After a recent article at Gamepro in which they compared current console titles against one another and pronounced the PS3 as the best of the bunch, Microsoft Marketing Director Albert Penello had a few choice words to say. Basically, he felt they were dead wrong, which I'm not sure I entirely disagree with. Here is a quote:
"We have to disagree with your conclusion that the trend of Xbox 360 versions of games being best is changing, especially when you look at the entire catalog of multiplatform titles available," he wrote in a rebuttal.
"The cold, hard truth is that Xbox 360 has the best games - and industry reviewers and consumers agree."
Having been recently sucked into the most resonant RPG I've played in ages on the 360, I can't help but lean towards supporting Mr. Penello here, but numbers still show the Wii in the lead, with 360 second and PS3 third. I think the average gamer would likely name the 360 their favorite, while the casual gamer likely favors the Wii due to ease of play and simple titles. Of course, those very qualities are what make hardcore gamers squirm with hatred for the console, so it seems those features should be a double-edged sword.
Of course, I'd be more likely to cheer on my PS3 if I looked at its game library and saw the diversity that I crave when it comes to gaming. Where are my RPG titles, my indie gems, my quirky Katamaris? I still have great faith in the possibilities for the console, but for now my 360 come sout on top, considering that's the console that gets turned on every day.

Hmmmm..I wonder how many comments this post will get??
Someone from Microsoft says 360 games are better? Really? ;)
I'd say, at the moment, the games coming that come out for both consoles are pretty even but MS has the headstart on the sheer volume of good titles. For me, it's still going to take some time for this Sony momentum to pull them in front but I have no doubt in my mind that they will.
wow. i couldnt agree with you more. and i cant wait to see the fanboys take on this.
I agree with colette. I have all three consoles and the 360 is the only one I play on a daily basis. (followed closely by the DS) I think that PS3 could take over the next year, but they are going to have to 1) improve online play, 2) improve the framerate of multi-platform games, and 3) release MGS4 already goddammit!
I sense a fanboy war...
I agree.
The simple truth is that currently the 360 has a much more robust game library.
@vexed - grab the gas, Ill get the matches
I've got the marshmallows!
The Wii is lead in hardware, sure. What about software? I know a while ago MS was tooting its horn on selling more games, I thought that was still the case.
I have all three and if could only take one with me on a desert island it would have to be my 360 (and a extended warranty).
I am absolutely shocked -- shocked! -- to see Microsoft Marketing Director Albert Penello saying such things.
Wait a minute, he didn't respond to the referenced article and neither did this post. I don't get it.
Trust me, I would have attacked the guy full force if he had said something dumb, and yeah, obviously he's a rep so he's going to say good things about his own console. I just so happen to agree with him.
What a great line. What a great compliment. "It's the console I turn on every day."
Me too!
Isn't the original article comparing the performance of recent multi-platform releases? And then the responses here deal with catalog titles and exclusives?
It's not really a response to anything so much as a completely independent statement that Microsoft has more and better games.
The only game I've ever played on both consoles was Skate. I must say that the 360 version was actually much better. The frame rate in the PS3 version was absolutely terrible at a lot of different parts of the game.
But that's the only game I've tried on both systems, so I can't really say which one has the better games.
He's right. Only thing worth mentioning arriving on PS3 in the next month or two is Prologue. That's half a game. When MGS4 arrives in summer, the balance will start to shift in Sony's favour.
Microsoft exec says Microsoft product superior! In related news, George Bush still says America best country on Earth. China disagrees, says it is superior.
More at 11. Back to you, news room.
true
MGS4 will be amazing, but 360 still has the better catalog of games to pick from.
By the way, Lost Odyssey is really good.
"It's the console I turn on everyday"
It truly is the best thing that you can say about a games console.
I own both and the 360 gets the lionshare of my gaming time with the occasional excursion to Paradise city on the PS3 (which I also own on the 360 and prefer the multiplayer of the 360 version)
Gamepro didn't say anything about the ps3 having a better library, that was brought up by Penello in his defense of the 360. Which, by the way, simply changed the topic without directly disputing the point gamepro was trying to make.
Gamepro was just saying that all multi-platform games aren't ALWAYS better on the 360.
There's always something to play on the 360. I do agree.
What's discussed in this article and what was discussed in the Gamepro article are 2 completely different things. It wasnt about which console has the best library, it was about the trend where 360 games are usually better on PS3, and you'd have to be blind to disagree that the trend is fading. They used some games and explained their opinions. Reading comprehension helps a ton.
Err, where I say "360 games are usually better on PS3," I meant to say "multi-plat games are usually better on 360."
The non-denial denial is a staple of people filled to the brim with shit. Three of the four games in the GamePro article were given to the PS3 over the 360. Assassin's Repetition...err.. Creed is definitely better on the 360, but Burnout and DMC4 are superior on PS3. I was surprised they gave COD4 to the PS3, but it does work really well.
The cold, hard truth is that he issued one of the most blatantly evasive statements I've seen in a long time. That or he didn't read the GamePro article at all.
I think the PS3 is really gonna do something with itsself this year as far as quality and quantity of games. As it stands right now, Colette nailed it. For many of the "general populous" the Wii has got everything they would want. For us hardcore gamers, the 360 is where its at.
I'm not so much of a videophile or audiophile to really see a big enough difference in presentation to make me not purchase one over the other. I'm not saying the difference isn't there, I just personally don't think its a big deal in most games. There is the occasional game where the difference is drastic, but I can't even think about which ones those are off the top of my head.
Also, Achievements :D
You Wii and PS3 trolls are missing the point. Microsoft's Marketing Director says 360 games are superior to PS3. Are you the marketing director of a major gaming corporation? Yeah, I didn't think so.
Respect the news. It's not like this is some cblog where somebody just says they like one of the systems over the other ones.
Microsoft Marketing Director says 360 games are superior to PS3. Sony Marketing Director says Microsoft is "a total dick." Nintendo.com prints the story, but translates it into family-friendly premade messages for consumption on the Wii's online service.
I just had to clean the dust off of my PS3 again today. Poor thing only gets used whenever I purchase a new Blu-ray movie.
"I turn on the console everyday"
That does not say that one console has the best games. I played Orange Box almost non-stop for MONTHS. I may have turned on the system almost everyday but it wasn't to play games, it was to play A GAME.
Once MGS4 comes out, don't you think people will be turning that on a lot? Especially with multi, they could be hooked. That doesn't mean they have the best games, just that they have a GOOD game.
I have to agree with Penello. Right now, the 360 definitely has the better games. I'm not sure how long it will last but I do think we will notice a shift in the quality of games on the PS3 sometime in the future.
Game content yes they are and on most game ports they are technicaly better running looking games.
I have a xbox 360 and ps3 and the best looking ps3 game looks like an xbox 360 game and all console games loook like 3 year old pc games.
I have to agree with myself. Enjoying video games is where it's at.
Who reads Gamepro, anyway? Gamepro is trash.
I Can't Believe It's Not Butter marketing exec sez: "Our product is most definitely not butter."
"We have to disagree with your conclusion that the trend of Xbox 360 versions of games being best is changing, especially when you look at the entire catalog of multiplatform titles available,"
Honestly, I don't think anyone disagrees that the XBox 360 does have the best selection of games currently, but this is changing over time.
The sad thing is that in the end the 360 and the PS3 will end up having most of good the same games available on both with their own exclusives thrown in, but the 360 will always have the crappier hardware to go along with the games.
Microsoft's Marketing Director says 360 games are superior to PS3
Just to emphasize the important note here, he says that the 360 has the best games. He does not say that the games are superior in regards to multiplatform titles, just that they have more high rated games than the PS3. They also have a ton more very low rated games than the PS3, meaning the 360 games are also inferior to the PS3...
Gah, damn fingers. What I meant to say is: "The sad thing is that in the end the 360 and the PS3 will end up having the same good games available on both with their own exclusives thrown in, but the 360 will always have the crappier hardware to go along with the games."
Why can't Ps3 fanboys accept the truth. Ps3 game library is either port of 360 games or so so exclusive for NOW.
I have 360 I i think the hardware is crap and too loud (cept the contrllers) and we should have HD mandatory.
That's not being anti 360 it's just common sense!
Why can't Ps3 fanboys accept the truth. Ps3 game library is either port of 360 games or so so exclusive for NOW.
I'm not refuting the NOW, nor do I think GamePro (whoever the heck they are) is either. I think they are saying that PS3 will end up on top in the end. Honestly, I think PS3 will be lucky to get to even with the XBox 360 in the next two years, but I still buy games for my PS3 first for various reasons.
I'm eager to see what happens with the Ps3. They are pumping updates after updates to the firmware (i know I have a devkit on my desk :p)
My wish is that PSN becomes so good it forces microsoft to allow for free stuff like mods/maps and lower the cost of Live. That would be sweet! (go competition!).
Who gives a rip.
I'd argue the Vii has a better game lineup than the Wii if someone offered me a cupcake, much less a career gig. So the hell what? It don't mean anything other than it's nice to get paid to flap your lips.
I'm happy with my PS3 games and can't wait for the line up of games coming out, exclusives or not. MGS4, RE5, Killzone2, GOW3, FF, Silent Hill, Haze, LBP...
The 360 does have more games and you can't argue with that but every one has different tastes and prefrences so as Psychedelic Sex Machine said some people may think the Wii has the best games as thatt's they style they like.
I am happy with my ps3 as well, wipeout hd and MGS4 are what I look forward to the most and I have enjoyed warhawk and uncharted recently. It is personal taste but I would not put Lost Odyssey on top of any best list as far as rpgs go and that is what I play the most and it left a pretty eh taste in my mouth.
I have every console and rarely, if ever, use my PS3 to play games. It plays Blu-Ray, DVDs and Divx for me, but that's it. 360 and Wii are games consoles for me. PS3 is far behind them both. I'm still trying to justify the purchase. Not happy with it.
I almost wish these stories wouldn't get posted. The vortex of stupidity created by both sides' fanboys is unbearable.
At the moment, he is correct. The 360 has, by far, the better selection of games and features. The only strength Sony has is more reliable hardware and ever-increasing promise. I do think that this is Sony's year to catch up, though. They're finally pulling things together. However, until that happens...
Well, let's just say, "Soundwave superior, Constructicons inferior." Make of that what you will.
my 360 turns me on every day too.
wait, what?
"Trust me, I would have attacked the guy full force if he had said something dumb, and yeah, obviously he's a rep so he's going to say good things about his own console. I just so happen to agree with him."
Cus your an xbox fanboy. This has to be one of the worst articles ive ever read Colette, plz go back to writing school. It makes no sense at all.
So I guess I'm in that niche between casual-Wii and hardcore-360. Rather take the PS3 anytime because the two others bore the daylights out of me.
I got a PS3 knowing most of my friends have a 360 and the 360 has a better lineup overall. I prefer Uncharted, and to be honest, FF13 persuaded my decision. Its my personal taste, plus MGS4 looks good, and White Knight Chronicles.
But right now, overall best games library goes to 360. I'd get one if I could, but I don't see that happening any time soon, lol.
I agree, the 360 has the best overrall library at the moment, the PS3 barely has anything and the Wii even less.
I don’t turn my PS3 on every day...but that’s because it’s always on, folding proteins when I’m not using it for games, movies, music, etc.
Now why would a marketing director say such a thing?
...I turn on my PS3 every day. Can't we all just get along?
yea maybe he should have said, "yea, you know youre right. You're correct. multiplatform games do peform better on the ps3." Good article destructoid. its starting to look a lot like joystiq in here.
considering the source, I wouldn't give too much credibility to this report, however, I've got a 360 myself :-)
as someone with both a PS3 and 360 (i am a billionaire), even if the tide is turning a bit and multi-platform games are starting to shine on the PS3 i am still more likely to purchase those games on my 360, both for online play and (pathetically) achievements.
if a PS3 version of an upcoming multi-platform title is said to blow the 360 version out of the water, i would probably go PS3 but i don't see that happening for a while, if at all. it costs so much to develop a game that most game developers just aren't going to sink that much time into making a multi-platform title that maxes out the PS3's specs and the 360's specs respectively.
and, even though the article cited in this post had nothing to do with the MS exec's quote, i will add this about the game libraries of the two systems. the 360 does have more games (obviously) and better exclusives right now, but three of its strongest and most popular titles—halo 3, bioshock, gears of war—are shooters, shooters, shooters. i just finished playing Uncharted on the PS3, and loved it. a ton of fun, and genre-wise/experience-wise there are no 360 exclusives i can compare it to. same goes for ratchet & clank. and warhawk.
and some of this year's upcoming PS3 releases, including LBP, EchoChrome and, to a lesser extent, MGS4, only reinforce and build on that diversity. i can't think of a single 360 exclusive announced for 2008 that strikes me as being as exciting or original as any of those. of course all three of those titles could turn out to choke on a dick sandwich, but i do appreciate the effort.
In retaliation, Sony says Blu-ray has more space than DVD. Also, Lemmings!
I really can't argue. The PS3 and Wii have their moments, but the 360 is definitely in the PS2's position from last generation, though not anywhere near as successful.
