Microsoft loses $1.2 million in Microsoft Points photo

A site that generated 160 Microsoft Points per refresh has cost the Xbox 360 platform holder over $1.2 million in real-life cash. Unlike those bogus "fill out ten surveys for free points" sites, this one was genuinely giving away free Moon Bucks to anybody who stumbled upon it.

The site is now closed down, but not before one chap nabbed $150 worth of MS Points and tons of other crafty gamers ransacked what they could. Before the site's closure, it was giving out 404 errors due to mass traffic.

Cheeky hackers determined that you could add numbers to old Point codes in order to generate new ones. Not every generated code worked, but the plenty of them did. In addition to the site, more dedicated rogues could download a program that automatically generated codes for MS Points, Halo: Reach Avatar props, or 48-hour Xbox Live trials.

The freebie frenzy is over, but Microsoft's been hit pretty hard. I'm sure most of you, however, are simply kicking yourselves for missing out on it before MS shut down the party.

Microsoft lose $1.2 Million Due to Code Exploit [Save & Quit, thanks Adam!]

No lengthy rant on the moralities of this? No bashing of people on the basis of this being "stealing"?

I'm suprised Jim.

Question: Did they really lose 1.2 million if the money is imaginary? I suppose they lost 1.2 million potential dollars, but the money never existed really, did it?

@Astalano: But unlike Sony's hacking problems or priracy in general, this was just poor planning and could have easily been avoided.

I came across the website once, but thought the deal was too good to be true, so I left. Microsoft already gives me discounts on points card as part of their retail loyalty program. Doesn't feel right stealing from them.

I have a feeling that this activity is easily traceable. I mean, all Microsoft has to do is look for a bunch of idiots who redeemed a bunch of 160 MSP codes in sequence and commence with either revoking the points or banning the accounts.

@Fugly Duckling
You could look at it that way, but it's the same argument for piracy. Nothing was really stolen, but at the same time they lost sales, I guess.

It doesnt feel right? Do you realize how little $1.2 million is to a juggernaught like Microsoft? In the time it took to realize they'd been had and shut down the site, they likely generated that money with all the other things they do to generate money. Don't feel bad.
They won't miss it.

One thing that will suck is that all the people who buy cards that have those generated codes on them are not going to work.

And don't try to compare this to software and game piracy. Theres a difference. Software piracy takes a teams hard work and basically says "Oh, you guys did a bang up job on it, but since I'm not interested enough in the game that took your blood, sweat and tears rolled up on the time you could have spent with loved ones to pay for it, I'll pirate it and pretend I did nothing wrong."

Where as this situation is absolutely different. Microsoft points are a form of currency with an arbitrary conversion rate applied to it that basically fucks you and takes your money. I shed no tears over this "injustice" because no one watched their hard work passed around like a regular girl at a frat party.

@MacV Actually, unless I am mistaken, quite a lot was stolen and real money will be lost. Microsoft has to pay the developers when their games are downloaded. The developers are not at fault for the exploit and aren't going to give a crap why it happened. Microsoft is obligated to pay those developers for the games these users download.

And this is why companies think they can't trust us with anything. As soon as someone finds an exploit, they use it to rip people off. People that do this need to be excised from the gamer-whole so all of us don't have to be treated like thieves.

@Lycan XIII
And the next step should be to ban everyone that incessantly pre-trolls people.

I remember something sort of like this happening with a company (Netflix, I think) offering a free month of Xbox Live Gold for just entering an e-mail address, code, and captcha. Thing is, they didn't have limits in place to prevent people from entering fake e-mail addresses and since all the codes were unique and stacked, some people got like 5+ years of Xbox Live Gold for free.

I think if I even knew about this before hand I wouldn't have taken any points. Yeah its money that Microsoft probably won't really damage them too much but considering that this is money that was probably used on buying games from the arcade; that's now money that Microsoft now has to probably pay to all these developers out of their own pocket for people basically ripping them off.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Maybe it didn't come off like that. Despite no physical product being stolen, they still lost sales on the MS-points (cards or what-have-you) so yeah.

Saying this doesn't matter/isn't theft is like saying it wouldn't matter/wouldn't be theft if you found a way to make a coke machine spit out quarters on demand(and then showed others how to do it to the tune of 1.2m)

Once again, people confuse the concept of "media" and "content". Content is 95% of what you pay for.. media is cents on the dollar.

Ever since they added Microsoft Points to their BING toolbar (which, I only downloaded to get in on it), I have yet to spend "real cash" on Points. Seriously, it works; I've saved up enough to buy Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Lara Croft & TGL, and Castle Crashers.

And all for using their search engine.

Nothing really interests me of XBLA, so I don't really hate myself for not finding it. I bought the Xbox Slim and the game I bought it for: Halo Reach. After I was done with Reach's campaign, the Xbox went into the "not used until new exclusive arrives". I don't think Gears of War 3 will satisfy this demand, so here's hoping that they make Halo 5, or else I'll have waste the money in a system I hate.

It's not like Microsoft can turn to the creators of XBLA games and say, whoops those downloads are not legit, so we won't be paying you your cut. I think this is a definite loss for Microsoft, not just imaginary dollars being stolen.
