Want to feature some new release? Fine. Dropping some DLC? Ok, that's cool. An XBLA Sale? Awesome. Heck, Doritos has a promo that get's me game content? Hit me.
Beef Jerky? ...seriously?
Why the **** are people paying for Live? xGameChat? Blind faith that somehow the platform has great security when it probably doesn't?
I, for one, don't mind videogame ads. I mean, I do like videogames and like to know when demos, extra content, sales, etc are available.
And to think we would want to share these adds with our friends? Now that's just plain stupid.
Not getting hacked is worth a subscription fee for, for one.
Don't be ignorant. Xbox Live offers tons of worthwhile features, and I feel like I get my money's worth. Also, if you use the internet more than once a month, you can easily find Xbox Live 1 year deals for over half off retail price.
That said, I also enjoy Playstation Plus - which also has lots of cool perks.
This shows me how terribly out of touch M$ is about gamers and gaming culture in general. Remember Poochie on Simpsons?
Doritos, Jacklinks, T-mobile, Zune, Windows Phone, The Army, etc. are all on there, and we basically pay to see the ads.
Granted, everyone bitching will still go out and get a new xbl 12 month card when their shit expires, so, simply bitching alone wont stop this from happening...
And @JOMSTORLONG: a "significant uproar" means shit if they already have your money... which sucks. But I'm glad you are calling bullshit on this one.
But thank god we get awesome services like ESPN The Ocho, Twitter and Facebook on this valuable service... pretty soon we will also have the added benefit of searching for... items on our own systems... with.. bing? yeah, Microsoft is fucking us. royally.
It doesn't seem like you'll be forced to watch them here either, as the dude had to go out of his way to over over the content square to play the damn ad.
I mean, I don't like ads either, but yeah.
I will admit that if Xbox Live just had the State Farm spots with J.K. Simmons, and the recent Geico ads, I wouldn't be angry at all. Funny ads are funny man.
As if people WANT advertisements? And who cares about sharing advertisements with other people? Most importantly: will I get paid for doing that?
Like you said, don't be ignorant. "Not getting hacked is worth a subscription fee for, for one."? Lots of people have had their Xbox Live Accounts hacked. In fact, your general or whatever his name is, got his Xbox Live account hacked twice!! I know I've already said this, but there are ignorant people like you who still thinks Xbox Live is hack free because it's a paid service.
On a calmer note, Jim Sterling, please tell me all the details you have on the Steel Battalion game for Kinect. You know, coz journalism. :) I want that game quite badly. Thank you.
Or, you know, stop letting corporations abuse you, throw your xbox in the garbage and assert yourself as a consumer.
Nelson's account was hacked because they spent a significant amount of time targeting him, and he was able to regain his account in less than a day. That's a lot better than over a month, and service-wide. In the 9 years that Xbox Live has been running, since the original Xbox, 1 account has been confirmed to be hacked - and even then, it wasn't confirmed they got ANY personal data from him - they just changed his status on Xbox Live.
This is actually kinda cool, the next move will be to embed this kind of thing in movies and TV.
Again, IF you're interested.
The text led me to believe we were getting spams or something.
But... he called teens "creatures"?
If they had a way to customize a favorites bar, that would be fantastic.
I press up one time on an analogue stick. Just the once. A single solitary tap on that stick.
Fucking Microsoft putting me through all that shit and hardship.
Bastards.
FUCK
new tagline for Kinect:
"YOU are the ad!"
out of touch
Are you forced to watch these advertisements?
If the answer is no, then what's the big deal? That "Microsoft" isn't focusing entirely on game-focused content, as if the entirety of Microsoft is made up of nothing but game developers?
Really? Do you really think that only one 360 account has been hacked? Of course the entire Live has never been brought all the way down like PSN. But tons of accounts have been hacked.
What the FUCKING HELL ASS BALLS. Who the fucking SHIT would actually TWEET a fucking ADVERTISEMENT...God damn I hate Microsoft. If they didn't have Halo, I'd be OUT THE DAMN DOOR.
I don't even have to go through that much hassle. My Xbox (and I assume most people's) loads up on the "My Xbox" panel. If I want to play a game I just hit A. I'm already in the game and I have not seen a single advertisement yet.
People truly do blow this out of proportion.
"Like you said, don't be ignorant. "Not getting hacked is worth a subscription fee for, for one."? Lots of people have had their Xbox Live Accounts hacked."
No. Lot's of people get their Live accounts Phished, just like their gmail, MSN, YouTube and Credit Card PINs.
People throw the word "hack" like they know what it means.
I've never been one of the people who's been pissed to pay for the service, probably because I've played MMO's and I've got this twisted sense that this stuff needs to be paid for somehow (Yes, yes, I know, that's not really how it should work and Sony has a much better way about it all, I've never EVER said they didn't.) but lately (since my blog post about dealing with them and my disconnection issues -which hasn't at all been solved) I'm becoming one of those people who's wondering what the hell we're even paying for in that subscription price, SPECIALLY when we're being inundated with ads all over the place on the service.
I said it during/after the conferences at E3 this year, I really do think I'll be returning to Sony whenever their newest console will be out. I was ok with Microsoft for a while, but things are slipping in a terrible direction that I just don't like. Nothing Sony's said or done in the last 5 years has been nearly as horrible as this stealth bullshit Microsoft is pulling. (And yes, I know, "Get a PS3 now, why wait?" but we bought 2 3DS' this year, can't afford another big purchase like that.. Its a better personal choice to wait it out)
£300 on a console to play games, £40 a year for the subscription, and Microsoft want to ram even more advertisements down our throats. The worst part is that they think we want this!
This likely will not stop here. Windows 8 will feature the Metro UI. How long until advertisements are built into Windows? Time will tell.
For now, Microsoft have given me a reason to get rid of my Xbox.
