Many IT professionals consider their practices tantamount to extortion, and they've been at it for decades now.
I wouldn't be surprised if there's another reason they pulled out. Maybe Microsoft and the BSA are cooking up some other draconian legislation they believe has a better chance of becoming law.
Here's more info on the BSA (wikipedia), in case anyone's interested in their nefarious history.
Just like politicians when it comes to any law having to do with entertainment or technology... Just like normal everyday people when it comes to just about any bill/article/politics.
Seriously, shove a few key words into any bill or article and people become completely blind to everything else going on -then complain when they get fucked by it later. (Also see: Presidential candidacy and the presidential race)
I like to think that's exactly what happened. If these corporations actually read the bill and saw what sort of damage it could do and knowingly supported it, FUCK ALL OF THEM! But honestly, I definitely felt that the authors of that bill saw an opportunity to take control of the Internet and start monopolizing it and profiting off of it and just used piracy as a way to gain support from some major players. After more light has been shined on the effects it could have - like completely eliminating tons of small businesses that operate over the web and websites just like this one - many supporters have had second thoughts or changed their minds completely. At this point, I believe if SOPA ever does pass, it will be a completely different monster, one with out all the underhanded overreaching bullshit.
One can only hope.
Sneaky ass politicians and thousand page bills that no one even reads.
SURE LETS PASS IT THEY'LL NEVER KNOW.
GamePro could be saved!
EA dropping support of SOPA.
That's the whole joke, right there. Because it's never going to happen.
With MS now in opposition, it pulls the rug out from under SOPA's "anti-piracy" claim of legitimacy. As primarily a software company, MS has more piracy concerns than those running web-based services.
Hopefully this turns the tide and brings about SOPA's demise.
I too also like the read Destructoid's site, and is always the first site I go to, to actually read about my hobby and get the latest info. So for SOPA to actually threaten what I enjoy about the internet, is also the thing that drives my hobby to where it is today, spending cash on games, which in turn puts money into pockets of the corporations who want to end my enjoyment, which in turn will see me, and many others not giving a fuck about their games or machines anymore. So fuck them. If SOPA happens you may as well kiss the internet good bye and gaming, really!
Also, I don't see ea or ninty backing away from this anytime soon.
This is the bill that never ends. Yes, it goes on and on, my friends. Some people started backing it, not knowing what it was, and they'll continue backing it forever just because this is the bill that never ends...
Good call. I think I'm just going to arbitrarily throw it into the name of any big producer/publisher.
Ni$tendo, $ony, m$, e.art$, v$lve, moja$g, $ctivision etc
Dude, if you think SOPA is anti-American, you should read up on the NDAA - a bill to allow indefinite detention of anyone deemed a 'terrorist,' including US citizens. Basically, if someone reports that you are working with terrorists, the military can come and pick you up and imprison and interrogate you for as long as they want. No phone calls, no attorneys, NO TRIAL. Due process is out the window. You have NO RIGHTS. Fuck the constitution and all that important shit it says.
What's really scary is that it already passed the house 406-17. 93% of our fucking representatives think this is okay! 93% percent!
Good luck being a Muslim in this country. Good luck protesting shit. Good luck having a negative opinion of the government and their actions. If we're not all good boys and girls going along with the herd, they will have the power to put us away for good. Nothing will stand in their way.
Canada, here I come.
Glad to see one of the level-headed Dtoiders is aware of the situation though :)

On topic: It must be embarrassing for a huge company to have just tacked it's name onto something it didn't read. I'm sure any lawyer would have a good, hearty chuckle at any other sucker that signed a piece of paper without reading it.
You just said what I'm being thinking of for a while now. I'll probably move to Canada myself if I can ever get a job. I need to read up on their current events, but I know that when world news is brought up on TV, Canada is usually never a topic. For my sanity, I'm going to move there.
@Syn They give you the foil hat treatment? Tell them to grow up and take an interest in their country or we're all doomed.
Yes SOPA is horrible and needs to be stopped, but don't only focus your attention on this one, there is much worse that is going on right now, we just need to put congress out of a job, getting paid to fuck us over and no one pays attention to it.
Also, fuck this whole SOPA thing. At first, since I'm european I didn't knew what this was about, but then someone told me about it and I realised we have some bullshit really similar to it in Spain, so yes. Fuck this and fuck that.
