The meh men out there were quick to discount Kinect's tracking after they got their hands on (off?) Microsoft's motion sensing technology, saying that on screen it lagged behind your real world motions. Of course, Microsoft wants you to know that their tracking is tight and fast, and not laggy.
Kinect frontman Kudo Tsunoda told Xbox360Achievements that it's actually as fast as hitting a button on a controller:
"We've done tests back at the office where we have a TV, flash a light on the screen and we'll have a controller, and have someone there hitting a button, and someone with Kinect clapping as soon as they see the light on the screen, and both things go just as fast as one another."
That means we should expect 1:1 control when this all goes down in November. Don't take my word for it, though.
Tsunoda adds: "We already have the 1:1 stuff working really well and the response time is just as fast as pushing a button or making a gesture."
I'm sure they've done tests that are a bit more technical than clapping. I hope so, at least.
MS: Kinect capable of 1:1, fast as 'pushing a button' [CVG]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
The Move controller interests me only in so far as will it be as accurate as a FRAG FX type controller. If it's not more accurate and there is no benefit to using one in shooter games, it's still a no sale for regular gaming.
Sadly I'll put the money before that, so my fingers are crossed!
I'm pleased you did.
I just feel a combination of this being advanced tech and a lot of negative hype has really stopped people from seeing the potential kinect has.
I know it's fun to laugh at milo (and that douche from lionhead doesn't help) but I saw a promotional video for move recently and it looked no better than the pics of insanely smiley famines playing casual games.
That racing demo vid thay released a bit back showed that pushing your hands toward the screen makes you boost and I can see myself doing that by accident quite a lot. Also, imagine the way you mimic turning when an actual wheel ISN'T in your hands. You naturally lean your hands left and right from center. It's going to take a lot of concentration and rigid arm movements to keep arms perfectly out in front of you and turning on a rigid axis for this to work.
I just can't see any way that ANY of these games could be fun for more than 5-10 minutes. Turning gestures into screen movements requires the gestures to be explicitly defined and distinguishable from each other. Unlike the Wii, where you can fudge movements and make them smaller jukes so long as the accelerometer reads the juke, this thing has to recognize that you lowering your arms is an in-game action and not just you dropping your arms because it's complete bullshit to have to hold them out in front of you for more than 30 seconds.
Valid points bro but imagine how ripped your arms are going to be after a month!
..you again.. They said they had a controller to test it with.
It's brilliant. We got free online, a hot tub full of playboy/playgirl models and a map showing the precise location of a whole vault full of Jewish gold.
Ps3 is the best, my opinion, but universally accepted as fact!
And if you challenge me I'm gonna be all polite up in your face.
Yes, but that is what they say. The proof is in the pudding for us gamers. Unless any gamer has tried it out for themselves, its hard to believe what they say is truth right?
LOL. Do i sound like that? C'mon, i don't think is warranted. Like i said, i'm not against differing opinions. I never said the PS3 being the best is universal fact, just basingon my experience. If you disagree with me, its cool. :)
What I said was a light hearted tribute and a bit of satire.
This comes off as saying that they lied because Kinect has no buttons. That's what you stated and my reply was that they used a controller for comparison. You're arguing a point I never made.
Allow me to direct you to your homeland: http://www.sonydefenseforce.com/
Its all good. :)
If i come across as insistent, then i'll try to tone it down a notch.
LOL, then i have to actually see him here and declare him my new best friend.
I like to think we all are each other's best friend. We are gamers are we not?
Gamers 4 life dawg!
Hrmmmm, I agree with everything Elsa said!
I think it would be much simpler (and therefore quicker) to detect a loud noise versus a specific gesture.
Indeed dude :)
Let's not call each other names, shall we? No one likes to be called a fanboy.
What? I shouldn't even ask you what gave you that idea but I'm not an asshole and I'm curious.
I'm not mad at anyone, I've been cool and had a joke, alls well in the works apart from you looking for a fight and being an Internet tough guy.
I never said they lied, What i'm saying is that until we actually use it, its hard to believe what they say.
The sony defense force site is hilarious though. Thanks for the link. :)
Well, he needs to put up a confident face amidst the negative feedback. I just don't think Kinect will be as good as the Playstation Move.
Stories like this always bug me. "Does ______ work? We asked the most biased person we could find!"
The test they did doesn't sound fair. One guy pushing a button and different person clapping their hands.
These dudes have an odd grasp on biomechanics and time.
No response. You know I'm not looking for a fight. And I want to apologise, I never realised I was a role model to you and I'm sorry I let you down.
If you give me another chance i promise to be the shining beacon of all that is good, it will be just like the old days except better because now I know what I stand to lose.
aww..thanks :)
But that is not a pretty sight, you know the thing you just described. I think Kaz has steered the Playstation brand well.
This seems like a liar liar situation. Or maybe that the Kinect technology can react that fast, but so far no game has been developed well enough to utilize it.
That's why its wiser to have motion controls that has something you can physically use to interact, like the the Wiimote or some thing that has improved upon it, the Playstation Move.
Agreed. Kutaragi was the asshole.
I personally think he meant to advertise the PS3 as a luxury device. Something you have to work hard to own, like a Ferrari. But it didn't take too well to gamers.
He meant well of course. But he will always be the father of the Playstation
