Microsoft to cover E74 errors with RRoD warranty photo

If you’ve spent the dough to get your Xbox 360 replaced because of an E74 error (dubbed the new “Red Ring of Death” by many), look forward to getting your money back. Microsoft has recently decided that the error that borks the game machine is close enough to the three red lights to warrant the blanket protection Microsoft set up for it back in July 2007. In other words, E74 repairs are free until 2010 and if you’ve paid for anything related to it, Microsoft will reimburse you.

From Microsoft, via Kotaku:

While the majority of Xbox 360 owners continue to have a great experience with their console, we are aware that a very small percentage of our customers have reported receiving an error that displays "E74" on their screen. After investigating the issue, we have determined that the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with three flashing red lights error on the console. As a result, we have decided to cover repairs related to the E74 error message under our three-year warranty program for certain general hardware failures that was announced in July 2007.

The Xbox 360 is truly a modern marvel. How Microsoft was able to shape the glass innards and exterior of the console into something that could play games is beyond my understanding of contemporary engineering.

I'm no Microsoft fanboy. I love my 360, but I wonder each time I power it on if it'll be the day it RROD's. I shouldn't have to do that.

But at least they are kinda-sorta admitting their mistake and doing this.

I thought RRoD repairs were already free.

@brosef: yes E74 doesn't give you red rings.

This is good news, my sister's machine showed this error twice.

FUCK! Mine died from E74 - when they told me I'd have to pay to fix it, I opened it up for abit of DIY repair... killed it completely. Piece of shit. My NES still works ffs.

Could they be hinting that E74 was a new way of reporting RROD without the RROD? No doubt a new message will appear with the next update, and then months later they'll cover that under warranty.

Meanwhile they're still making money on people who've already had E74, paid to get it fixed and wont hear of this announcement.

It's amazing the amount of money a company can make out of its ignorant customers.

Good to know. I've never gotten the RRoD, this is the error I've gotten before. Luckily it was under the 1 year warranty at the time.

i got the e74 error last month and they took my system in and repaired it (still under warranty) and they gave me 1 month of XBL gold for free AND extended my warranty 3 more months (my warranty was to expire in 15 days when my e74 happened) so getting a warranty extended even more works for me. but when my warranty is up and my xbox dies again i will not replace it

Just kicked off the massive pile of dust on my old launch xbox and ordered the repair straight away! Eat my dust MS! I'm glad I'm not the one who has to open that console, I'll bet its full of crap/shit! and thats just the stuff I downloaded from XBL!!! HA!

Fair play to MS for this, but its too late for me. Yes I'll take the free repair, but I'll never play it like I used to. PS3 FTW!

Just got the E74 on Saturday (possibly due to marathon L4D FNFing). I called M$ up on Monday. They wanted to charge me $100 dollars. They implement this the next day. I guess the console is still faulty, and while I wont be paying for another one, at least I can get my current one for free. Regardless, I'm still kinda pissed about this, as OutRun finally drops the week my 360 dies. At least I can play Wipeout HD until my eyes bleed though!

I went through 2 original Xboxes, 2 PS2's and 2 Xbox360's

At least my 360 got repaired for free.

Mine got the E74 6 months after I bought it in Zavvi of all places.
Thankfully, they were kind enough to give me a new one 4 days before the place closed down!

Microsoft probably depends on users' willingness to not give up on the system, once they bought a couple of games, not to lose their investment, and not to lose their gamertag's, achievements, their online identity. Smart guys, them Microsoft!

When you buy 10 games on PS3, and 10 games on Xbox360, the cost difference is less of an issue, isn't it. So I don't understand the complains for PS3 price, any serious game will want to buy more than a few games, which reduces the ratio of price difference to the whole expenditure. Go ahead, buy one :P (Unless you have cracked your Xbox360 to play 'free' games, that is..)

Sounds like someone is threatening legal action. MS only do this shit to avoid legal action.

Nice try MS. Renaming RRoD ain't gonna get you out of all those repairs that easy.

To be fair, rather than my usual MS bashing here I've got to say, my PS3's BR drive died the other day. No disc, no disc, no disc. A quick call to Sony though and i've got a same model (BC launch) refurb within 3 days.

Phew!

Oh man, I have a friend who is really pissed now. His Xbox 360 got the E74 a few weeks ago, after being a month out of warranty. Since Microsoft wanted to charge him $99 to fix it, he brought it into my lab and reflowed the GPU and ANA scaler chip. He's had to do that twice now to keep his 360 working, and since he's opened it up, this extended warranty doesn't apply to him now. If only they had extended the warranty last month, it wouldn't be a problem. It makes me glad mine hasn't given me any problems though. Time to keep my fingers crossed, I guess.

"a very small percentage" does not warrant a new warranty unless its far more than that.

This is good news at least.

I'm the type of guy that scours the net for good deals on systems so I don't have to pay full price (I don't have a lot of money). I bought my PS3 used and have had no issues at all. I've seen dozens of ridiculously cheap deals on refurb 360's that I undoubtedly would have bit on if the 360 wasn't the most unreliable piece of VG hardware ever.

By the time they get it worked out, I imagine the NextBox will have been announced and I'll have never bought a 360 at all.

Well, now that my 360 finally red-ringed and got back from repair, I guess I'll look forward to having this in a while.

I guess the 360 still applies to the Plug-and-Pray moniker. Plug it in, and pray it works!

I was so pissed when I got the E74 error and I was 3 days out of warranty. I had my Xbox up in the closet for like a year and now this happens! Woo

I think this is a great sign Microsoft cares. Look, we ALL know the product was rushed to market, and that's all done with..let's move on.

New bigwigs in the company are trying to make amends with the community, and I think this quick response to the E74 issue is to be commended.

I'm not gonna say I'd rush out and buy a launch unit whenever the (placeholder Xbox 360 2) comes out, but I'd assume that smarter heads will prevail and the next console will be built very well.
