Microsoft to buy Capcom?

Microsoft to buy Capcom? photo
     Sucks 2BU

So is EGM just being stupid enough to fall for a fake Wii like the 1UP dudes, or is this rumor legit? This is the rumor tumor they put in all of our heads:

Microsoft might gobble up another developer -- after the success of Dead Rising, its looking to open its checkbook to consume Capcom.

We want to know what you guys think -- would you like to see this happen or not? A year ago I wouldn't even believe this rumor as a possibility, but there's always the fact that Microsoft stole Rare away from Nintendo. Capcom already pumped out Dead Rising, and plans to kick ass with Lost Planet soon -- not to mention their solid background of Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Mega Man, and Street Fighter games -- so the stakes could be high if this rumor were to come true.

I doubt Microsoft could pull off exclusivity to Capcom's games even if they owned them, but I didn't think a Britney Spears sex tape was ever going to happen either. Devil May Cry on the 360 would definitely be nice though, I'm all for it.

PLEASE! For the love of good gaming, DON'T let this be true!!!

I do not want to buy a Resident Evil from EA, they would kill it! It would be worse then the travesty known as Resident Evil: Apocalypse! And they would probably make you buy ammo or guns or herbs thru microtransactions. grrrr.

But one thing that kind of keeps staying strong that they won't...Mega Man. The only systems that really and extensively appeared is with Sony and Nintendo (ESPECIALLY on DS with the Battle Network games). So I guess even if they do buy them, they couldn't/wouldn't do exclusives....

Side note...wasn't there a possibility of Lost Planet being on PS3 too?

Microsoft didn't "steal" Rare. Rare hasn't made a good game since the N64 days. Each MS title has been fairly lacklustre at best. (I haven't tried Viva Pinata yet, so there's potentially hope.) So far, Rare has proven to be a terrible investment for MS. If they could only make a Killer Instinct 3, I'd be all over that.

the more multiplatform games the less they are tailored to a system. the less of that the more generic and easy-to-port games will be and all of the bells and whistles that make a game go from good to awesome get cut out. competition is a good thing in this market. im sick and tired of the same BS games that get pumped out for all the consoles and end up looking and playing like garbage because they were made with $$ in mind instead of a great game that can take advantage of unique hardware. (to be fair though, capcom has generally been good about this in the past... but not most other companies and this was a good opportunity to rant)

fuckin a. i like capcom, and id like to see them be able to develop for other systems, but if this could mean more quality and less junk, im for it.

If Microsoft could ever win the console war, it's because they bought out all the developers. I'm not sure how I'd feel about it. Right now, all I have is my Xbox 360, but I plan to buy both PlayStation 3 and Wii. If nothing else, Microsoft owning everything would spare me from having to buy Sony's console. If I had to imagine, I think Nintendo would fare better than Sony, as they have their venerable and beloved mascots to work with.

I liked "Perfect Dark Zero" and "Kameo: Elements of Power", and I'm really digging "Viva Pinata", so for me, Rare hasn't released a bad game yet for the 360.

This is great if you're an MS fanboy, but it's gotta be BS and even if it did they'd never get total exclusivity of the titles. I think it would hurt the industry in the long term as competiveness is the only thing that makes us pay $$$$ every five years for Teraflop processing speeds and car/FPS porn.

If Microsoft buy Capcom, then you just know they are going to make them produce sequel after sequel for Dead Rising, and then get Ensemble to make some kind of Zombie RTS....

... wait a minute, that sounds pretty awesome.

I don't see what the debate could be, here. Exclusives suck, this sucks.

I can live with Rare being MS-exclusive because they haven't made a decent game since 2000.

I doubt that it'll happen. Still, that'd be quite an incentive for me to get an Xbox 360. *loves Capcom*

If that happened, I'd be in heaven. Resi Evil, Dead Rising, Lost Planet, DMC, all on my 360. It probably won't though, but here's to hoping Capcom get sucked into it >:D

Capcom does just fine on their own. I don't believe for a second that they'd sell out to Microsoft when they've got better things going on on other platforms.

I absolutely love Capcom. I can't decide whether this would be a good thing or not...They have really brought out some GEMS recently and over the years so the only question is whether something like that would affect the quality of their games. Answer to that is I just don't know.

Haven't Capcom exec's have only just stated that they want to be releasing more cross platform games, due to the increasing cost of development.

I doubt this rumour very much.

It's rad.

Capcom exclusively on the 360 != popular with Japan

Why Rare was even put in this arguement is beyond me, Rare was a Nintendo exclusive company and Nintendo was selling them off and Microsoft pounced. In Rare's defense... Conker: Live and Reloaded freaking owned online and you know it!

Then again, Capcom would be a huge aquisition and would hurt a lot of gamers. thats franchises like Megaman, Resident Evil, and to reference the image provided... Marvel characters? wtf!?!

I joined this site for the specific purpose of commenting on this article. Not to worry (or for MS-fanboys, be sad) but Microsoft is most likely not going to be allowed to acquire Capcom. In America, and similarly in other countries fueled by corporations, Monopolization is illegal. Look up Sherman Act Section 2 or Clayton Act Section 7 if you have time.

Basically what SA Section 2 says, is that a monopoly in a relevant market is not allowed, in essence, to "buy out", merge, or purchase a competitor and the competitor's assets. Similarly, under CA Section 7, competitors are not allowed to merge to concentrate market power in a single firm. Such acts are, as the Supreme Court says, so anti-competative, that Microsoft would have to show evidence that their actions have no effect on competition. Arguably, Capcom is a competitor of Microsoft because both Microsoft and Capcom are VG developers.

Now many of you will argue that Microsoft has been buying up corporations and other competitors and getting away with it. While it is true MS is guilty of buying their competition, they did not actually "get away" with it. In fact, the Department of Justice sued Microsoft and accused them of many Antitrust violations. Microsoft lost these actions, but the DOJ decided against breaking them apart, although, it was very very close. Here is a link for you http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Microsoft

Now in the case of Rare, Rare was the last "competitor" acquision since US v. Microsoft. In summation, Microsoft may want to purchase Capcom, but it aint happening. Not yet at least.

Cheers everyone!

I'm completely against it. Capcom should be able to release their games for systems other than Xbox. It would be pretty unfair to people who decide to purchase the PS3 or Wii instead of the 360. Not everyone can afford all the systems.

Everyone keeps saying "they can't get total exclusivity even if they owned Capcom" You guys are a bunch of fucking morons, if they OWNED Capcom, they'd OWN all their IP and could do whatever they wanted with it.

Just because you're having a hard time imagining Capcom games ONLY on xbox doesn't mean it can't happen. What's the point of Microsoft buying a studio only to let that studio, who now consists of Microsoft employees, release games on the competition's systems? Duurrrrrrr.
