Microsoft: Multiplatform games are 'better' on Xbox 360 photo

Humility? Microsoft does not understand the meaning of the word. The Xbox 360 platform holder, by way of European executive Chris Lewis, has stated that multiplatform games "just work better" on the 360 thanks to Xbox Live. Microsoft said it, so it has to be true!

"We have a great journey through to Christmas," boasts Lewis. "There are key titles that are exclusives but also great cross-platform titles that will just work better on Xbox Live. And in terms of content and networking, we have more content partnerships for Xbox Live."

There's no doubt that Xbox Live is the more robust online platform, but of course the hardware itself has to work in the first place for the games to work better on it. Also, it's certainly not true that Xbox Live makes all games superior, especially if online play isn't that big of a deal. Anybody who tells me that Batman: Arkham Asylum is better on the Xbox 360 can no longer be counted as an intelligent human being.

What do you reckon though? Are multiplatform titles always better on Xbox Live, or is the PS3 the superior system for third party gaming?

I hate the current-gen DLC console wars so much.

There's a reason most people get their multiplats for X360 if they own both systems, however, expect some sole PS3 owners (especially obvious fanboys) to say the opposite.

Maybe true for live, but I mostly play single player, so both games are the same to me. It boils down to who has the exclusive DLC and stuff.

FF11 played great on the xbox for Silver users, but the way how XBL now wants to Gold charge people already paying for a monthly subscription it is what killing their MMO fanbase.

Look whats happening with Aion/FFXIV.

Hahaha! Okay Microsoft.

If we're talking "fair" cross platform titles (meaning no exclusives on either side) PS3 wins. Once either side starts getting exclusive shit then it's debatable whether it's even truly multiplatform.

The worst is GTA IV and the DLC thing. That was such a dick move. So is RBN but I hear that Sony is the one barracading that.

Neither is superior. I love my PS3 but to be honest Prototype as well as being a horrible game also had horrible grafix on the PS3. I couldn't stand it. On the contrary it looked better on the 360. Dosen't change the fact it was a bad game (a game with little story).

In terms of quality I'm going to tip my hat more towards the xbox 360 when you look at games like Bioshock. Then again, I played Bioshock on the PC and that was waaaaaay better. The Batman game though recently won my buy for the PS3 mostly for the Joker content.

Curse the whole DLC format anyway. Micro transactions and DLC is what is in now just to get that extra little buck out of content that mostly should have been in the game in the first place. I'm looking at you Soul Calibur 4.

Yeah really, I haven't picked up Batman yet, as I'm not really sure what system to get it on. I have a 360 and PC, and PS3 purchase is on the horizon. Is it really "better" on PS3? Or is that just because of the Joker content? Right now I'm leaning towards the PC version (barring any ridiculous install limits or something), due to the phys-x enhancements. I was also kinda hoping the scene would hack that Joker content into the PC version in the future if it's not officially released. But maybe I'll just wait and get the PS3 version...

So whats the word guys? Other than the Joker challenge rooms, does anyone have a substantive breakdown of the differences between versions?

Also, I find it funny how now that the PS3 is coming out with piles of AAA exclusives all M$ can fall back on is games that are playable on BOTH platforms.

I will say, each company can simply say that their console is a lot more superior when it comes to the performance of the games, but on a more logical approach, I do feel that the PS3 can handle things a lot better than it's rival the 360. I will admit, the 360 does have some pretty interesting games and they are very enjoyable, but performance wise, eh, I would have to give it to the PS3 stating that it's basically more high advance computer.

If anything, the 360 is also very good for DLC.

I expected him to say they work better becuase of the large amount of games developed in the past that apparently did run better on the 360 than the PS3.

Orange Box comes to mind.

But because this problem has more or less ceased to be, saying it's better because of (and only because of) Live is a bit chuckle-worthy. Granted, I've never even had the pleasure of touching a PS3 controller, but I have a 360 and Live doesn't seem that hot.

360: Achievements

PS3: Joker DLC (Eidos has said that Sony locked it up for LIFE)

PC: Better graphics, a more diverse control array (you can use a 360 controller, PS3 controller, PS2 controller, N64, etc), the ability to hook your PC up to your TV with an HDMI input for even better looking graphics, and possible community created content. You also have the added bonus of knowing Microsoft is very harsh in terms of charging for DLC, and down the line, you may get some free challenge rooms as a PC owner, and the Live users will have to pay $1-5 for them.

I think the choice is obvious, unless you really enjoy The Joker. I have it on 360 because I had to review it early, so I can't comment on how good the Joker DLC is.

Well considering my 360 isn't online, the 360 versions must suck because they have no online functionality whatsoever.

Opinions MS, learn to tell them from facts, while the piece above is my opinion I will never say it was a fact because different people have different experiences.

I think the proof is in the pudding. I buy the vast majority of multi-plat titles on the 360 for reasons ranging from better visuals/performance to something as simple as being able to chat with a larger group of friends while I play single player. I'm not saying this is universal, and I wish the press release would have conceded that point.

I would rather this have gone unsaid. Corporate gloating is rubbish, and its even worse when I feel compelled to defend the substance of corporate gloating. I'm now part of the machine. Thank you, Microsoft and Jim Sterling.

Here's my rules for Multiplatform games.

IF it's coming out for either PS3 and 360.

First I consider a few things.

1.) Does it have online multiplayer?
If so. I take into consideration. Who else is going to get this game? Otherwise I get it for the 360, because I prefer Xbox live's interface, and more of my friends have 360s. That and more people use microphones. And the game zones.

2.) Is it a fighting game.

Unless it resembles something of a dreamcast game that used triggers. This goes for PS3.

3.) If it is Single player, or The multiplayer element is more of an after thought. I usually get it for PS3, Unless they can't get the game to run at full resolution.

4.) if it's multiplatform including the wii. I ignore that it exists. I don't want to have to waggle when I don't have to. That and they don't even bother making the game look good whatso ever. I mean the thing is more powerful than a gamecube, yet I've seen Gamecube games look freaking gorgeous in comparison. AND you have bigger discs?! WTF get some decent textures in there. I wouldn't mind some AA in there as well. Take more than six months in a development cycle jesus.

Unless it's Resident Evil 4. Then it's badass.

I buy all my action games on PS3 for the controller and convenience of having an entire series playable on one platform. Since I have a software-BC PS3, I like being able to play every DMC game on one system.

If games are heavy on multiplayer, or if they're significantly better performing on the 360, then I'll choose that version of the game.

I'm pretty sure the quality of a game across multiple platforms has nothing to do with the hardware, or microsoft or sony for that matter. Wouldn't it just be the system prioritized by the 3rd-party developer that'd run the game better? Sadly, the 360 versions are usually a little bit more polished because the game would be designed for the Xbox and then ported to the PS3, or similar shenanigans. It's really irritating, actually–both systems have unique advantages, so the games should hypothetically look equally good, just in different ways. But no.

Of course, since most games allow you to use a 360 controller in their PC edition, the PC stomps on everything. 720p upscaled with no AA can go fuck itself. I'm looking at you, every console game >(

I just recently played Bioshock on the PC, and it was like playing a totally upgraded remake a la Excape from Butcher Bay. I have no intention of touching Batman on a console.

But most of my friends just have 360, and there online thing is better for me, even though we have to pay for it...

Achievements are better than trophies according to Jim, and he was pretty correct about it.

If I had both systems, I would probably get multiplayer games on PS3 because most people I know in person and play online games often have PS3s. For everything else I would stick with the 360 because I prefer the controller.

Actually this is probably true. Being a tech guy I can see how this would be true. Frankly when you have hardware/software you are already familiar with you tend to be more easily able to adapt everything from your usually computer based programs to handle the transition. This is why you don't see a lot of Linux/Mac games and why windows is supreme in the PC world. There's certain ways to circumvent this issue for Linux but your never going to get the equal raw power of playing it off of Windows.

It's a simple language issue, PC/Xbox speaks english. PS3 is moonspeak, maybe it's prettier? Maybe it has the power of Messiah to shatter skulls. We will never know because when you transition to something like English from a foreign language you lose all the nuances that make that language unique, such as certain phases (SPUs) certain quirks (like GPU to CPU shading).

I don't know if that helped or made you retarded...

Depends on the game. Fighting games suck on the 360 due to it's controller. That's not even debatable. Graphics shouldn't even be a factor in how good the game is. It's not like games that look better on the 360 BLOW AWAY the PS3 version. Really they aren't better on the 360, they just look a bit nicer. I think it's funny how they can say that LIVE makes multiplatform games better. Look at the Fallout 3 DLC problems. Charging 360 owners for Mass Effect DLC that PC owners get for free. Saying LIVE makes multiplatform games better is like saying salt and pepper makes a rye sandwich fuckin amazing.

Do you actually believe that multiplatform games (regardless of DLC) mostly LOOK better on the PS3?

If you do, then you're a blind fanboy.

The only reason I can think of that you'd say PS3 "wins" in this situation is because of the controller.

And I'm not saying PS3 is worse (it's the only current gen console I own), but it's stupid to say their multiplatform games are better since 90% of the time the 360 version has better graphics.

Now, before you all jump down my throat, I'm not saying this is because the PS3 isn't as powerful or anything like that. It's because PS3 development is harder and more time consuming than 360 development causing many studios to cut corners a bit.

So yes, by and large, taking into account all of the factors, the 360 versions of most multiplatform games are better than the PS3 versions.

I'm not afraid to admit it, and the graphical differences are almost always minimal at best, but to deny it, to me, makes no sense at all.

Arkham Asylum notwithstanding, I buy all multiplatforms games on the 360 as opposed to the PS3. It's not even necessarily that the games play better, it's just that the community is stronger, I have a more populated friend list, and I can easily jump from game to game if somebody wants to play with me on the 360.

the reason for this is that the xbox is a cheaper console which really means lower quality games so if they tried to to use use ps3 exclusive like killzone 2 if they ported it and left it how it is the xbox couldnt handle handle killzones graphical and technical excelance so developers make the the cheapest as lead console this is the reason y . and i am nt FANBOI I REPEAT NT A FANBOI.

yes having a strong community is good but that doesn't make the game itself better. PLaying online on the 360 is like playing online on the PS3, friends or not. Besides the community on the PS3 is just as strong. This may be de to the fact that here in Canada there are only 300 000 more 360's to PS3s as opposed to 2 million more 360s and PS3's in the states.

Well, he's kind of right, most multi-plat games do seem to run better on the 360. But who cares, everyone has their system/controller preference and the differences between versions are (usually) minute enough that it isn't worth debating.

Everyone seems to be passing over the fact that he's talking specifically about his confidence for the games that are coming out the end of this year. He has a point, it's going to be an awesome Q3/4 of 2009 for us gamers.

The multi-platform titles he's talking about are probably Borderlands, Assassin's Creed 2, Bayonetta, CoD:MW2, Brutal Legend, and more that I have less interest in. I'm curious to see if those few bits about XBL was just corporate swagger-speak [probably] or hinting at exclusive content for XBL? One can hope.

Yes, but it's been proven that with select games (COD 4, WAW), there are more games available on the 360 at a time, which is part of what Dexter is saying.

My friend down the street has COD 4 on the PS3, I have it on the 360. We compared games available worldwide after logging in, and found that the 360 trumps it every day we check. The FPS scene is simply stronger on the 360 when it comes to multiplatform games.

its fuct up when the original xbox came out the developers were purposely make their games look better on it but now they don't want to favor one system in general because of backlash but that creates even more backlash because they aren't taking advantage of each systems specifics advantages. its bullshit and should not be happening. dumbing down one console to make it even with the other console is a shit practice and needs to stop.
