Microsoft wants floppy bodies 'perpetually' photo

According to Develop, Microsoft Game Studios and Havok have recently signed a “perpetual licensing agreement” to ensure that Microsoft and its partners have access to flying trash cans, floppy bodies, and clipping issues for eternity. It is being described as a “unique deal,” but real specifics including exclusivity have not been discussed openly as of yet. The best part of the deal is that Microsoft will be able to utilize Havok’s upcoming “Havok Cloth” product, which is sure to strike fear into both Sony and Nintendo’s hearts.

If anything, this ensures that the random acts of physics-based hilarity in Microsoft Game Studio’s games will perpetually continue. The Havok engine and I have a close relationship. Ever since the first time I placed a grenade on a dead body in Halo 2, I have had held the firm belief that nothing in videogame history could come close to the beauty of watching a corpse bounce between buildings and through a teleporter.

Just as an interesting tidbit, among the official upcoming games list on Havok’s website is Alan Wake. After a bit of prying, I found out that Remedy is using a secret engine called “Havok Disappearing.” Apparently, the engine allows developers to cloak their titles from public view and break console launch release dates.

That hardly seems fair. I see several non-360 games that according to the box use the Havok engine.

@The-Excel - I believe I need to add in the word "recently," but as I'm not exactly certain on the implications of this agreement in terms of exclusivity. I believe this is just an announcement of an extended relationship between the two companies.

LoL @ the Alan Wake bit.

I'm holding out hope that it will be good. I love those old school adventure games.

So, companies can now come and saw "DO WANT" forever to physics engines?

What kind of crazy world do we live in?

Well does it mean that MGS will only use the Havok Physics Engine, or does it mean that MGS is the only dev that can use Havok? There's a difference, and I'm exactly sure what this agreement means in terms of that.

Perpetual floppiness can't be healthy for your relationship.

Seems like its MS promising to use Havok forever more, which i have no problem with. Havok is pretty good.

@gamerzworld - no reason why they cant do both. Euphoria deals only with animating characters, not with physics in general.

Yay, now more companies can be lazy assholes and not animate death animations.

I think the havok engine is nice and all, but not the ed all be all. hopefully this won't impede development of other physics engines.

Dismemberment is the best part though... If that is not allowed then this engine isn't worth it.
