Microsoft 'sitting on' Jeff Minter's latest game photo

Jeff "I'll stop making games because Frogger is better than Space Giraffe" Minter is getting impatient. According to the bearded animal fancier, Microsoft has been sitting on his latest work, Gridrunner +++, for months, and he's not happy.

"We sent it off to [Microsoft] months ago, but they've just not said anything - we're just waiting for them," explained Minter when asked for a release date. "Basically I'm going to carry on with the PC version of it if I don't hear from them soon, because they're just sitting on the demo we sent them three or four months ago. We haven't heard a thing."

It might have something to do with the fact that Space Giraffe was a flop, something which Minter naturally blames on Xbox Live: "The thing with Xbox Live is that you have to basically get a lot done in the first couple of weeks, then the game goes into a bit of obscurity after that.

"We actually had some very favorable reviews of Space Giraffe, and if you look around, most of them aren't bad. It's just most of them came out too late, and by the time the better reviews came out, the game was already off the front page [of Xbox Live]. So it was just a bit spoiled for us, really."

I'm sure it had nothing to do with the fact that the game was confusing and likely drove off many clueless buyers with its incessent lights and endless braying. Nothing like that at all.

By sitting on, they mean smothering the last living breath out of it so it will never see the light of day.

To be fair, I read this whole interview expecting a good laugh but he mostly comes across as pretty sensible. And hate the game as much as you like, there were people out there who really like the game - he also mentions how he has taken some of the criticisms on board. Not a bad interview, all round.

Personally I still hated the demo, though, so never bought the thing.

I'm not sure I'd come to the same conclusion that lack of advertising hurt Space Giraffe. I think the gameplay was a little overwhelming.

Of all the games that were released last year, Space Giraffe was probably the one I looked forward to the most, but was the one I was also most disappointed in. I had trouble with the controls... I had trouble following what I was doing as the levels progressed. Overall, it wasn't a game that I wanted to play beyond a few tries.

That doesn't mean it's a bad game. But it turned out much different than I would have imagined.

Also, I really don't understand the comparison or grudge that Frogger sold better. Frogger is a KNOWN entity, that has SIMPLE gameplay, and appeals to anyone who played the game in arcades. Space Giraffe on the otherhand is like Tempest on LSD, but without the simple controls and gameplay.

I really have a lot of respect for Jeff Minter, and would like to see more titles from him, but I'm also hoping that he makes something a little more accessible.

I love Space Giraffe, but he really should have expected that it wouldn't do well as it has a lot of qualities, but widespread appeal isn't one of them.

Anyways, can't wait to check out this one.

I think minters talents would be better suited to weird interfaces like the iphone/touch. An average game on the app store seems to do really well for developers. I wanted to like space giraffe but it would not let me.

Maybe jeff should send them some laxatives. It's what I've always relied on when my shit doesn't come out in a timely fashion.

Actual news about Gridrunner +++! Yay!

Good to hear it's coming to PC... and since Space Giraffe is being ported, too, my 360 going RROD earlier this year doesn't seem so bad after all. :)

(I'll still miss playing EDF; but oh well..)

He can't possibly blame reviews for Space Giraffe's poor performance. Every XBLA game is required to have a demo, and like many others, I tried the demo and was thoroughly turned off by it.

Yes, it seems all those quarters I've been tossing into wishing wells over the past few months are working.

The same thing happened with Space Giraffe and pretty much all XBLA games. The big name games get rushed out the door as fast as possible while the smaller games like this get pushed further and further down the schedule. If you listen to any XBLA developer you know how it works.

i loved gridrunner ++ (there's a demo available on Minter's website) so if this is the same as that, but with pretty HD graphics, i'll be happy to give it a try.

I don't understand why everyone grabs words from an angry llamas mouth and take offense. For him to complain about the close-minded nature of everyone shouldn't make him a bad person. He just finds gameplay to be a subject with more depth then a frog crossing the road.
