Microsoft wants more exclusives and wider audience photo

When Sony lost exclusivity with Final Fantasy XIII, its biggest (and perhaps only) criticism of Microsoft was that its own exclusives were lacking and that the Xbox 360 relied on third party multiplatform games. This is something that Microsoft appears to have thought about, as it has made its desire for more exclusive titles known.

"We’d love to have more exclusive hits on our box, absolutely," stated Microsoft interactive entertainment boss Don Mattrick when asked about the 360's weaknesses. "Are we investing in that? Yes we are. Does that take a lot of time? Yes it does."

Mattrick also talked about Microsoft's attempt at broadening the Xbox 360's appeal beyond "hardcore" gamers: "It takes time to do that – we’re working on those beats but you can only do so much in a year."

So, Mattrick's stance is that everything takes a lot of time. Fair enough.

So far, Microsoft has thrown a lot of money at acquiring third party games with an eye to introducing exclusive DLC, but it's not a tactic that has proven to significantly hurt Sony's sales. If Microsoft wants to compete on the exclusivity front, it will have to make like Sony and start focusing on first party development.

well they've been taking some good steps with Rare games like Viva Pinata and the new Banjo-Kazooie.

Microsoft does need to step it up soon though. Sony can survive the drought of games for PS3 because they have such an extensive library of PS2 games to keep the company afloat. If Microsoft doesn't start getting more IP stuff they don't have the same back catalog of good games to support the console.

Well, they've finally realized what Nintendo realized back in 2004, that you can't be successful with hardcore content alone. PS2 sold what it sold because of Buzz and Singstar too. Now 360 will get lips, avatars and other "casual" themed titles and features. Good luck catching up!

"wider audience" being the key part. Xbox will just become a shitty, casual only, home DVD player with monthly charges. Oh, and cross-game invites for 360-music.

I don't believe this for a second.

Why wouldn't they just publish the same games every year, just with more bloom lighting and updated rosters?

"it's not a tactic that has proven to significantly hurt Sony's sales."

A business strategy like that is never a good thing.

I think third party developers will eventually get to the point where releasing their games for every current platform will be the status quo. Why tell people that to play THEIR game, they need to plunk down another 300-400 dollars? The only company that is helped by exclusives are the console makers themselves. If console makers want exclusives, they should develop 'em themselves.

MS relies on third party software? As opposed to Sony, who develops all their hit games internally?

Also, fuck exclusives. Exclusives are not good for gamers, they are good for hardware manufacturers.

the only exclusive left should be the first party titles. It's not financially viable to make exclusives anyway.

Translation: ...but not on this generation's console.

First-party titles have consistently shown to be the absolute best exclusive titles.

Bah who needs exclusives when people will buy the same game every year with a different label on the front and a new feature or maybe even 2

@RJG

Right on!!! I want gamers of all budgets and consoels to be able to enjoy gams on the consoles they own.

If I had my way - all multiplat games would be on the Wii/PS2/DS/PSP/X360/PS3/PC and be done competently.

I just want people to enjoy games.

Are they going to start by creating first party development teams or are they just going to buy them?

there will always be competition in this industry, and if there were no such things as exclusive titles, gaming would be a weird business. first-party exclusives are the titles that define a console for what it is. Also, the drive to make games that sell consoles gives developers the impetus to make some really great games
