Microsoft no longer sending out coffins for defective 360s photo

Joystiq is reporting that Microsoft will no longer provide prepaid boxes to people that suffer defective Xbox 360s, including the Red Ring of Death plague. The new policy went into effect on May 26 "in an effort to expedite the repair process." Customers will be able to receive an e-label that they can slap onto whatever box they use themselves.

They'll still cover the cost of shipping; you just have to find your own box to use. It's really annoying that we'll have to go out and spend our own money now for a box. Sure, they don't cost much, but it's the principle of the matter. We shouldn't even have to be going through this in the first place had the console actually been designed properly.

Pro tip: If you don't want to spend cash on a box, go to a major department store like Best Buy and ask if they have any spare boxes in the back. They're going to throw the box away anyway so you might as well use it to save some money. Plus, you'll be recycling and that's always a good thing!

This is actually sort of cool, while still having it's annoyance

The cool part is now you don't have to wait for that box anymore. The annoying part is now you need a box

And a printer with ink.

Actually, they've been doing this for ages, at least in the UK. I got red ringed sometime around Christmas and just got given a digital label to stick on whatever box I could find.

Does this mean that we are also responsible for the packing?
if so, you better pack those consoles tighter than a nuns coin purse - or else Microsoft can do the whole "Well you're responsible for the safety of the contests during travel" thing.

If anybody seriously thought they had to 'buy' a box, then pity them. Not to detract from what is a very serious flaw in an otherwise awesome addition to the games industry. MS are just lucky the the 360 is so fucking good that they got away with the American model of Beta testing the machines in public, as opposed to the more conservative Asian and European method of Beta testing in the labs no matter how much ground you will (and have) lost to your competitors.

As long as they're still covering the cost of postage, then the 'get your own box' idea is not exactly a ball-breaker.

Having sent away 3 already in the UK and about to send a forth (all but one were my friends who couldn't be bothered to send them away so sold me the console for 20 quid!) i ALWAYS had to provide a box. U can use a Cereal box u cut up and fold over the console btw they really don't care... so long as its not the old xbox box.

I had to read this a couple times to make sure you weren't be facetious. Plainly, I think it's a stupid thing to bitch about. Oh no, where to find a box! Oh, and while we're on it, let's take a jab at Microsoft for something they couldn't really help doing in the first place. Before the wave of 'fanboi' and 'M$ thrall' remarks come in, remember than it was nVidia who stopped making cards for the original Xbox, thus forcing Microsoft to stop producing the Xbox, and launch their 360 early, even if it had a design flaw.

The alternative to all this was having a period of time when Microsoft had absolutely no consoles on the market, which would have killed any momentum they'd gotten from the modestly successful Xbox. Given all this, I think Microsoft has been more than fair in their handling of the situation. They've paid billions to enact a three-year warranty, paying for shipping and all repairs for the problems they are aware of (Red Ring and E74). I think a tiny thing like finding your own box for shipping (WHICH THEY STILL PAY FOR) is a small concession to give in the face of their fairly unprecedented backward-bending.

Indeed, when I sent mine off last week the email said one of the options was that they would send out a box, so I called them up to find out that they don't do that anymore. It's like "Well take that option off the damn email then!". I was lucky that a I had an almost perfect sized box just lying around.

blah blah just blah blah throw blah blah it blah blah blah away blah and blah blah get blah a blah blah blah PS3 blah blah blah.

No shit, when my PS3's BR drive died (2 years old, well out of warrantee) Sony were really apologetic, sent a courier to pick it up from my work (I keep boxes for consoles and stuff) and couriered it back with a new BR drive and even fixed the noisy fan that I stuck a note on the console about, in around 5 days.

Now that's what I'm talking about. That's just how it works when it's a rare problem, rather than such a common problem that they need to set up a special fucking system to deal with! They made/bought special boxes for fuck sake! Shit.

The console shouldn't have been released in the first place. In fact, if 99% of the people weren't so ignorant and read microsoft's entirely villainous history, the company wouldn't even exist anymore. It's amazing with what they can get away.

ignorance is bliss I guess.

@Ironik, Funny that it's always been that way in Germany given that the service centre is based there.

When mine broke the second time (heh), they sent me a box to the UK, and the UPS douchebag commented that "he'd never buy one cos he's seen too many go back" (which is incidentally what another said 2 years earlier when my third gen iPod pissed itself and died). It came back in the same box and I thought to myself "I'll keep that, cos it'll be really useful when it dies next time". Can I find it now? Not a chance, so here's hoping I don't RROD anytime soon.

Mind you, haven't touched my 360 in about 2 weeks now. Damn you Fable 2 and your utter boringness!

I sort-of got a box from MS to send my 360 in when it red-ringed. I just used the same box they'd sent the machine out to me in from the last time I had to get it repaired (or in this case, replaced), eight days previously

Never had a box in the UK. They've offered, but I declined, saying I'd just pack it myself. Get the shipping label in a email that is supposed to take 24 - 48 hours, and I got it immediately. Took 5 days to get delivered back to me, new motherboard and all.

Hilariously enough, the UPS guy had to pick up 4 xboxes on that one trip. Guess it was the time of year.

When I RMA'd my RROD, I sent it back in the Original box, as I could give a shit less about keeping it. I took my pre-paid label to UPS, and they said they had to pack it inside another box so it was secure for shipping.

I enjoyed the subtle humor that the stock box was not secure enough to ship in the mail. If the issue was just that the box said Xbox on the outside, that could be remedied by wrapping the package in brown paper bags (not like UPS people would ever tell you that).

FYI - I RMA'd the first RROD of our house (2x 360s @ home) on 3/25. No word of a coffin for me, just the pre-paid labels.

@Necrozen
Its more likely that Jack thompson will get a clue than MS will permanantly fix this, especially because people still bought the thing even when the failure rate was sky high(what do I mean when, it still is) and as long as people keep buying the defective product, why bother wastin money fixing it.

It's easy to find a box from any store or in your garage. Stick it in, send it off. They send it back in a nifty box with foam packaging that your console fits into which you can reuse.

I'd have trouble finding a box that big and would have to buy lots of bubble wrap specially too. Guess it's not that much trouble for a 'one off' occurance but it would take several days, or a devoted day off and that's a heavy cost just in your free time. It doesn't mention if you have to shlep the heavy thing to a post office either.

My understanding is that this policy has been in effect for some time. I know of two people in the last few months who printed a shipping label from the Microsoft site and sent their 360 in their own box.

As for buying a box, doesn't anyone save shipping boxes? I've still got the box that my repaired 360 came back to me in. If I need to send it in again I'll just pull it off the shelf in the garage and reuse it. Probably an effect of our 'disposable' society.

Microsoft are so greedy but I guess I couldn't blame them since Microsoft lost $7 Billion dollars.
I would feel sorry for those who don't have a warranty.
Hope my 360 doesn't break but luckily I have a PS3.
Best of both worlds.
Lucky for me I buy most of my games on PS3 so no worries.

I think this story is incorrect, because I just recently had to send my XBox in for repairs and they sent me all of the packaging for me to send it in. It was after May 26 as well, so that's even more reason for me to think this story is false.

This is old news, it has been the case for repairs I've taken care of for friends for over a year. Just like that dratted foal SexualChocolate suggests, I simply use the box the last repair was delivered in.

And all my PS3 owning friends have had to have full console replacements when they've had issues, losing all their saves etc. One had to wait for a fucking month because Sony only make shitty PS3s now, and he wanted his shiny 60GB SKU.

sent mine back recently - they offered to send me a box, or to let me print my own label. I chose the label as it was quicker.

@ChaosTeaCup "How comes you can't use the old xbox 'box'?"
You can - but you won't get it back. They mention that in their repair readme/FAQ/whatever. So, if you want to keep your retail box, don't use it to ship back the system to the repair center.

I thought this was true, but the reality is that they now give you 3 choices when going through the repair process. You can print out an e-label, have them ship you just a label, or have them ship you a pre-labelled box. I just got my box a few days ago and just had to put my 360 inside and drop it off at a UPS Store- it couldn't have been easier.

Last I read it was because the graphics processor sits right under the drive motor and doesn't have a dedicated heatsink, so eventually the connectors expand from heat and the chip just pops off the board.

Maybe wikipedia has a more correct answer, I dunno.

Uh...When I sent in my 360 last december here in New York, I was told that they no longer sent out boxes and that they had instituted the policy only days beforehand. I was irritated, but since I was sending it in for repair, I figured I could send a crappy box with no padding and they'd have to repair it anyway. Which they did and it shipped back in a new box. My question is- did microsoft just lie to me, or has anyone else in the US in the last 6 months been fed this line?
