Microsoft promises/threatens new avatar clothing for the next six months photo

Let the whoring commence! As expected, Microsoft will soon be seeing just how much mileage can be had from avatars by unleashing new downloadable clothing. According to Xbox Live product unit manager Jerry Johnson, the next half a year will see perpetual clothing releases. MS points at the ready!

"We’re going to be continually releasing and unlocking clothes for the next six months," confirms Johnson. "They’ll be coming out in theme packs."

Johnson did not confirm whether or not we'll be expected to pay, but if you believe MS will continue to give away free stuff for this new endeavor, then you've probably answered a few emails from Nigeria.

Would you pay to give your avatar a new bobblehat? How cheap would avatar clothes have to be before you'd consider shelling out your precious Microsoft Monopoly money? Tell us.

FUCKIN' ACE!!

Now Microsoft can finally let me pay them in exchange for wearing their advertisement slathered gear!

why not make clothing/accessory acheivement unlockables on games now. Get 5 headshots in a row and you unlock a lovely head bonnet for you avatar. 5 capitations earns you a beautiful wool scarf. Why not? I dont care about my gamerscore. I want a tweed vest.

@gamesronlygames

Because then they wouldn't make money.

It's a cool idea, though. I'd give up gamerscore points for unlockable dress-up items. No way I'm paying for them, though...unless, as I've said before, they give me the option to make a badass zombie.

Last night, I found pretty much what I wear everyday for my avi. So, no future clothes purchases for me.

No, Nay, Never will I pay for virtual clothing for my avatar. It's unfortunate that there are people who will.

I just wonder how unique each person's avatar is going to be when everyone gets the same 5 or 6 bits of clothing every two weeks...

I too am oddly attatched to my Avatar. I'd pay for special little bits (like a Lancer Rifle, that would be awesome) but not standard clothing.

I'd probably be enticed to pay a slight amount of money if I could put a hockey or football jersey on my avatar. Can't see much else that would coerce me to spend money though.

I also like the idea of unlockable accessories in games (and for that matter, the idea makes so much sense that I assume it'll happen at some point).

Here's what really bothers me. I really wish they put in Acheivement clothes. i mean how awesome would taht be if you unlocked serious 2.0 in gears and got an outfit that looked exactly like the gears' outfit? seems like a great idea that they refused because they want money.

@Danthu

I'd bet that someone will do that actually. There's already games out there that give you exclusive gamerpics and themes when you buy the game/unlock certain achievements. It wouldn't surprise me at all if this happened, and it would most certainly be welcomed.

I need to ask you to support an urgent secret business relationship with a transfer of funds of great magnitude.

I am Ministry of the Treasury of the Nigerian consulate. My country has had crisis that has caused the need for large transfer of funds of 800 billion USD. If you would assist me in this transfer, it would be most profitable to you.

Maybe it was just me but I was a little bummed the only plain t-shirt was baby blue. Would a 'pick the t shirt color' option have been too much to ask?

As I said earlier clothing/accessory acheivements are the way to go. I can understand psn charging as their network is free to begin with-but live is already a charge. Customized unlockable acheivements based upon characters in the game is the way to go. It would set a great precedent and show the gaming community they are not greedy and are willing to give the people who spend 50 a year on live and 60 for the game a bonus here and there. I think 60 on a game qualifies for some unlockable clothes,guns,etc. A higher gamer score is getting old-they need to mix it up and make those acheivements more enticing now since they have adopted this avatar thing.

I don't know if I would pay for more clothes for my avatar. I think my face really looks like me but I would never wear anything available for my avatar...
I'm sure I would spend some spare points on that stuff just like I did for (the now useless) castle crashers theme...

It's not whoring. If people are stupid/enthusiast enough to buy virtual cloth, well more power to Microsoft. I sure know I won't give them a dime for that. Even if I like the avatar concept. (let me play with it in rockband : lol )

I'd much prefer achievement/unlockable accessories.

Let say the 1st ranking person on the leaderboards for X racing games get to have his avatar on a bike. Stuff like that would be cool.

If they provide options from popular games like a Gears of War set of COG Armour, Big Daddy Suit from BioShock, T-51b Power Armour from Fallout 3 or the Vault Jumpsuit or the Shepards Armour from Mass Effect, then yeah, I'd pay a few MS Points for those.

If its regular clothes...then no. I barely spend money on Real Clothes as it is, im not going to buy stuff for a virtual avatar...that'd be all kinds of stupidness.

i dont like the avatars and I was fairly satisfied when I learned that I didn't have to customize an avatar in order to navigate on my xbox. I don't think I ever will customize mine because the dark silhouette is good enough for me...unless they make an invisible suit and I will buy that to make my avatar disappear completely.

Avatars and Mii's are pretentious little cocks.

Where was everyone when MGO did this? Why the hell is LBP doing this? I hate it when this kind of thing happens. I wouldn't mind if they bundled new outfits or what-have-you, for no extra cost, with some Arcade titles. I would obviously see lesser titles getting this treatment more, but you could entice people at launch with free batches of clothes for your avatar. I also really like the idea of unlocking bonus material for avatars through games. I've always felt that if Nintendo ever wanted to try to update the Mii Channel and swing at achievements in one blow, they'd have unlockable clothes and accessories for Miis through games. Doesn't look like they're interested in updating at all though.

As lame as it may seem to PAY for crap like that, I's say 1MS point per article of clothing/accessory. If 1 point is not feasible, then do packs of 5/10 items for 5/10 points.

I also think that games should offer rewards (themes, gamerpics, outfits) for getting acheivements/beating the game.
