air while transitioning between areas, and “Klose Kombat,” brutal up-close fighting that will highlight the game's real-time damage, including torn clothing and bruising. Boon also promised the ability to throw characters off of and through buildings.

One final thing, and I hope you’re sitting down for this one -- MK vs. DCU will not feature one of the series’ staples -- fatalities. It seems that this signature feature of the Mortal Kombat titles doesn’t sit well with DC Comics’ values. Could we be seeing the first T-rated Mortal Kombat title coming to market? We’ll have to wait until E3, when Midway plans to reveal more details on the title, which is scheduled to ship for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this fall.

Well... pitting Batman against Sub-Zero seems like a fair trade-off for the fatalities.

Also, WHAT ARE THE FUCKING ODDS OF THIS GAME HAPPENING!!! WHAT NEXT??? SUPER MARIO GALAXY ON PLAYSTATION 3??

The sheer ridiculousness of this concept will be enough to fill the void. It just may be the second wildest crossover I've never dreamt.

Honestly, I don't care if the fatalities are taken out, just so long as it plays more fluidly like MK3 (Vanilla or Ultimate flavor), or Hell, even like MKII. Because I'm avoiding it like the plague if it plays like any of that 3-D garbage.

Are they just taking out fatalities, or are they taking blood out all together? I can't imagine uppercutting someone without a ridiculous amount of blood flying out of their face.

2008 will be remembered as the year of the cross over fighting games. First Snake and Sonic in Brawl, then Vader and Yoda in Soul Calibur 4, and now this.

WTF...? Does anyone think this sounds like something EA would do?

While the more modern Mortal Kombat games are actually pretty good, the Fatalities and brutality of the game made it a real standout to other games of the ilk. This is a stupid move. I wouldn't even buy the SNES version of Mortal Kombat 1 cause it didn't have blood....thank you Genesis!

Are people actually complaining about the crossover? Do we not remember how awesome Marvel vs Capcom was? I actually dont understand what there is to complain about here.

I'd rather have a new Marvel vs Capcom game.

This gaming disaster coming from a mile away.

DC comics has traditionally had dismal showings when it comes to gaming, and the freshness date of Mortal Kombat expired in 1993.

Seriously, I can't believe there are people in this thread that are psyched about it..(???)

Just as I can't believe that there are people already writing it off as shit and a waste of time, even though all we have to go on is just an announcement and a single image.

With fatalities being taken away (the harboring of the entire franchise). Can this team make a decent MK game again? I have often wondered what an MK game would be without what made its core audience find it fascinating.

==, why did i have to guess now

I'm glad they're using a new fighting engine for this one. I hope they don't fuck this up... nothing could be more satisfying than freezing Superman and then shattering him into little pieces, or stealing his soul and watching him shrivel up.

This fits seeing as the Mortal Kombat universe is about 1/1000th the size of the DC universe.

FAIL!

I'm not too sure about this.

I think I'd get sick of seeing "Batman Wins" after a while. :)

Now all I need is someone to actually play against face to face. Online is just so impersonal for fighting games. But, loving the idea.

hopefully they realize that the last few shit games didn't do anything and they need to go back to their MKII roots. hopefully.

this MAY...just MAY turn out decent granted they don't screw it up and go overboard. but I feel the latter happening. Obtaining DC comic characters in a game prolly made Boon and Tobias cum their pants.

I'll say it again. Just... wow. Exactly when did gamers, generally speaking, get to be this fucking jaded? I mean, I know it's kinda been that way for a while now to an extent, but when and why exactly did it become so? It's not like you guys are going to be fucking strapped to a chair and forced to play this or anything, if and when it ever comes out. I, for one, hope this ends up rocking everyones' faces off, fatalities or not, and I refuse to write it off as fail until it is actually shown to be fail. I mean, I can see why people would be hesitant to get all gung ho about this and all, hell I'm going to reserve judgment until I see some gameplay and such myself, but I seriously don't get all these declarations of "OMG epic fail!!11!`!12!!" when it's hardly even out of the fucking gate though. Seriously, at the very least the concept of this is not any more or less retarded than Marvel vs Capcom, and those turned out okay, so why is this getting the bum's rush right off the bat?

And for all of those saying that it's only the fatalities that make MK what it is: Bullshit. Anecdotal evidence: My high school had an UMK3 machine in the cafeteria back in the day, and because the administration were pussies they had the blood and fatalities turned off (which was retarded because the year before that they had a MK2 machine in there with everything enabled, but I digress). Yet, despite this, the UMK3 machine was still always packed, while the other contemporary games there were mostly vacant. The only games that came close to the number of players were NBA Jam TE, Raiden II, and D&D Tower of Doom. Yes, it would have been better if they'd enabled the blood and fatalities, obviously, but many many people still played it regardless, despite the fact that there were other, equally (perhaps even more) viable choices to be had. Honestly, I preferred ToD myself, but I still played more than my fair share of gimped out UMK3 as well.

Also, the thought of Meat or Mokap kicking Superman's or Batman's ass is absolutely ludicrously hilarious to me, as much as would be, say, Aquaman vs Sub-Zero or something. If the game allows for these scenarios, I will be content. Unless the game sucks balls, that is, in which case I won't give a shit.

FWIW though, I'm still just waiting for something like this to become an actual official game and not just a fan-made flash thing.
