The very first Microsoft store opened today in Scottsdale, Arizona. I ran over to check it out and we'll have more on that a little later today, but there's one story that I'm sure will interest all of the 360 owners out there who have ever had an issue with console failure (i.e. most of us). MS is taking some of the hurt out of the repairs process by allowing for in-store repair service.
Microsoft stores will be equipped to handle some basic repair tasks. All you have to do is walk in the store with your console, drop it off at the Answers Desk and a Microsoft Store employee will then diagnose the issue that you're having. If it's something simple -- such as a faulty power supply causing the Red Ring of Death -- they'll rectify the situation immediately.
If it has to be shipped out, however, things are just about as awesome. Once the store has received your console, the main distribution center is notified and a replacement unit can be sent right away.
Yeah, it's only any good if there's a Microsoft Store in your area, but it's exactly the way this sort of thing should be handled. I really have to give them credit for this one. Come back a little later for a closer look at the Microsoft Store.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
And who says they don't? It's a god damn Microsoft store, they'll have Xboxes.
Yeah! And they should hand out lollipops, too!
[And WTF is happening to the editor avatars! First a monocleless Jim now a hatless Conrad! When will it end! D=]
Hope they still give the free 1 month live card "for your time." They should give free games to you for their break-prone system.
This is called Rapid Exchange. At Geek Squad, we do this all the time for Xboxes under Best Buy Warranties, as well as iPhones and a select few other products, the idea is that it will be checked at the distribution center quickly to guarantee that nothing intentional has been done (i.e. opneing it up, etc).
This is definitely a boon to those who live close, especially if they do while you wait repairs (which I doubt, but even a couple days would be great). I just wonder if they'll do out of warranty work, and what they'd charge (probably a lot). Speaking as someone who fixed his own out of warranty RRoD, it was cheap, but if they make it a good deal, I'd do it with them in the future instead, for some sort of warranty on the fix.
Oh, too bad I live in mexico, we'll NEVER get a ms store...
But what's the point of an ms store....?
That's probably because this problem shouldn't exist anymore.
Anyway this is a good idea its just a shame MS stores are so few and far between.
Finally AZ can have something of some importance in the gaming world!
dont call it rapid exchange. I waited a month to get my xbox 360 back. My friend who had the same problem is now going on week 3. During the time I was without my xbox i went back to my pc and i dont think im going back to the console.
I wanted to ask why stupid people are incapable of thinking for themselves but then realsied that if you could understand the concept of a STORE you wouldn't be so stupid. Do you really need it explicitly stated in the article that a Microsoft store would sell Microsoft products? Then again, they might get confused and just load up on PS3s or something, I seem to be giving too much credit to people right now.
I got my 360 back in less than 2 weeks. maybe you gave yours back during their busy season.
You mean besides having 1 of only 15 GameWorks in the entire country?
I have a weird feeling that of all the places in the DFW area, Plano probably ranks kinda low on the "where to place a MS Store" scale.
Not that I hate Plano (well I do a little), but I have a feeling they're going to put first couple in one of the 8 gajillion malls.
Nice to see Microsoft not totally ripping an idea off of anyone else, especially when it comes to their little retail store. Oh, wait...I just puked, hold on.
Don't know why you guys do it to yourself.
What with all the sick exclusives, free, comparable online service, yada yada yada yada, blu-ray included, not an expensive extra etc etc, just sell that 360 and buy a PS3. You don't have to worry about shit like sending it back and getting it repaired and shit. Sure there's the 1 in 1000 that fails, but from experience, Sony are very good about it and generally fix it for free. But the fact that it's so unlikely to happen to you makes it a non-issue.
Next time it inevitably dies, I better get a replacement.
Get a ps3!
And it may last 3 months , so now if you pay them they will
fix it right ?? ya right , if they knew how to fix them
they wouldn't have had to spend a 1,000,000,000 $ for 2nd and
3rd reworks. save your money .40% of all 360 will not last, their not
durable. Trust me , the solder under under the G.P.U . is bad .
you can get some mileage out of them but you need special clamp/support
for the G.P.U. and the C.P.U .After the chip have been re-flowed
and the clamps put on you should get 9-12 months maybe more.
I repair 3-4 a day
