While this might just be one of those things that is getting blown out of proportion thanks to the fact that the previous model of the Xbox 360 crashed more often than a Kennedy on a bender, it has been reported that the new Xbox 360 "Slims" are getting a "Dot of Death" from overheating much as their predecessors did.
The new 360s cannot get a RRoD, of course, because they have no red lights and they have that handy shutdown feature, but that doesn't seem to be stopping them from crashing. Microsoft has responded to the issue with this quote:
"We couldn't be more proud of the consoles we are building now, as well as the new Xbox 360. This console is the culmination of years of continuous innovation in design, testing and learning. Today we are confident we are shipping a high quality product."
Uhhh, thanks for not responding to the issue at all. Glad you think you've been innovating and all that, but if these new 360s are going to pull the same sh*t the old ones did we're just going to have to keep buying them and playing your games like we did on those as well. That'll show you, Microsoft.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I actually think this is MS saying "we think your fucking nuts". OR "we don't give a fuck about your opinion". Lets hope its not the latter.
Seriously, this has to be bullshit, even with the new safety feature that is suppose to prevent overheating, its already breaking? IN JUST OVER A WEEK!?
I'm sorry but this is ludicrous, they only make the best PC platform, because of the huge leg up and monopoly on the software.
It's easy to be the best when there is no competition. You must be on planet Microsoft because they are definitely one of the worse, this is the ONLY reason MAC is so successful because of Microsoft's failures at software. Look at Zune and look at Ipod, Ipod is clearly the superior software architecture.
I can't believe what you guys put up with
The Wii is the only totally reliable system of the bunch.
The people who are saying it is crashing are the people who bought them. These systems aren't about to be released, they've been out for a week now.
@HaVoK308
If Microsoft responded in any way to any kind of allegations, a reputable site should write an article about it. As you said, it's been floating for weeks, Destructoid only said something AFTER microsoft did, which makes it news worthy. This article even STARTS with a comment about how the truth of these crashes may be blown out of proportion. You might want to read the article more closely before you go off on "unprofessional" it is.
There will always be problems with electronics regardless of who the manufacturer is
M$ makes more software. Not necessarily better. Most PS exclusives $#!t on xbox games, in both graphics and gameplay.
That's because the PS3 failure rates are below the commonly accepted consumer hardware level. Which means under 10%. I believe the last figure I saw was between 7% and 10% for PS3. On the higher side, but still considered acceptable. The last 360 numbers were between 35% and 45%. Well outside the levels that are generally accepted. That's why PS3 fail rates are generally ignored.
Although you're right about one thing: Wii fail rates are under 5%. Nintendo makes bloody indestructible systems.
Granted, I've been lucky, my 360 has never failed, nor has my PS3. Then again, I treat my 360 as if it is made of glass and filled with the souls of the dead.
For crying out cornflakes
To quote Jerry Seinfeld, "Who ARE these people!?"
TODAY? What about the people who bought a 360 three years ago? I hate those statements. "We used to sell crap. But now it's working great!"
'But still,PC is the dominant console
PLATFORM,dude, platform.
That only affected older models and only lasted for a couple days before it was fixed. The only damage that was inflicted through that was software damage, which is fixed via a patch. It sucked, but it wasn't a massive hardware failure, and you didn't need to replace your system, rather just plug it into the internet. The literal worst case scenario with the internal clock failure was the loss of a few trophies. Even if your system was somehow actually messed up that bad from the clock error, then you're just incredibly unlucky and fall within that 6-10%. Remember, your personal console failures and bad luck do not override the statistical number of hardware failures. The Jasper 360's are fixed to avoid RROD, but still suffer from other hardware failures. I believe that unit's fail rate is closer to 20-25%, last I heard.
@CUDpwns
It is an issue, but the Yellow light of death is statistically infrequent and is considered at an acceptable level. The highest fail rate is the 60gig backwards compatible unit has a fail rate around 20% (which is unacceptable) because it has extra components in that contribute to overheating. You can literally cook an egg on it after running it for a few hours. The slim model PS3 has an incredibly low fail rate, around 5%. Of course, you could get unlucky and be in the 5%, but it's a rather safe gamble. You have about the same shot at buying a toaster and having it break down.
"Jasper 360s are RROD Immune, jaspers are the newest non slim models . "
That is a complete lie. There are PLENTY of people who have still gotten the RRoD on the Jasper chipset 360s. Go do a goodle or youtube search for 5 seconds and you'll see. The RRoD rate is definitely reduced thanks to the smaller, cooler-running chipset, but the hardware is so faulty that this one change does not eliminate the chance of an RRoD.
Your single PS3 experience does not counter the fact that the overall 360 failure rate is somewhere around 5 to 10 TIMES that of the PS3 by all estimates, studies, and pollings.
This hardware crap is literally the ONLY thing that has prevented me from getting a 360 by this point. I had no reservations buying a used fatty PS3 off of ebay 6 months after launch for $350, but I just CAN'T bring myself to buy a new 360 for half that thanks to it's undebatable unreliability.
Makes me wonder how different the console war landscape would be without this nagging issue. How many of MS's total 360 sales are rebuys? Are repairs/refurbs factored in at all? Would the total system numbers be higher or lower if the failure rate wasn't as ridiculous as it is?
Hahaha love it :]
right... i mean, console wars are SOOOO last year.
It's all about the movement control wars now
K1N3CT 1S TEH SUCK!!!!!!
I hope you're not referring to me when talking about fanboys. I love my 360 and feel it's a good system, but from a hardware perspective it is a piece of shit. Fail rates are what they are, and just because you're fine with them, or you were lucky and havn't had a failure yet, doesn't mean that it isn't a major problem. I feel the 360 fail rates are unacceptable, but I still want to play Dead Rising and Deadly Premonition, so they got me by the balls.
I preferred the 360 over the PS3 early on because it was the only system with anything decent to play. But recently the PS3 has been rocking software wise, and dealing with the nearly constant returns of 360 hardware to the game store I worked at was a bit worrying. I'm about as console agnostic as you get.
Really, raising complaints against a piece of hardware that fails nearly half the time is something any logical, sane person would do.
Although, I realize that logic and sanity are rare traits among fanatical gamers.
That being said, I highly doubt that the problem is completely fixed. Perhaps it's been knocked back to a ten to thirty percent failure rate, but it's hard for me to fathom that everything's working perfectly now.
Also, I don't have a slim.
Of course it hasn't happened to you. That's why the Xbox 360 failures rates are 35-40%, not 100%. Anyways, so what if it hasn't happened to you? RROD is still real, isn't it? By the way, your PS3 fanboy theory is stupid. That would be like saying Xbox 360 fanboys made up the YLOD just because I haven't gotten the YLOD on my PS3 yet.
PS3 prices were outrageous?... Yet some people were dumb enough to buy Ipads, aka $500-$600 IPods with bigger screens... which I was dumb enough to buy.
