Speaking with OXM, Xbox LIVE general manager Marc Whitten recently commented on why the current Xbox 360 dashboard, in addition to the Marketplace, will be replaced for something entirely different this fall.
In regards to 360 owners, he says: "they might not have known they could look at photos. They might not know they could plug in their iPods or watch movies. We found out that when they did know, they were much happier and felt like they were getting more value."
Marc goes on to say that "when we designed our Marketplace we expected 100-200 items to be in there." With that number now in the range of 20,000, he concludes that "it's too hard to find content and people get lost in the user interface."
I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment. And because the new interface "isn't about removing anything," your collection of themes and Gamer Pics will continue to function once the update hits. Happy now?

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Let me keep my blades
fuck the haters!
I seriously doubt the new system is going to be harder to use...

As for their corporate policy? I hope the optional avatars aren't the sign of a complete shift - but - this was all shown at E3 where Fallout 3, Gears of War 2, and a litany of other intensive games weren't even shown.
I truly believe the apocalyptic fears of the 360 turning into a Wii are due of the horrible (ly useless) presentation of E3 this year.
P.S. So, seriously looked for why you guys are using Workman's icon. Is this in celebration of him predicting FFXIII or something?
I also want an avatar. Yeah, I said it. Tell me you wouldn't use it if they put out a Dtoid helmet accessory.
Because I was told that they were totally getting rid of gamerpics completely.
Somebody clear dat up for me plz?
I already pay money for Xbox Live, why is my dashboard littered with ads? The ads also obstruct the themes for which Microsoft charges money. Sony definitely has Microsoft beat on that front.
I like the look of the new interface. It's definately much cleaner than the blades, and as someone who uses their xbox a lot for media (pictures, videos etc...) I'm looking forward to it.
Personally I think the UI was too cluttered with the blades and the Marketplace was really getting clumsy to navigate. I'm looking forward to how my 360 will look after this update.
Just saying, STFUJPG. Also, hairy cocks.
I don't like the blades and i dont like the new look either. Well maybe i like it a little bit more then the blades... SWOOSH!
I say we disregard this explanation and continue hating it for no apparent reason.
Also, off topic, but why has everyone changed their avatar to the dancing girl? I've been on vacation for a week and I come back and everyone's avatars are the same now....
Glitch in the system. I've been trying to get rid of this dancing girl for days.
Thats all I needed to hear.
With billions in they really can't afford to vie for second against the PS3 so they are going to convert the XBOX360 into a
Apple\Wii\Xbox360 mashup to try for the 'Dolla Billz'
Also, MS has stated that they will "strongly encourage" users to move over to the avatars. Which means, we'll let you use gamerpics for now, to get you to shut your faces, but eventually we are going to phase them out.
Hopefully, I'll eventually be able to buy a fallout power armor suit so I can totally cover the little fu*ker up.
I hope you're not serious....
leave my blades alone though
Derp derp derp.
@GuitarAtomic
I bet there will be some cool clothing items to cloth your avator in. I would not be surprised at some COG or Mjolnor armor. But probably more likely virtual logo t-shirts but we will have to see.
Actually I found the rev 1 of the launch dashboard to be pretty eay to navigate, yet with every "ehancment" they made....things became harder to find......WTG!
Home Avatars - Mii's = 360 Avatars.
Have they honestly stooped that low to run out of ideas and straight rip?
Oh, can't forget the X360Waggle...
PC, Mac, and different builds of Linux are vastly different but still retain the same general feeling of being a home computer interface.
It's a free update intended to make the console more user friendly, there really is nothing to get pissy about.
