Quantcast

The footage in that box up there comes from a CBS sitcom called How I Met Your Mother. Other than starring an older, less Hippocratic Neil Patrick Harris, it has recently become notable for revealing that Middle America finally understands gamer culture.

I hear many of you out there cocking your heads to the side, and making that "baroo" sound, the one that really only comes off as adorable when dogs do it (regardless of how often you read Cute Overload), so let me explain.

CBS, as a network, is the broadcasting equivalent of soy milk. When octogenarians whose only joy in life is being morally offended by Fig Newton boxes need the sweet opiate of television, CBS is what they tune into. Occasionally they stray over to The History Channel, but even coverage of a war they participated in often outrages their sensitive morality. With this well deserved reputation for being as palatable as a digestive cracker, anything broadcast by CBS must appeal to the lowest of all common denominators: Middle America. These are the same people who find Dennis Miller confusing, yet strangely infuriating, and who have made Jeff Foxworthy the greatest selling comedian in history. Now, when CBS deems that these people are ready for jokes about online dating, in an MMO no less -- the gamer's equivalent of jamming your penis in a hole in a tree and hoping it isn't bitten by something angry -- you have a very strong indicator that America finally gets it.

Gaming is now mainstream. We've lost all elitist, niche appeal. Whether you like it or not, you're now the social equivalent of a forty-year-old father of two who spends his weekends fishing, and drinking beer. Welcome to milquetoast.

they hit our culture pretty heavy - last week they opened by playing Wii games, in a previous they sported PS3 controllers during casual convo, and they're always talking about blogs and using leetspeek

How I Met Your Mother is up with the times, mostly because its creators aren't industry vets that go for the 40 year old mom demographic.

This show is truly epic lulz.

kintaeb, it is a funny show, but I get a once-an-episode cringe thing going on lately

Wow that's interesting, yet surprisingly un-appealing.

I really love the show. It's one of the only true "sitcoms" left on TV that doesn't suck. They were playing Wii Sports a few weeks ago too.

They frequently play video games on the show, which makes me think that at least Ted and Marshall are more hardcore gamers than we give them credit for. Barney, not so much...

Time to start the hardcore niche elite of professional lvl70 MILF-Hunters. Say, I'm good with children you know. Awww, soccer practice takes 3 hours? And your husband died 2 years ago? And we remind you of 40 year old men with experience and post-midlife stability?

Dear diary... JACKPOT!

I'm surprised this didn't end with Nex's retirement from gaming journalism.

I suppose this should be a defining moment, as you say, Nex, but then again I have to wonder why, if CBS "gets" gamer/geek culture, they haven't yet cancelled "Big Bang Theory" and viciously exterminated anyone involved with the conceptualizing, development, production, or distribution of that godawful waste of HDTV bandwidth.

Bah, exclusive clubs are overrated, you pansies. I look forward to when games are used not as a punchline, but as just something that people do, no stigmas attached.

Dale:

Do you mean it's really cheesy some times? I agree, but I just keep going and enjoy the rest.

Ooh, nice product placement! They didn't even try to disguise that one. Pretty awful show by the way.

Oh yeah, hot chicks play WoW. That's why you don't see them in bars or clubs or supermarkets or malls, etc. They are all playing WoW, grinding to get that special Wind Whispers Sword +2 and Dragon Breath Gemstone +4.

Bah. Gaming has been working its way into the mainstream for quite sometime now. It's not like we woke up today and suddenly everyone is a gamer. The fact that anyone can recognize Super Mario Bros. songs and the recent cultural phenomenons of Halo and Guitar Hero should give you some clue. Also, look at how many people have played or are currently play WoW? Millions. They are bound to get some laughs with that many people who "get it." If nothing else, now that more people get games, we are only getting closer to people finally accepting games as a legitimate form of art.

Still not sure if the whole gaming thing will be seen as socially acceptable by the vast majority of people. Its becoming more commonplace to see games used in television shows, but when I go out with some hardcore gaming friends and all they want to talk about is games it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see why they are still single. Moderation is key.

wellll that is an interesting analysis, lou, but i'm gonna go ahead and disagree with you. the show is aimed at people in their mid-20's to early 30's. the stars are all in our (re: my) age range. your analysis of CBS might have been accurate about five years ago, but since NBC lost Friends and all that other crap, CBS has risen to the top and NBC has sorta sunk to rock bottom (though all networks have suffered the suck this year). HIMYM has been around for three seasons now and hasn't been the most popular show in television but it has been consistent. the show is not how you put it "middle america" because most of america does not watch it. the 3rd season wasn't picked up till the last minute earlier this year back in i believe may. the flute girl from american pie is not middle america. she's a fanboy wet dream. doogie howser is awesome because most of my peers grew up watching him. so no, gamer culture hasn't reached middle america. that's why the joke is funny. it caters to a very limited spectrum of the populous who are aware of pop culture. most of the viewers laughed at the joke realizing ted is not the big guy but the pop culture reference went over their heads. thanks for playing.

Small sample size, but the only WoW players I have met in real life were in Indiana.
Actually, also St. Louis.
