Microsoft reckons Halo: Reach beta will help sell ODST photo

Microsoft knows that the Halo 3 beta sold copies of Crackdown, and at least one company representative believes that the Halo: Reach beta -- a thing that is packed in with every copy of Halo: ODST -- will sell copies of the upcoming Halo title to both potential and old fans alike.

“The only way to access this beta will be through the Halo 3: ODST disc, so we feel there’s another extremely compelling reason for both fans and newcomers to the franchise to experience Halo 3: ODST,” Microsoft’s head of gaming and entertainment devices UK, Stephen McGill, revealed to MCV in a recent interview.

“We saw the success of this mechanic with the Halo 3 multiplayer beta that came on the Crackdown game disc and the continued sales momentum and excitement generated around that title throughout its lifecycle, and we fully expect Halo 3: ODST to exceed that achievement,” McGill said.

McGill added that the Reach beta is a “great way” to puff up Halo: ODST’s shelf life, and it should give Microsoft marketers plenty of ammo to use for the title in 2010.

Of course, we’re pretty sure ODST doesn’t need the boost -- price gouging or not, this game will sell like hotcakes Halo. Still, McGill's comments are interesting: are any of you planning to buy ODST just for the Reach beta?

Adding features sells more games? Shocking!

Hey, worked for Crackdown didn't it?

Though I'm super curious as to what makes Reach's gameplay so much different then all the others. Guess I'll find out in a few days or so.

Should've done what they did last time and bundled it with a non halo game that they though needed a helping hand.

Although on second thoughts, lets say the beta doesnt actually activate for a few more months and then they advertise the fact ODST has a beta, that could be a good way to grab in a few more sales.

Really? I didn't think we knew enough about Halo: Reach to be excited about it. And unlike the Crackdown thing, where people bought a game they wouldn't have to play a beta they wanted, why would people be super excited about a beta for a game that will play pretty similarly to the game they're buying? Or to put it another way, is anybody other than a Halo fan going to want the Reach beta, and if somebody is a Halo fan, weren't they going to get ODST anyway?

Seems to me that if you're not interested in ODST, you won't be interested in Reach. This seems like it'd only appeal to people who have a real thing for betas. Oh well. As a guy who knows absolutely nothing about Reach - other than it's Halo and it's an FPS - I'm pumped to try out the beta.

Would work better if the beta was in a non-Halo game.

Well at least this time, the consumers will be buying this game by what it is itself.

Do we even know what Reach is? Do you play a Spartan? Is it the squad of Spartan II's on reach? Is it squad based? I have been avoiding Bungie hype like the plague, because their marketing department is really good at getting people to buy everything.

Well, as a Halo fan, I was going to buy this game anyway, the beat is just a plus. If they wanted this to really take off, then they should have packed it in with another game. Still, looking forward to okaying ODST and eventually Reach.

Wut? Is Microsoft saying that ODST is a poor game and that they need to add a Halo:Reach beat in it in order to boost sales? Are there even any gameplay trailers of Halo:Reach?

Also, Crackdown was a kickass game. A shame that it had to get piggybacked by Halo 3 in order to boost sales.

So... big question is what the hell makes Halo: Reach even need a beta for players to try it?... unless it makes some drastic changes, a Halo: Reach Beta could probably be simulated by just playing Halo ODST... ok, ya sure, the real purpose of a beta is bug testing, which every game needs, but most think of it like a free trial

I'm suprised by this. M$ admits to packaging it as a bundle in an attempt to get more consumer dollars, yet they completly miss the fact that this is probably going to be their best selling game for awhile anyways. Not to mention the similarity of titles. like, ndschroede23 said, who would be enticed by the deal who doesn't already want ODST?

They should have said that they were doing this as a service/bonus for their loyal supporters. Would've looked classier. Seriously, I wonder about these guys running video-game companies these days. It's like they're completely out of touch with their own market and products. :/

Ok though really... What is MS smoking?
Halo 3 helped crackdown game sales because crackdown was a new IP with no preexisting fandom... So they used halo fandom to help instead...

Halo ODST on the other hand is ALREADY riding on the halo fandom... What MCgill is essentially saying is that they are using Halo fandom to sell a Halo game... can you say redundant? Honestly if people don't care about Halo enough to get ODST, then they unlikely to care enough about Halo Reach to want the Beta

It's a nice extra treat for halo fans, but it's not gonna be boosting sales much

Initial impressions upon reading the title of this article: No, I'm pretty sure that it being a new Halo game will sell ODST.

So...good job acknowledging that at the end.

I forgot about the Reach beta with ODST.

Maybe if we knew more about Reach it'd be a bigger deal. As of right now it's like they're flailing their arms saying "Check out this thing what which has Halo name on it!"

Captain Obvious. The word HALO is on the box. It'll sell itself.

Beta for a Halo game helps non-halo game sell. Please note: does not work in any other combination.

It would have been funnier if they tagged it on to Crackdown 2. It looks like Halo: Reach will be the next multiplayer instalment for the series so for people just interested in the multiplayer it could be a major selling point.

ODST looks solid, it really does. Not a big fan of 720p but it's all good. Beta will have nothing to do with the sales.

I bought Crackdown for the beta and ended up playing it more then the beta. I almost cried when my cousin broke my Crackdown disk.

I have to admit that I was originally planning on getting ODST mostly for the Reach Beta, but after seeing ODST in motion, I have more or less forgot about the Reach Beta. You also gotta remember that you will probably be able to get in without ODST through a random invitation system.
