Microsoft memo reveals '08 releases photo

An internal memo from Microsoft games chief Don Mattrick (graciously reprinted in full by Dean Takahashi) reveals some interesting (and not so interesting if you're not into number crunching) tidbits regarding Microsoft exclusive releases in '08 as well as projections for the sales performance of the system in the coming year.

While the majority of the discourse throughout the memo is simply corporate glad-handing and peptalkery, one paragraph in particular casts an interestingly speculative light:

In 2008 the hits will continue to come with exclusives including “Halo Wars,” “Too Human,” “Fable 2,” Alan Wake,” “Splinter Cell: Conviction,” and several exciting yet-to-be-announced titles.  Xbox 360 will be home to the next versions of great franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Resident Evil, and we will continue to be the leading choice for sports fans, with the next editions of Madden and FIFA looking and playing better on our platform.

While the release of Halo Wars, Fable 2, Grand Theft Auto IV, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell: Conviction, and Too Human in 2008 were to be expected, Resident Evil 5 (which, while not specifically mentioned is likely the Resident Evil to which the memo refers) was widely thought to be coming out in 2009. Notably missing is any mention of Ninja Gaiden 2, which could mean nothing or could indicate a delayed release.

Mattrick goes on to note that by the end of 2008 the Xbox 360 will be "the leader of this generation of consoles" (or so he believes). Mattrick appears to have reached his conclusion via the trend of previous top dogs producing the most third party revenue; an example the Xbox 360 has followed though whether that trend will continue in these heady days of (supposedly) skyrocketing Wii sales remains to be seen.

[Thanks, Jonathan]

Oh crap......
I can't believe I forgot about Fable 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, and Resident Evil 5 coming out this year.
I've been playing so many great games lately that I've forgotten about the future. That's awesome.

"Xbox 360 will be home to the next versions of great franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Resident Evil..."

I don't think he was saying that RE5 is going to come out in 2008, merely that its going to be released on the X360. I'd be ecstatic if RE5 really is coming out this year though.

@Rainbowblack: I lol'ed at your post, not in a bad way but a good way. I think I'm the only one looking forward at all to Too Human.

As far as the news article, uh... gosh, wonder if that was intended to be leaked? Oh, right, it was an internal memo *wink wink nod nod*

I loves me some GTA, can't wait for IV to come out. I know a lot of you are sick of it but I'm a gta junkie; I purchased two ps2s to play Vice City and San Andreas respectively.

I must be the only other person looking forward to Too Human. We should start a club, with t-shirts and such.

Yeah, I'll agree with Yumplumbum (even though I have no idea what a Yumplumbum is) and say that only the first sentence is necessarily stuff they have a firm 2008 release for. The second sentence is too waffly for comfort, and I'd be surprised if they had been promised that both GTA IV and RE5 will launch in 08.

There's an "Edition" subtext, there can still be MGS4:GOTP edition exclusive to each. Why would there be a sub-sub-title in there anyways?

It seems likely that a part of any hypothetical contract Konami would make with Microsoft would include not mentioning MGS4 for 360 until after the PS3 exclusivity ends.

Hypothetically. In theory. Did you really think it would be listed here?

Since when was RE5 expected in '09? It's always been an '08 title to my knowledge. At worst I could see it be an early January '09 title just like RE4 was in 2005.

@AgentMOO: That's not a sub-sub title, it says "Tactical Espionage Action" like previous MGS games.

Do not feed the trolls. Seriously, if anyone wants to trumpet Sony or MS or Nintendo, take a knife and shove it into your skull. Or shut the fuck up. I am getting extremely fed up with you assholes.

That's a good line-up. I look forward to Fable, Splinter Cell, and Halo Wars. I'm also interested in seeing if Too Human is as good as its developers have been boasting. And we aren't likely to be seeing MGS until at least 2009. I would think that'd be obvious to those who've been paying attention.

It's nice to see Alan Wake on an '08 release list. It's probably going to be pushed back along with Too Human until the Xbox 720 in 2012.

Let's just let everyone have their own systems and games and see which one fails first. Then you can start up the fanboy crap.

Looks like a good year for Microsoft. I don't own one myself (I have a Wii myself, I should try to get one sometime) but I've played the predecessors of most of these games (well, the ones with predecessors) and I was fairly intrested in them, especially GTA. GTA IV, is going to be tough competition for other games to get Game of the Year.
