Microsoft wants Nintendo's back yard

Microsoft wants Nintendo's back yard photo

Twenty seven acres of Nintendo property are up for sale, and guess who's one of the notable bidders? A Seattle newspaper is reporting that Microsoft has their checkbook burning for the empty lot directly behind the existing Nintendo campus, otherwise secretly known as the cancer jammed between MSN and other nearby Microsoft headquarter buildings.  The news story is fully of passive aggressive business speak like some suit from Microsoft saying "always aware of possibilities". Who talks like that, and why haven't I been picking up starchy office women with that line?  What I think he means is "hell yeah we'd love Nintendo to GTFO".

Despite earlier rumors that Nintendo is moving to either NYC or Silicon Valley, Perry Kaplan maintains that they are keeping their 900+ employees in Redmond while a few hundred are moving to remote locations. Say what you want, but I can't believe a growing company will stay put there *and* sell the space they had previously held to someday grow into.  It makes no sense. If the deal goes through, let's see how long they stay in town when Microsoft moves in.  I dare them to build and point a giant outdoor five story Xbox Live Camera directly at Reggie's corner office.

NextGen noted that Microsoft needs the space: "During the last fiscal year, the company added 10,000 employees worldwide, the biggest hike in its history."  That makes sense, since Vista is the most bloated operating system ever made. I'll cut myself off there before I turn this place into Slashdot.

What do you think it would be like to be a Nintendo worker in that area? Say you went out to lunch, would you be picked on the majority ("cool kids") while you were out cause you were the minority ("nerds/geeks/dorks")?

"Stop picking on me guys! We sell systems too! Almost the same number as you have in half the time!"

IIRC, Microsoft has wanted that chunk of property for quite some time. The fact that Nintendo is finally willing to sell it says something, although I don't know what, 'cause I'm not a businessy-type of guy.

Well, it might make sense that NOA sell the property first while it prepares for a move. That way if MS begins to build a new facility, by the time NOA does want to move out, the land value for their current building will surely go up. If MS wants to buy that, too, NOA will have cashed in twice, rather than sell everything at once at some more enticing, negotiated price for MS -- and god forbid, have MS as landlords until they peace out.

They'll probably put up bullet bills facing the property

I do enjoy the fact that every bit of news like this some how affects the MSFT stock. So if they do buy the property watch it jump up half a dollar.
