Microsoft: Oh sorry, Project Milo ISN'T just a tech demo photo

Contrary to what Aaron Greenberg has said, Lionhead has refuted the claim that Milo was a mere tech demo and won't be available for public consumption. On the contrary, there is currently a team of fifty people still working on the Milo & Kate project, and Aaron Greenberg himself backtracked on his "not coming to market" claims earlier today.

"Project Milo absolutely continues in development at Lionhead Studios, it is just not a product we plan to bring to market this holiday," tweeted the Microsoft demagogue.

Lately, Microsoft appears to be doing a wonderful impersonation of Sony circa 2007. Arrogant marketing, endless promises, confused public statements and outright contradictory claims. All we need now is for Major Nelson to say that Rumble's a last-gen feature and we'll be in real deja-vu territory.

Thats right pedophiles, Milo is still a go. Get your pre-orders in now.

In all seriousness, what the fuck? A game where you hang out with a small child? I know we've seen this since last year. But what the hell is Microsoft thinking? I feel like everyone who buys this game needs some sit down time with Chris Hansen.

I sure think that a few Kinect die hards will try to explain how this game will be AMAZING.

Real friends are over rated and young kids are too hard to get into the van.

I don't understand how this could effectively work as a videogame...It worked fine as a tech demo to showcase some staged stuff, but that was all it should ever be. If I want to interact with a little boy then I'll go outside and accros the road to a primary school.

Well, the facial recognition stuff could come in handy, as well as voice commands and other deals and what not. I think having actual conservations with NPC's in games instead of just choosing what text to say could be pretty cool.

Even if it gave you lines to read off of, if NPC can react dynamically to how you yourself say said lines (sounding worried, rude, or indifferent), it could really make for some...dare I say it...real immersion.

Honestly, the conservations thing just has me interested, and if this is a step closer in the more responsive and reactive A.I. in the conservation department, where I'm actually apart of the conservation and not playing director, then I'm all for it.

Of course, Peter is Peter, and the man spends more time taking up the amazing instead of making it in real life. Gotta hand it to the guy though, he's got really fucking cool ideas. I'd love to have a conservation with the guy.

You guys should get a Jim vs Peter, one hour interview, TV style, just about the coming future. The two of you throwing out insane ideas for an hour would be to intense for the normal mind.

Now back up a minute.Do you see a ton of generic ass FPS games on this Steam list? I make a joke and you've gone and gotten insulting, not to mention a bit foolish.

I'm just of the mind that this is going to cause more than a few sensationalist headlines in the mainstream media. I mean really, what good can come of this? If bizarre scripted interactions is what people are clamoring for, then the guys who made Facade would be swimming in super models and sports cars.

Milo is NOT a game in development. Now let me be clear here, it is NOT just a tech demo, but it IS in development at Lionhead. But it is NOT a game. Even though it is. Not. It is not a game. But we will be releasing it as a game. Because that's what it is.
I think.

I am glad everyone here has already passed judgment that Milo cant be a game, before they even show up what they are doing with the character. Look at fucking Kinetimals! Its been over a year since Milo was showcased and gave us a promising look at what Kinect could do and now fifty people have been working on it. You guys really dont think they are going to bring something more worthwhile to the table for the final product?

Maybe I am just too optimistic in a pessimistic gaming world

It's already way, way worse than when Sony claimed that rumble was a last generation feature. And not just because Sony's arguments were based on them not wanting to pay some guy's patent ransom, though I think that makes it far more excusable than what Microsoft is doing. Microsoft has gone out of their way to claim that controllers are a last generation feature. All we need now is for one of their puffed up PR flaks to actually put that to words.
nanowerx's Avatar - Comment posted on 06/29/2010 17:23

Since when has Microsoft said controllers are a last generation feature? Much less one they are trying to get away from. They have literally said they only want Kinect for games based around it and a controller for everything else.

Avert your eyes, @hpv....the truth might burn:
http://www.qj.net/qjnet/xbox-360/director-of-platform-marketing-wants-no-call-of-duty-for-kinect.html

Here is a tasty quote:
"We continue to say that the controller is the best experience for controller games. When people say, 'Why don't you have Halo?' Well, I don't want Halo on Kinect. I want Halo on a controller." - Chris Penello (director of platform marketing for Microsoft)

@Daxelman Your ideas intrigue me and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

I can see it now: Mass Effect 5 NOW WITH MEGA IMMERSION! You have to properly answer questions while being interrogated and if your captors don't like your answers(within reason) they beat you some more! Or you have to *really* work at wooing a potential love interest without just mindless side-missions. I like Peter Molyneux's future.

Also, it would be HUGE in Japan because it would make Dating Sim's even more immersive/realistic. "Try to flirt but don't be too nervous!"

You know... For those that are into those kinda things >_>

@hpv:

Microsoft made it strangely clear that motion games and traditional games are two entirely different areas for them. That's consistent with us not seeing motion control-titles with blockbuster series' names slapped on them.

Sony literally said that rumble was a last-gen feature. I don't see how you can compare the two, and I really don't see how you can confuse what the MS PR actually said with what you claim it said.

@Rammstein: The way games are going now, especially action orientated RPGs, if they can actually deliver on what they say, this could be really big, and maybe even fix some of the problems some games face with the conservation system.

Also, I would have no problem getting Tali to be my girl.

O'm not so sure about the mass effect idea. I mean ya it's a great idea, but it would probably take forever to implement it into the game; those NPC's would probably take forever to program. And this is on top of making a top of the line game.

The dating sims are much more plausible though seeing as NPC interaction is the ONLY thing that goes on in those games; now there's a way 360 can get on the map in japan... the interaction seen in the Milo actually does seem to set the ground work for that possibility (which in turn only adds to the creepiness)... i think i'm gonna stop talking before i go into the possibilities of adding motion tracking gloves to the equation

Sure, right, Microsoft.

Once I see that Kinect is capable of this amazing tech, then I may be a believer. But still, even though it's a cool concept, it doesn't make a good game.

To me, Milo & Kate just need to have a sense of humor about what it represents, similar to how Seaman was. I'm...curious about it at least, which is all I think anyone could expect at this point. No one's necessarily chomping at the bit to get a taste of it. It doesn't feel like that type of title.

I like the steady Kinect coverage, but it's funny seeing the opposing ends of the spectrum within the Destructoid staff's responses. Everything from it representing the best of this past E3 for some to Jim's annoyance with the jumbled PR messages coming out about it.

I think it's even funnier seeing the self-selecting community responses for those respective articles. I feel like the only one laying back and doing exactly what I did in the wake of the Nintendo DS announcement: wait for something to impress me. I don't need this thing right now, so I could care less about the splashing going on with the press and the community at the moment. Everything's so polarized to be absolutely negative or unrealistically positive. If I see five or so titles that look like my style, I'll snatch it up. If not? no skin off my back.

The funny thing about saying it "isn't just a tech demo" is that the statement hides the fact that it wasn't even a tech demo. Aside from the reflection in the water/cause ripples with your hand thing, there was no tech demo there. It was just a computer character reciting lines from a script and then waiting the necessary number of seconds for the actress to read her lines. They were no communicating, Milo was not reacting to her vocal cues, he didn't even "scan" the picture she drew.

What they released as Kinect was a total disappointment after seeing the Natal demos. I think Microsoft has figured this out and doesn't want people thinking that the Milo "tech demo" will never be realized. That's probably why there was some confusion as to whether it was going to be an actual "game" or not.
