I think they're actually planning to monetize the user by using their "monetizer", a beam of pure capitalism fired directly through the Kinect camera that turns the player into piles of gold. Microsoft then dispatch a crack team of "monetizer retrieval technicians" to your house to collect the gold.

I'm really debating whether or not to keep going gold. It's really annoying how getting Gold gives you more access to crap that you have to pay for. I mean, I only use gold for XBLA and going online. So MS is really sticking it deep for me.

As someone who just signed up for Playstation Plus and within a week downloaded over 15 games, including a number of retail releases for free, I don't see myself keeping Xbox Live when my subscription comes up for renewal. I rarely play online anymore, so the only real thing I'd miss out on would be my XBLA titles. I can deal with losing out on those. None of them are platform exclusive anyway. Miscrosoft has tried extremely hard to make me hate Live and they have actually succeeded. Good for them. Mission accomplished.

They have probably mastered alchemy and will start abducting subscribers legally (read the small print) and turning them into gold.
360 gamers did this to themselves, as MS watched them buy 2, 3, 4 systems during the years of RRoD. The base is so brow beaten, they think paying out the butt for CoD, Halo, and sometimes Gears makes them lucky. So sad.

I have to wonder what the breaking point is. What is the line that that Micrsoft will have to cross to cause a noticeable number of people to decline resubing Live? I'm not surprised by this. I just wonder of we're anywhere close to the point where consumers push back and remind the industry that as the purveyors of a luxory good, they should have a little more respect and a little more gratitude for what they are getting, instead of scheming more ways to nickel and dime us.
... more interesting is the fact that people would put this on a linkedin resume when I'm quite sure Microsoft has all kinds of non-disclosure agreements that are signed as part of the hiring process.
It actually creates an interesting legal situation, because people obviously have a right to maintain their resumes and seek alternate work... however, by posting their resumes in a public place and including what could be deemed as confidential information, do they break any of the non-disclosures that they signed? Even if the resume was marked as private and only accessible by paying subscribers seeking employment candidates, it wouldn't prevent journalists from finding the information and potentially publicizing it - though then we get into the legalities of whether they could use his name or not (it being a private resume). In this case it seems to be a public portion of his resume... but it's still a rather interesting HR issue arising from the internet and the openness of information that used to be much more private and much less accessible.

@Tristix: Because current trends in the gaming industry point to things being bad for gamers when a company wants to "monetize furhter". If they actually do something that benefits gamers I'll eat my words, but I'm highly skeptical, and rightfully so.

Isn't Xbox 360 the only platform (including PC) which charges for online multiplayer?
I don't have a 360, so I wouldn't know, but is that really worth paying for when it's free on PS3, PC, Wii, DS/3DS, PSP? Why do people put up with it?

i haven't had a live account for a while but IIRC gold members have it too good if anything, and aught to pay more for the service. can't really remember any of the stuff i was getting for my money but i'm sure it must have been great.
personally i felt so bad for ripping microsoft off that i canceled my account. well i tried anyway. ms were so generous they ignored that and just went ahead and let me keep it. no no, i wouldn't have any of it, i went to the bank and canceled my debit account. even that didn't work, as ms continued to provide me with free XBL for six months before perma-banning me. that's real value for money.
so yeah i either really loved xbl or i hated it so much i want it to be physically manifested as a human being so i can beat its face against the corner of a coffee table till its cheekbones poke out of its ears. i don't really remember to be honest, i mostly play PC now and i'm feeling better about the whole videogames thing.

Bought a year of xbl live on sale in January for 40 and so far it's been the biggest waste of my cash this year.
There just isn't anything here to justify it. Psn lets me play for free,and its paid service gives me stuff for free and discounts items. The performance isn't any better than the other networks, and there are more adds on my dashboard than features.and now come this fall we will probably be milked for something else because lets face it, has anything good ever happened when the word monetize comes up?

Next generations I'm going the PS3 route exclusively. $60 a year is just fucking annoying and no, I don't want to buy virtual clothes for my virtual person.

Probably is something cosmetic that doesn't benefit the consumer but still, that kind of bragging sucks to hear, not that I put Sony above it either. I recently bought a Live subscription to see what all the fuss was about but not only can I not access it but going back and forth with their support (Xbox and Windows Live ID) on various matters has turned me off to all future xbox purchases. Makes the free Sony and PSN/ PC look like heaven for me. Goodbye console party chat and XBLA titles, too bad I never knew you

1. I haven't enabled anyone to do anything with my seldomly-read comment posts on a video game blog, but I appreciate the perception of importance.
2. I didn't say anything was OK, just commented that it's not news that a company, who's sole purpose is to make money, is trying to find more ways to make money. That clearly won't keep you and the rest of the idiots around here acting like this is or should be a surprise.

I hope it's a middle tier between "Xbox Live Free" and "Xbox Live Gold" that strikes a happy middle ground between "no online anything" and "unlimited online everything."
Something that's like $25/year that gives, say, unlimited Netflix, discounts on XBLA games, and 10 hours of multiplayer per month would be fine by me. I don't have a Gold subscription, but I would let Microsoft monetize me for that amount.
