Microsoft: Halo 3 sales to clobber Spider-Man 3's box office record photo

With already one million pre-order units out the door, Microsoft thinks Halo 3 is going to rake in $155 million on its first day sales, targetting Spider-Man's record-holding opening weekend of $151 million.

Talking to Variety, Chris Di Cesare, Microsoft's director of creative marketing, says they can do better than the first day Halo 2 sales, which brought in an astonishing $125 million. Creative marketing indeed -- this September, Halo 3 fever is going to be inescapable, with a marketing campaign that includes partnering with Pepsi, 7-11, Pontiac, and Burger King.

While a movie ticket averages at $10 (significantly lower than the price of next-gen titles, and not even taking into consideration the $130 Legendary Edition of Halo 3), Di Cesare gets to the point: "It's big business any way you cut it."

We won't have to wait that long to see if all of Microsoft's boasting isn't just loud yelling and chest thumping. Halo 3 blows up retail on September 25.

I hate Halo and the hype, but hopefully games will get more respect after one totally destroys the biggest movie weekend ever.

I was just posting in another thread that I think Halo 3 is going to be a mild dissappointment in sales.

So what Microsoft, it's not about the price of the ticket or game, it's the amount of fan's. Spiderman fans are millions, Halo fans are about 1 million. The amount that Spiderman rakes in, in toys and other merchandise of such is insane, so Halo can't compare to total profit. Plus, Spiderman made like 400 million thus far in box office and wait until DVD. Halo Can't compare, video games will never compare.

Peace.

@Bruceleethree, you are absolutely correct, people are spending 60 dollars or more on a game, movies are what, 8 bucks? Per-capita revenue is much higher. From a business perspective though, it will turn a lot of heads.

While this is a nice target to shoot for, it's still a LONG ways off from the ACTUAL gross from the spiderman movie. People see it multiple times, and then it gets released again for home use, which is a-whole-nother benchmark in itself. Plus, I still feel that Halo has always been overhyped. It's good, but it's not the end all-be all of FPSs.

OMG Spider-Man 3 did huge box office and it was like one of the worst movies evaaar. I think once you factor in all the toys and special edition Halo 3 versions (I preordered the one that comes with a Warthog and a Bungie employee) the money mark could be up there with Spider-man 3. Who cares though, it's not like Microsoft is hurting for money right now.

loll gotta the M$ way .... loll halo bigger than spiderman lolllll most people don't even know about halo series (not talking about gamers here) and for the gamers many have PS2 and for them halo means nothing at all. I have halo 2 and a new halo will not make me buying a 360 full of bugs

having a 360 right now it's like buying and old gaming system .... the month after a new version is out with more improvement for less ... and you feel rip off ... that's the M$ way !

That've already sold over $599,900,000 Million worth of copys, and that's if every copy was at the regular $59.99 price (meaning it's actully probly a lot more with Legendary and Collecters Edition copys).

There are quite a few people in these comments underestimating the power of teh Halos. The fanbase is rabid and loyal. Halo 2 is more active on Live than most Xbox 360 games. I believe Gears of War was actually the first game to ever surpass Halo 2 in online activity.

And Quest, you should just stop using the internet.

Quest, man, please stop talking. I just lost a few points off of my above-average IQ - *polishes monocle* - after reading your comment. Please, take some English typing classes. And stop being a fanboy douche, too.

Anyway, yeah, I could easily see this being a bit of a disappointment, saleswise. It could go either way, really. But bruceleethree, I've got to disagree, there are definitely more than a million Halo fans out there. Not as many as Spiderman of course, since Spiderman's been around for several decades, and in various different forms of media. Besides, if it makes more money, that's all that matters to the big companies. Money talks, and that's the only way the industry will get people's attention. Whether you like Halo or not, we need to get behind the popular kid and support it, if we want games to become more accepted.

Sharpless is right in a lot of points. I don't care for Halo much, and lot my skills in first person shooters since I dropped out of Counter Strike many years ago, but I'm not going to be ignorant to the fact that Halo is big and will make lots of money. Will it beat Spiderman in fan base? Never. But Halo has way more than a million fans and it will most likelt beat Spiderman 3's numbers moneywise. Granted, each Halo solt is AT LEAST 5 spiderman 3 tickets... but still...

...I'm just sayin'...

Halo is not that great of a game, It's pretty much on the same level as Madden and these are two of the most overhyped games in history of games. The graphics are very meh. They should change the art style so they can make it look more realistic then i'll think about picking it up.

Right before Halo 3 comes out. Given the choice between true love or that videogame in exchange for the price of the game... which would most consumers choose?

Even if they could later on have the game or find true love.

How dare you compare Halo to Madden. Blasphemer.

And more realistic? I'm pretty sure the Halo art style is about as realistic as you can make a game about a cyborg that shoots aliens on a ring-shaped world manufactured by an ancient race of space-people.
