Midway could face bankruptcy in fifty days photo

It seems that not even Superman can save ailing publisher Midway, as an SEC filing has revealed that unless the Mortal Kombat creator can pony up $150 million within fifty days, it faces bankruptcy.

At last count on October 31, Midway had a $10.3 million cash total. It is currently looking for "strategic and financial alternatives" to its money woes. Unless it can find one of these alternatives to liquidation, it's a potential fatality for the troubled company.

At the beginning of the month, we reported that the majority of the company's shares had been sold for a measly $.00012 per share. This caused the overall share price to drop by 40%, meaning that shares in Midway now cost 23 cents apiece.

No amount of desperately editing MK vs. DC for a Teen rating will save Midway now.

That's too bad about Midway. That said, I like it when Batman administers a good, old-fashioned dose of reality. Pow! Bang!
Holy going into Bankruptcy, Batman!

This is what happens when you make shitty games that nobody buys.

Companies make it through bankruptcies all the time. It depends on whether Midway chooses to liquidate itself, or keep the business as a going concern and work with the bankruptcy court to establish payment plans for its debt.

I hope that when Midway goes out of business, Capcom buys the Mortal Kombat franchise so that we can finally get "Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat." Heck, I'd even take EA as long as it's not Activision or Ubisoft. The latter two can't seem to do anything right these days.

$100,000. I could have had the rights to NBA Jam for less then a house.

You can't *imagine* the cheat codes. It would have been beautiful.

Well color me unsurprised. I guess ill just kick back and wait for this corpse of a company to finally float its bloated body to shore so we can bury it and forget about it. I highly doubt Midway has any bargaining chips or a leg to stand on when it comes to making it through a bankruptcy, considering how much they have shown they are completely incompetent when it comes to making money.

This is just sad. I mean, sure, they haven't been making any GTAs' or Halos' of their own for the last few years, but these guys have been around for a while already. A company this old doesn't deserve what they're getting right now. I hope they get through this, or at the least get purchased by another gaming company not named Activision or Ubisoft (hey, at least EA is getting their act together by releasing GOOD games this year). And as Timstuff said, a Capcom purchase would probably mean the best fighting game in a long time with MK Vs. SF.

Midway is pretty much dead. Mortal Kombat is the only franchise they own that's worth anything. Unless they can sell that for $150 million.

Bummer, didn't they have a secret game that's better looking than Gears 2?

Who knows what will happen next. There's no guarantee they can even liquidate their franchises in hits market if it comes to that. That might mean no more Mortal Kombat or anything else they've ever made.

Midways burned on the oily MK rag for too long, they won't be missed.

What about the Vegas game they're supposedly working on? Will that just get scrapped or pushed off onto someone else?

God, I hope this doesn't affect Lord of the Rings Online.

Midway, really though, you guys published some really bad games.

Sadly Midway should have never wasted time with DC. They figured it would benefit them because they could draw in more people. The money they wasted to get the rights to use DC characters was money they could have used to pull themselves out of this hole. Midway should have gone for Marvel or just made a regular MK game. MK vs SF would have been awesome and Capcom could have used it as a way to promote their game as well. But Capcom isn't really good at making money, I mean really. SF 4 is the same shit, just flashier. Hopefully someone buys Midway or gives them money to use their characters in a game. The teen rating is what killed Mortal Kombat imo. It is a game centered around ruthless, gratifying violence and gore. When that type of game tries to "tone down" it looses some of the reasons why we play it.

Not saying thats what should make a game, but when it comes to Mortal Kombat it is a fairly large part of the pie.

In the credit crunch. If MK vs DS doesn't sell, Midway goes down.
