Microsoft: XBL's friends cap will be raised, we promise photo

I'm afraid to even do a Google search to see how many times this site has mentioned the 100-friend cap for Xbox LIVE, and how many of those times involved someone of authority saying the restriction would be addressed.

Now I can't say how big of an issue this is for the majority of Xbox LIVE users, but for me, most of my fellow bloggers, and I imagine a good portion of you all have either hit the friends cap or gotten dangerously close.

Anyway, Microsoft's Steve Willet told Patrick Klepek over at G4 that no one has forgotten about past promises. "It is absolutely a continued focus and I am not [a] technical architect that you could tell you why it's capped there," he says, "but I will say it continues to come up, it is something that will not be forever, but I can't give you a real time horizon on when it's going to change."

Well that was informative and eerily specific. Case closed, guys! You can go home now.

Well, i don't need the extra space, but for people that do, I can imagine this being great news. Maybe it's just me, but I don't remember hearing about this before.

Meh. I only have about twenty friends, and that's all I need.

I forget what the maximum number a friends a person can have before the steady friendship starts to degrade, what is a hundred?

Does this mean I can add e-celebrities soon without them denying??? WEEEEEE.

@Bennyishere

No no, they'll still deny you. The difference is now you'll have to face the bitter truth that they are denying you because they don't like you, not because their friends list is full.

:)

I wonder how many people have 100 'friends' (in the social networking era that word has entirely lost its original meaning) that regularly log in.

There is no way I would ever even come close to that cap unless I became famous and suddenly was flooded with friend requests. I have everyone I know who plays XBL on my friend list and I thinking have like 13 people total.

I have 100 friends on my list and there are only two on there that I don't recognize, the other 98 are dtoiders.

...People are actually near 100? I have 9... and I personally know all 9. And I'm happy with that.

@Chronic: it was 150 I believe.

Wasn't this limit tied to the Xbox1's limitation of 100 friends on Xbox Live or something? If so, I guess they'll increase the cap once they announce that the Xbox1 will no longer be fully supported by Xbox Live or something.

My friends list is always at 100 :(
It's not even that I play with all people, but some groups play Gears, some play COD, some play fighters, others are just friends I hardly ever play with, etc. It would be nice not to have to delete people you want to poke your Geometry Wars 2 score at. Speaking of which, I hate you Zeke and Conrad!!!

I always delete friends that have been inactive for more than 1 month. So no problem for me.

I don't have any friends, so the 100 friend cap isn't an issue for me.

I'm getting up there with 88 people. Its not that I'm some "social butterfly", its just a combination of RL friends, different game groups like Pew said, and TF2 clan bloat. You have all your teammates on the friend list obviously, but also a good chunk of the competition, it adds up fast.

I actually really like the Xbox live system way more than I would have ever thought I would have. Not only has it facilitated easy to organize multiplayer, I've made some real friendships and bonds with the system. I'll be interested to see them expand the social networking options with it.
