Microsoft more than doubles size limit for XBLA games photo

When Xbox Live Arcade was first conceived, games had to stick to a strict file size limit of 50 MB, a size deemed impractical when large titles like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night made their appearance on the service. MS upped the size cap to 150 MB, a limit that has served the platform well up until now, with Capcom's hefty offerings on the horizon. In response, The 'Soft has now increased the size limit to 350 MB, more than double the previous cap.

Capcom had recently shared concerns over the 150 MB limit when Super Street Fighter Turbo HD Remix Alpha Super Pow Wow Mega XXX Hong Kong Phooey Planes Trains & Automobiles Jim Henson's The Labyrinth was facing problems meeting the restriction. While many claim that the previous low size caps "encouraged innovation," developers will surely rejoice at having more space to play with. Good news for them, bad news for our hard drives.

"We've been listening to our partners, listening to our customers to try and get a feel for what's right," stated Xbox Live portfolio manager David Edery. "We don't want the size limit to hit the roof because we think there's some value in promoting small pick and play experiences that don't cost $20 million, it's good for the ecosystem."

This is generally a smart move for Microsoft, especially with Nintendo's WiiWare generating a lot of buzz. We'll see if it helps keep the XBLA service on top when the big guns come out later this year.

Thank God, what the live arcade needs is some more leg room to fit content in

Now the next boring card game can have super-high-resolution graphics!

Agreed. I have nearly 60 XBLA games and there's still plenty of room on my HDD to spare. Screw the people who are too cheap to buy a hard drive.

This is awesome news. I hope this doesn't mean The Behemoth is gonna go back and add new content to Castle Crashers, though, before releasing it. GIVE ME THAT SHIT NOW!

Great news...

Wonder how long it would take before they rid of the whole thing all together?

Thank God!! Glad to see they're willing to cave on the size limit when it's most definitely in their benefit.

I would far from call $180 cheap. That's more than half the cost of the console itself, which comes with the 20Gig hard drive.

Now if only there was a way to install a 250GB HDD, or anything larger than M$ has available now.

This is good news. It was only a matter of time (and profit) if you ask me.

They should just make it unlimited or at least high enough that only the biggest XBLA games would hit it.

God damn, I really want that Super Street Fighter II game to come out. Is there any way that it'll cost more than 800 MSpoints, since they're putting so much work into it? I really hope not.

I wonder what the chances are for Final Fight arcade making it to XBLA. I want more retro stuff, and I'm willing to pay for it instead of emulate it. Come on! Take my money!

@AlarmedMidget

You use the horribly unoriginal and juvenile "M$," yet you have the 360 logo in your blog header. Were you going for irony there?

Great news, however I'm not sure why they didn't just bump it up to the real number they should target - 650mb.

Size limits may somewhat encourage creativity but they definitely DISCOURAGE use of HD graphics in many cases.

I mean, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD: Electric Boogaloo Edition is HARDLY innovative or creative. It's an almost 15 year old game for crying out loud. All they're doing is prettying up the graphics and it still can't even hit the old size limits.

Microsoft, if you want HD games on Live, you need the space to PUT them on live. Suck it up and actually make your proprietary Hard Drives affordable.

Saying that limitations force innovation is a complete copout. If that were the case then the Wii would have an amazing library.

I think this whole thing is an argument in a nutshell of why Bluray > DVD. Have fun getting screwed by those HD costs. 120GBs for how much geez, what is this the 90s.

I'm still confused why there hasn't been any dvd releases of the arcade titles. I'd think that putting 5 800point games together for like $40 would be brilliant. That way it takes up no room on the HD except for save space.

also the hd is bs Microsoft. Fix the pricing.

At first glance, I thought you were saying they were making a Jim Henson's Labyrinth game. Who wouldn't want to see David Bowie cosplaying as Tina Turner and his high resolution junk?

Yes, I always wanted to pay $75 for a 1gig memory card instead of $6. Just like I always wanted to pay $180 for a 120GB HDD instead of a lot less for a much higher capacity HDD.
