Microsoft puts the rush on cooler CPUs for 360 photo

Hey, Microsoft, what's the rush? It's not like there's a huge problem with our Xbox 360s or anything.

Actually, there is a huge problem. You probably already know about the recent warranty extension offered to Xbox 360 owners, giving them a full three years of coverage for the consoles that are thought to be over 30% defective. Maybe they're trying to set things right.

The word leaked out of Asian component manufacturers that Microsoft is cracking the whip on the new Xbox 360 mainboard project known as "Falcon". This system replaces old, fatty 90-nanometer processor and graphics chips with 65-nanometer ones, letting the system run cooler with less power consumption. It also stands to save MS up to 50% of previous manufacturing costs.

This is in line with rumors of an upcoming price drop for the Xbox 360 later this year, prossibly right before the holiday season.

It's good to hear that some 'good' Xbox 360s are coming our way, but we would love to know if our current ailing consoles will be relplaced by the "Falcon" versions under this three year warranty extension.

About time! Sweet jesus! I already had one brick out on me. I'd be lying if I said I didn't worry about it happening again everytime I turned my 360 on.

I'm planning on getting that kickass Halo3 addition 360, and I'm hoping that all the bugs and design flaws will be worked out by then.

Please, Microsoft, don't rush this process so much that we end up with a whole new batch of problems.

If so that would suck ass because my 360 is currently at one of their repair shops. At least I should get the new heatsink.

I'm actually having to send in mine this week. It's almost like it was holding on for dear life until the 3-year warranty announcement and just decided "Now's the time." Hopefully it will be the only one I have to send in now that they're actually including improvements.

My box died 2 days ago. Still waiting on its coffin. DAMN YOU MICROSOFT and your 15 minute customer support wait time. I sure hope that I get a falcon back... along with that heatsink addon. Hot damn...

I'm glad they are continuing to own up to the problem, but excuse me for having zero confidence in my box even when it does make its way back from the repair center. If I have to go through this process again they'd better replace it.

The only question I have now is whether or not I should wait to send in my three rings 360 to M$ or wait a bit for the switchover..

The big red power sign looks like it's giving us the finger. A lot of good games are coming so I'm not surprised they owned up and are coming up with "good" units.

Man, I knew I was right to wait! Hop on the bandwagon early, and you get problems.

Hopefully by Christmas I'll actually be able to purchase one.

My 3rd box just recently passed, although the leading cause of murder, RRoD, was not the cause in this case. So I miss out on that mystical 3 year warranty I hear so much about. Eh, o wel!

When I talked to customer service, and the guy told me it was going to cost me $50 to repair it, I asked him if it would be replaced with the new 65nm chips. He said no. Bastard. New heatsinks? Couldn't answer that. I asked him if he had ever heard of project Falcon and he made some wisecracking comment about me laying off the angel dust. Go figure.

Srsly tho, I hope that they have some type of step-up/graduation program where I can just fork over an extra $50 (if not for free) and receive a working version of the 360 when Falcon arrives. Even after all the trouble I have been through with this hardware, I don't want to jump ship. I just want one that I can trust and rely on.

Well, if they can just beat this problem, the 360 will most definitely be the champ of the current gen. I'll just ignore the Sony fanboys. ;)

@uptonogood: We like the 360 because it has good games and an excellent online service. When it works, it's the best. Sony can call me when they finally get a decent library of games and a slicker online service.

Any rumor as to when these chips come out? I am holding out on a 360 when either 1) The Falcon chips are installed and ready to be purchased or 2) The announced price drop happens.

My guess is that they'll do a price drop on the older style consoles until they get a low enough number and then start selling the newly chipped consoles at the reg prices. A mere guess but we'll see.

i've had the same 360 since a few months after it launched and have had no problems at all. i guess i'm one of the lucky one's
i have done things to try and prevent the red rings,ie keep it in a well ventilated area, after my warranty ran out (b4 the warranty extension)i did add the talismoon whisper fan(which i made 12v) that i can control with a fan speed controller, removed & replaced factory thermal paste with OCZ Ultra 5+ Silver Thermal Compound on cpu/gpu i also added mini heatsinks to the other chips on the motherboard then added a small fan to the side of the cpu heatsink.
yes my 360 runs way cooler than it did and i mean alot cooler.
if i could do this on my own you would think microsoft would try at least using a better quality thermal paste rather than the gummy crap they use.
at least microsoft is attempting to fix the problem and extending the warrenty,,,they screwed me over with that lol my warrenty is void now,but with the major temp reduction i was able to achieve i think i may have stopped the red ring ghost in its tracks.....fingers crossed..if by chance i get the red ring of death i'll simply go by a new 360.

It is incredible that MS' game division can pull something like this off and not suffer more of a media backlash :-(

It is simply bad business practice to launch a system with a failure rate close to thirty-three percent, in order to be first to the next-gen market, just because your parent company is swimming in money and you can afford to royally screw up everybody.

I've had 5 friends, all of theirs have gone bad, cept one. and some bought new ones just to have them go bad too. sony didn't rush to market, and made better more reliable hardware. It was the better purchase. and with these new games coming out from sony, i am so happy i didn't buy a 360.

I think people should just jump ship to sony. Because blue ray is winning, and the system works without becoming a brick. i prefer the controllers as well.

so the question arises -- which would you have: a system with lots of games that you can never play or a system that works but with no games to play?

or gamecube 2.0.

Ive had many fun hours playing my 360, it hasnt broken yet, its a great console!!
The reson why there is faith in the machine is that there is nothing to rival it at the moment. If the PS3 had some games and was on a price par you may see a switch!

BUT as we know it hasnt, its sh1t!!

Sony will have a ton of new games. people are being stupid about it. when the 360 launched it was just as bad as the ps3 launch, cept they didnt have oblivion like the ps3 did, or RFOM. so in my opinion, the ps3 had a stronger launch line up than the 360. and this fall, ps3 games will show you epic things like lair and heavenly sword etc etc. those games could never be done on a 360. the ps3 will smoke the 360 completely by this time next year once they learn how to make those co processor scream like they can if they write their code better with a good compiler optimized for the SPE processors.

@hexfix93 & brainderailment

I dont get your comments, who care if the PS3 has a better launch line up, the time is now, the xbox has more games, doesnt matter who had more launch games.
Its not MS fault that Sont delayed thier console, its thier misfortune ans MS' bonus.Id rather have a console which has more games which i can buy cheaper than one which has hardly no games, which these games are ports already and full price! Can you not see the logic in that?
Also xbox is on its second or even third generation of games, and PS3 is only on its first, so ul get better game son the xbox, the developers have had time to work out little tricks and shortcuts.
PS3 can have all the power it wants, no games = no consumers, power isnt everything, look at god of war 2 what a lovely game, and produced on an old platform. Bottom line, Games matter, xbox has games, xbox is cheaper, offers more content.i get it repaired if it goes boom for free. In a throw away culture i dont need a console with a ten year plan!!

There will be a ton of games for ps3 this year alone, and well into the future.. 360 had no games a year ago, and was in the same boat as the ps3. sony took the time to make a console that DOESNT BREAK! so i give them kudos for that.
not to mention the ps3 is twice as powerful as the 360, too bad the ass hat third party developers are still stuck making intel pc type code that is not efficient. they have not even tried to write new good code to take advantage of the spe processors in the ps3, they jsut port their crap code to the ps3. but that will change once people get hdtvs. hdmi is way better than component.

hdmi is standard on the ps3. not so on the 360. sure the elite. but that costs as much as ps3. with no blue ray or wifi..

I have plenty of friends that have never had problems with their 360s, and I'm guessing it's because I'm a grown up, and they don't pile their dirty clothes on it or throw it when they get angry or get cheetos dust all up in the hardware.

^ LaWl kids these days with their filth I've seen a lot of setups where I'm surprised they don't start a fire with all the junk smothering their 360s.

I keep a fan aimed perpendicular to the rear of mine, and I had played it for probably 600 hours (if not more), I mean 200 on Oblivion alone. So many hours spent playing games, plus time watching shows and movies, it still hasn't red ringed. It is absolutely key to have proper ventilation. The fan I use is massive; I wear DJ headphones plugged into the TV just so I can hear over the fan. But it works. Free of dust and everything. I don't know why I got the persistent unplayable disc though..

Props and whatnot for Poonster. That's a dedicated gamer right there. I wish I could do what you did, but my 360 would end up looking like Rosie O'Donnell.

@Nexus you do know a ton means ten dont you? you do know the ps3 isnt acutally twice as powerful as a 360, you do know visually you can hardly tell the difference between cables, you do know that the elite is 100 pounds cheaper than a ps3, you do know that people who buys ps3's dont use the blu ray, you do know that there is a standard hdmi cable coming out for normal 360's,you do know that most 360's do work and its a few that dont, you do know that the PS3 WILL have its problems like the ps2 and psx, you do know that pc's will never die and code will normally be written for them, i like to feel i educate these young people its a nice feeling.
