Microsoft repair center rapes one of a kind Xbox 360 photo

We've all heard of the constant horror stories about the plague known as RRoD. Hawty McBloggy brings word of possibly the worst case of RRoD yet. Nathaniel suffered the RRoD syndrome just like a majority of Xbox 360 owners out there. Usually it's just a simple process of shipping off the console to get repaired. Unfortunately for Nathaniel, it wasn't just as simple as that.

Nathaniel has taken his 360 with him to various events where members of Rooster Teeth, Bungie and the Xbox 360 team had signed his console. Not only that, but the comic artist over at Rooster Teeth had drawn an awesome looking Master Chief on the 360. Nathaniel contacted Microsoft before sending in his 360 who ensured Nathaniel that he would receive the exact same Xbox 360 back from Microsoft. Nathaniel even included a letter with the 360 to insure no harm would come to the unit (which you can read on Hawty's blog).

Well, Nathaniel did receive the exact same 360 back, but some jackass decided to clean the Xbox 360 case. Keep in mind that all the custom work was done with sharpie so some jerk really took their time to destroy the work of art on the system. All that was left were a couple of smudge marks.

Seriously, how in the f*ck does someone look at the signatures and drawings and think for one second that they should clean the case down?! Microsoft assured him that he would receive his one of a kind Xbox 360 back unharmed and some guy who had way too much time on his hands destroyed the system. Hopefully he'll be able to run into the people who signed his system originally and get them to sign it again. It's pretty doubtful Microsoft will do anything to help the kid out.

Seriously, this is Customer Service's fucking fault. He better get some fatass compensation (like the price of another Xbox and/or Bill Gates and all the RvB crew signatures and some sort of custom faceplate just for him). I love my Xbox 360 to death, but I still sympathize with this guy, and find the level of fucking retardation present in this failure to be unforgivable.

Bright side: He's got pictures of it. Microsoft should contact all the signers and get them to do up a purdy elite with silver sigs and a free year of LIVE.

The guy shouldn't have sent off a collector's item, what a dumbass. Any super nerd who recognizes it is gonna steal it. Anything that has a celebrity signature is instantly sealed and archived. He never should've turned the thing on once the sharpie hit the plastic, buy another one, there's plenty more 360s out there and one of yours....jackass...

Do you think the average mexican factory worker knows or cares who rooster teeth are? I don’t think so. It goes down an assembly line and probably one guy cleans every box that comes in…thats his only job is to clean the outside. Day and night cleaning boxes. He most likely doesn’t know how to not clean one, because if a dirty one got out he would be fired and his family would starve.

I guess I’m the devils advocate here. The people saying sue microsoft are idiots. The signatures have no monetary value just sentimental. Did he go to all these events for just signatures or did he go to have a good time, meet people and play games? It sucks and i feel a little sorry for him, but the fact is something so precious to him should never have left his possession no matter how much he was assured it would be fine.

Despite anyone blaming this kid for not seeking out a replacement case first, he did everything anyone is suppose to do in this situation. I cannot find him at fault.

Having said that, I think this is the first time I have ever felt physically sick due to the incompetence of Xbox 360's customer service. I can't remember if I have ever dealt with someone in person or over the phone that fucking stupid in my life.

I had my PS3 signed by Koji Igarashi...

I also bought an Xbox 360 Elite about a week ago, only to have problems with it working right out of the box. A first for me in my 19 years of gaming. Not the best way to start off...

While I wouldn't have sent the 360 away if I had such sentimental stuff on it, and I do think poor Nathaniel might have been naive there . . .

That's terrible. Microsoft should issue a full apology, fire the guy, and ask Bungie to send the guy some free artwork, minimum.

Whoever wiped it has no soul. Sharpie doesn't just rub right out, so dude would have had to work at it for quite a while.

But this is the exact reason I only have people sign faceplates. If my 360 or GH3 controller fuck up, all I have to do is pop the face off and no harm will come to my beloved autographs.

who would send back a console with that written on it, let alone one with heavy sentimental value?

It's a pretty shitty thing, but let's face it... Microsoft has done a lot to try and spruce up their image lately. If the kid bitches, he will get something in return, and it will probably wind up being better than anything he had before.

So get the fucking sand out of your god damned vaginas, people.

@DrNutt

I think you may have missed the point. Even if they gave him a 360 Elite, it won't replace the signitures and artwork that was on his original 360. And the vaule IN the 360 were those things.

As for this story:

It really is sad, but hounestly, he shouldent have sent it into be repaird. He should of just bought a new 360 to avoid such a fucked up thing from happining.

Meh, I feel sorry for the guy. But Microsoft promised they would send the exact same unit back (which they did) And some 40 yr old illegal immigrant on an assembly probably thought they would do the guy a favor and clean his xbox before they sent it back.

He just had a shitty situation but I certainly don't think it's grounds for a lawsuit or even a fuck you for Microsoft.

Dude I would so sue their asses...But then again, MS owns the universe. You have proof that MS gave you their word that they would bring your console back the way it was, but yet, they didn't. It would be a double the points if it really was an illegal working on it.
I wouldn't take a tragedy like this sitting down,I break out the fucking rockets!

Poor kid

I've dealt with enough RRoDs and MS Customer service to not be surprised by his story, and the fact the kid did the "right thing" and got screwed is just another example of how terrible they are.

Boo MS! Hook this guy up!

Someone on a forum I am part of happens to be a member of the Xbox team, and on occasion is sent down to check on the facility that does the repairs, which in fact is not a part of Microsoft, but a company in Mexico wholly independent of MS. According to him the procedure is.

"Console gets unboxed and scaned into the system there
Console undergoes a cleaning scrub with rubbing alochol (and any stickers are removed if they are on it)
Repair sheet is attached that says what is supposed to be wrong with it and has checkboxes for spots should it fail at all our tests.
Console undergoes screening/stress tests, and repairs if nessessary
Paper gets removed from console
Console undergoes another cleaning scrub
Console gets packed and sent back

So the people claiming that MS purposley removed the ink are wrong.
That letter the guy put in the box wouldnt have done anything, becuase nobody speaks english so it would have just been disregarded.

All console repair is done by Jabil (3rd party) with only a light MS presence for administration purposes. Plus the worker mentality in mexico is different than here. People are easily replaceable there. They have certian quotas to meet or else they get axed for poor performance.

So here people might think and go ask someone if they should really clean the console.

Not down there, they would do it without hesitation becuase they gotta get them all done."

If it was a Sharpie, how was it removed? Sharpie's use permanent ink. Unless they used nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol?

@Orionsaint: Yeah, that’s what I suggested in my comment (scroll way up). Acetone is the main active ingredient in nail polish remover, and it’s an organic solvent that will dissolve permanent marker pretty easily. But the comment directly above you (from mrberns) seems to confirm that the repair team cleans all consoles with rubbing alcohol, and that would probably do the trick as well.
