Microsoft making NXE a mandatory install photo

Don't like the New Xbox Experience? Tough. Microsoft will be making the NXE mandatory for every Xbox 360 user, even those who don't have their console connected to Xbox Live. Taking a page from the PSP handbook of annoyance, firmware updates will ship with retail discs, forcing an installation of the NXE before the game can be played.

The original blade dashboard will henceforth be wiped from the face of the planet like some vile stain, starting with the release of HAWX this Friday, along with MLB: 2K9

While I don't think this is especially outrageous or anything, it's interesting that Microsoft wants to make sure the original dashboard is completely eradicated. Maybe they're hoping the allure of the NXE will be enough to get unconnected users saddled with Xbox Live.

Whatever, so long as Microsoft doesn't start pulling the same bullsh*t that the PSP does with its ridiculously regular firmware updates, there's no reason to worry about it.

How can you do an NXE install if you only have an arcade unit with a 128MB memory card?

Sucks to be one of those owners of a modded 360 who haven't wanted to connect their console to install NXE..... hahahaha, suckers.

The install will most likely just be streamed from micro$haft and it'll just overwrite the blade dashboard code. It's not that big of an install really.

While I love Netflix and the installs, and some other things about the NXE, what I despise and hate with a burning passion is it turns your damn "game console" into an advertising machine.

When I turn it on I just want to get to the video or games I have on my hard drive that I own! But what do I get? Endless menus to flip through that offer me tons of shit Microsoft wants me to buy. It makes me sick that they integrate all the shit they want you to buy on your dashboard. I understand it's a buisness and blah blah and all that but, it's fucking obnoxious to the extreme.

@dvddesign

They had a 20 dollar harddrive sale for arcade owners awhile ago. While it isn't a real solution, Microsoft sure thought it was good enough.

Poor arcade owners.

i didn't like NXE when it came out and i don't like it now. 99% of the time i use the new blade menu, and the other 1% usually results in me not finding what i'm looking for.

i can understand why NXE is mandatory online, as i'm sure MS don't want to have to update two dashboards, but i have found no benefit to using it at all, and no game relies on its presence for any function, so forcing the update on offline players is just mean.

It makes sense to unify your user base experience, just even for the sake of providing proper support.

I've had little to no problems with PSP firware updates.

Sure, they're frequent, but the firware requirements on games (and most of them don't seem to have ANY) are usually SEVERAL updates behind the most recent one so you don't need to update every 5 seconds.

Also, PSP updates actually seem to add GOOD features that make me WANT to update occasionally, so I can't fault them for adding more functionality to my system.

I actually like the looks of the NXE,it reminds me of the XMB
it would have been so much better if they did without the advertisements and the avatar shit

The old dashboard wasn't the best, however it worked for what it was. My concern is that I hate for crap to load on the NXE. It takes forever even to see the games I own on the damn thing. At least with the old dashboard I never had to wait. Even though everything is streamlined now I feel as if it detracts from wanting to actually play a game cause now I have to wait for it to load all the time.

"... even for the sake of providing proper support."

You do realize that you are talking about Microsoft support, right? I hope you meant that as a joke because its the funniest thing I've read today!

This is more likely to combat modded consoles. Same reason sony puts mandatory psp updates on their games. But since custom firmware is around the mandatory psp updates are useless.

Oh boy, Dad isn't gonna like this at all. Arcade with a 256MB card, no Live and never will.

Granted, he never used the dashboard as it is, it still sounds like a pain.

The fact here is that if we don't all have to upgrade, everyone won't know about A Kingdom for Kelfings. Someone, please think of the Kelfings!!!

I've long ago come to terms with the NXE - love the features, think it's a bit cluttered, but it still works - but why are they forcing this on people who aren't connected? People who may have wanted that decision to keep the old dashboard and forgo Live? People who obviously won't use practically all the new features of NXE beyond avatars? It just seems spiteful, like Microsoft is appalled that people might get to make their own choices about the console they own. Which, if you think about it, is ironic, when they sell their console on user choice and customization.

It is best; so eveyone will be on the same page. It does not make sense for the ones who are not connected; why?

@drack

Buy a PS3 or Wii then. At least both of them had the good sense to keep advertising off of the XMB/Wii Channels

You know you guys could just NOT buy the content they offer.

But hey, MS, I keep forgetting they are evil incarnate and everyone likes to whine and moan about them. Someone hasn't used "they've ruined gaming" line someone use it fast.

@DVD: I have all three and enjoy them all. As I said, I like a lot of the functionality, it's just way to cluttered with things I don't own and it makes the value of things I do feel less substainal..if that makes sense?

So the NXE just became mandatory right around the time some devs start complaining about 360 hardware limitations. One of the additions is the optional ability to install games on the hard drive.

I'm kinda getting the feeling that optional Installs are about to become "encouraged" ( looks over at his 20 gb hardrive ) awwww crap.
