Microsoft officially increases XBLA size limit photo

We knew the previous 50MB limit was being broken with Castlevania, but now Microsoft has made it official: Every game on XBLA can go up to 150MB. From GamesIndustry:

The size limit for games distributed using Microsoft's popular Xbox Live Arcade service is to be tripled to 150MB, effective immediately - with the firm launching a new 512MB memory unit for the Xbox 360 to allow Core System owners to take advantage of the new games.

Previously, all software distributed on Xbox Live Arcade had to fit inside a 50MB file - which also meant that all software was compatible with the Xbox 360 Core System, which uses 64MB memory cards for data storage rather than the much larger hard drive in the "full" Xbox 360 system.

Now developers will be free to develop games up to a size limit of 150MB - a size which hits a sweet spot between giving flexibility to developers and maintaining accessibility for consumers, according to Xbox Live Arcade product manager Chris Early.

This is a very good thing, people. Some of us have always felt that the 50MB limit was too restrictive for XBLA -- limiting features and quality, etc. If they're increasing the size of XBLA now, though, what do you suppose they'll increase next? Hmmmm ... we keep secrets.

Oh, and by the way, I guess Luke was a bit off

I bet they're making the console itself bigger... And the controllers. Cause that worked out well last time. When do the major announcement coming?

My wife knows about the hard drive. The question is when. I'm on a need to know basis and I need to know.

I could have sworn they officially announced that this would be happening a month ago or so.

I'm pretty sure they did announce a new memory card. Summa should write an article about it.

Oh, wait...

is it only XBLA thats capped?
those HD video d/l's have to be larger than 650M.
whats up with the selective capping?

ms could make a lot of people very happy by re-releasing origonal XB titles online.

Yeah, but they're not going to do that since you can buy original XBOX games in, you know, stores.

Are you people nuts? The very article you're commenting on very clearly states that there's a new, larger memory unit.

For real.

Yeah, but you can't play most of those games on, you know, your 360.

I guess this is also paving the path towards perhaps 120gig pro/premium 360 and a core with only 20 gig

Making XBOX games downloadable isn't going to make them any more compatible than they are on DVD. Are they updating backward compatibility anymore?

@Nick: I was confused by people even asking the question - Figured I should look it up elsewhere since it hadn't been posted. Oops.

I'm just screwing with you guys. I usually don't read Summa's posts either. I call him up and I make him read it to me because I love the sound of his voice.

I don't know why the 50 MB limit wasn't simply restricted to the _demo_, the whole point of the limit was so you could put the game on a memory card and bring it to your friend's house and let him play it. Of course, unless your friend bought the game as well, he'd be playing the demo version. And if he had bought it, he wouldn't need your copy in the first place. How much better Lumines Live! could have been if the filesize cap had been raised so many months ago. I heard the upcoming Worms game had a few weapons cut, possibly due to the filesize limit.

I'm pretty sure Symphony of the Night met the old file size limit requirements. At least according to Konami a few months ago.

I thought Symphony was going to be the first XBL title to break the size limit, MS was making an exception for it. Anyway, this is good news that never would have been an issue if not for the misguided multiple skus. Two versions of the same console = bad idea.

Now I might think about picking up a portable memory unit. 64 MB was way too small.

As long as people posting above understand MS game demo's are often 900mb to 1.5Gigs downloads and the difference between those and MS Live Arcade Downloads noted ( here in this article ) at 150 mb limited.

The Arcade style games ( 150 mb or less ) are complete games that are simple "old school" arcade style that are fun, often quick paced and dont have complex graphics.. Like pac man.. a few slow ones like uno.. things like that. Game demo's and video's are much larger.
