Microsoft teases with 'important' Xbox 360 news for CES photo

While the Consumer Electronics Show is the biggest trade show in the world, it has always been a  big geek fest. It really is still a geek fest, but since the fall of E3, the show has become more attractive to game companies. While CES is far from being a game trade show, some companies have begun to show their wares there, and last year Microsoft had a pretty solid presence as a game company. They're back at CES this year, and it seems that they have some "important" Xbox 360 news in store for us.

The Seattle Times says that Bill Gates is set to make an "important announcement" regarding the Xbox 360 at the 2008 CES, which will take place January 7-10. Unfortunately, that's all that Billy G. and the gang give us.

The Times thinks that they may be announcing a new Xbox 360 SKU with HD-DVD playback. They also mention possible licensing of the Xbox 360 platform to other electronics companies.

"Microsoft may be preparing to license the Xbox gaming platform to consumer-electronics companies," says Seattle Times columnist Brier Dudley. "In particular, Microsoft could work with Toshiba to develop a digital video recorder with a hard-drive, high-definition HD-DVD drive and Xbox gaming capabilities."

"Microsoft could also make a splash by announcing plans to give the Xbox 360 an internal HD-DVD drive, putting it on par with Sony's PlayStation 3 that has a built-in Blu-ray drive."

These are fair guesses, but they bring me back to last where where we guessed similar things. What do you think Microsoft has in store for us?

Destructoid will be on the show floor, elbowing our way through 150,000+ attendees all next week to bring you news from Microsoft and others.

i think it's an announcement about some sort of external motion sensing capabilities. I had a feeling that microsoft was planning this after the success of the wiimote.

They shouldn't put HDDVD in it for games, otherwise millions of people will have to re-purchase the console. They wouldn't do that, would they?

Yeah, and what about that motion sensing rumor? That's what it be.

I hope that it IS the built-in HD-DVD. If it is, then the cost of the normal 360s will likely go down. And early adopters can still buy the external drive, if they're desperate for HD-DVD.

Apparently Kotaku had word from Stuff on the specs of a up and coming SKU called the "Xbox 360 Ultimate"..

http://kotaku.com/339793/stuff-specs-out-the-xbox-360-ultimate

For those that want the cropped down non clicky word on it:

""1080p HDMI output, built-in Wi-Fi, hi-def audio output, cooler 65nm hardware architecture and a near-silent fan." On top of all that, the IPTV service that MS touted at last year's CES will be good to go.

Also included in the Ultimate, according to Stuff? A 320GB hard drive and HD-DVD drive."

Personally, I don't know if it will be the PS3-Killer that the stuff editor wrote it to be... Sounds to me more like it's a desperate cry out to attempt to grab heavy media center people that went toward the PS3 for a Media Center primary, Gaming Center secondary option..

You ask me, with this larger HDD, I don't think it makes much of a difference.. High quality audio and a high definition disc player? Sounds like the PS3 already has it.. Built in wi-fi? Quiet processing? Sounds like the PS3 already has it.. The stuff article calls the HD-DVD player the "Piece De Resistance".. But if one asks me, I think it's too late to make a heavy impact.. The thing is sounding like it's going to cost above $800.

Note: I am by no means a PS3 fanboy. Nor an Xbox 360 fanboy. I am merely saying that if this turns out to be true, it sounds an awful lot like MS is attempting to make a Microsoft X-Station 3. MX3 for short.

What if it's part of a new price drop thing and this "ultimate" is going to be the new Elite?

I predict HD-DVD will win in the US. However, I'm not saying BLu-Ray will fail (in the same way UMD still hasn't fully failed).

When it comes to format wars...

price > all

and HD-DVD is cheaper.

Both will be around for a long time. Even if HD-DVD did fail, you still get to legally rip a licensed copy of the movie to your Vista computer, giving you a leg up when digital distribution destroys all physical media.

Damn, I really hope this isn't true. I just bought my 360 less than two months ago. This is just a kick in my ass if they release this now.

Necros, there will always be a new product to your old. Don't let that keep you from enjoying what you have.
