When Xbox Live Arcade was first conceived, games had to stick to a strict file size limit of 50 MB, a size deemed impractical when large titles like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night made their appearance on the service. MS upped the size cap to 150 MB, a limit that has served the platform well up until now, with Capcom's hefty offerings on the horizon. In response, The 'Soft has now increased the size limit to 350 MB, more than double the previous cap.
Capcom had recently shared concerns over the 150 MB limit when Super Street Fighter Turbo HD Remix Alpha Super Pow Wow Mega XXX Hong Kong Phooey Planes Trains & Automobiles Jim Henson's The Labyrinth was facing problems meeting the restriction. While many claim that the previous low size caps "encouraged innovation," developers will surely rejoice at having more space to play with. Good news for them, bad news for our hard drives.
"We've been listening to our partners, listening to our customers to try and get a feel for what's right," stated Xbox Live portfolio manager David Edery. "We don't want the size limit to hit the roof because we think there's some value in promoting small pick and play experiences that don't cost $20 million, it's good for the ecosystem."
This is generally a smart move for Microsoft, especially with Nintendo's WiiWare generating a lot of buzz. We'll see if it helps keep the XBLA service on top when the big guns come out later this year.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Wonder how long it would take before they rid of the whole thing all together?
I would far from call $180 cheap. That's more than half the cost of the console itself, which comes with the 20Gig hard drive.
I wonder what the chances are for Final Fight arcade making it to XBLA. I want more retro stuff, and I'm willing to pay for it instead of emulate it. Come on! Take my money!
@AlarmedMidget
You use the horribly unoriginal and juvenile "M$," yet you have the 360 logo in your blog header. Were you going for irony there?
Classic, and frikin' hilariously true!
XBLA game prices =
400
800
1200
1600
2400
3200
etc. They finna start jackin up da prices.
also, this is great news!
I mean, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD: Electric Boogaloo Edition is HARDLY innovative or creative. It's an almost 15 year old game for crying out loud. All they're doing is prettying up the graphics and it still can't even hit the old size limits.
Microsoft, if you want HD games on Live, you need the space to PUT them on live. Suck it up and actually make your proprietary Hard Drives affordable.
also the hd is bs Microsoft. Fix the pricing.
Yes, I always wanted to pay $75 for a 1gig memory card instead of $6. Just like I always wanted to pay $180 for a 120GB HDD instead of a lot less for a much higher capacity HDD.
