Microsoft investigating French Halo: ODST leak photo

Pro-tip: Microsoft isn’t keen on leaks, especially Halo-related ones.

CVG is reporting that a handful of French people have Halo: ODST in advance of its September release date. Some of these owners have been just too excited to not share their sweet score with the Internet. They’ve been posting (now-defunct) YouTube videos of their sweet score and drawing attention to the leak.

In response to the leak -- not the stupid behavior -- Microsoft has begun investigating Xbox LIVE accounts with ties to ODST. A representative told CVG that they will “take action” against any nefarious owners, but didn’t go into specifics.

At first it seemed like the spokesperson was hinting that any early owner -- either a pirate or a chap who purchases a legitimate disk from a crooked retailer -- would be in trouble with the platform publisher. Not true. Xbox LIVE’s Stephen Toulouse clarified on Twitter, stating that Microsoft “will not be banning legitimate customers from Xbox LIVE who play early.”

Good. That means it’s acceptable to convince a Toys R Us clerk to run to the storeroom and sell you a copy. Go Go Go!

Weird - I thought marketting companies loved leaks. It helps FUD campaigns, gets people talking about the product, and keeps the company in the news.

However, I could see why leaked copies of Halo ODST could be a problem. The campaign will probably be absolutely average (like Halo 3's campaign), and if the online updates are only incremental, than these French gamers can tell us things about Halo ODST that show how it is much less than any review site Microsoft sponsors with ads will portray it as in the review.

I also seem to remember Halo 2 getting leaked to the net in a French localized version back in 2004 or something. Funny coincidence.

ndshroede23 & ikoul:

I hope so, it's like they still haven't gotten out of the mindset of being occupied in WWII, so they rebel at every ample opportunity against ominous opressors, in this case, big-bad microsoft and equally tyrannical Bungie; badass. keep fighting the good (uphill) fight you sluts.

I played the Halo 2 leak back in the day. I actually enjoyed it more than the regular release. There's something odd about aliens speaking english, when they speak an incomprehensible language, they actually feel like aliens.

@ Toys R Us comment: Is that spoken from experience? lol, if that works, that'd be great. Too bad I pre-ordered the controller edition and paid off $50 already...

Wow, the French sure are crafty when it comes to this stuff. First Halo 2, now ODST. Lucky bastards get to try Firefight early, but I guess they aren't very lucky once they get banned. Really though, is it really worth it?

Well that's good. Not for Halo specifically because I'm not getting that early since I ordered it for cheap from Argos. But upon shopping around I can usually find someplace which will sell me games early :)

the story doesn't specify anything. it reads like gossip.

were these copies simply shipped to customers who pre-ordered online, because that would be understandable, or are we talking about a retail store that knowingly broke street date?
