Microsoft explains why the 360's user interface needed a makeover photo

Speaking with OXM, Xbox LIVE general manager Marc Whitten recently commented on why the current Xbox 360 dashboard, in addition to the Marketplace, will be replaced for something entirely different this fall.

In regards to 360 owners, he says: "they might not have known they could look at photos. They might not know they could plug in their iPods or watch movies. We found out that when they did know, they were much happier and felt like they were getting more value."

Marc goes on to say that "when we designed our Marketplace we expected 100-200 items to be in there." With that number now in the range of 20,000, he concludes that "it's too hard to find content and people get lost in the user interface."

I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment. And because the new interface "isn't about removing anything," your collection of themes and Gamer Pics will continue to function once the update hits. Happy now?

I think it's pretty nice. Very Apple-ish and sleek. Now if it runs smoother and faster than the current dashboard, I'll be VERY impressed.

I guess once a company hits it big with one type of interface, the whole corporate machine is there to follow.

I don't understand the die hard attachment to the cluttered blade system.
I seriously doubt the new system is going to be harder to use...

-------

As for their corporate policy? I hope the optional avatars aren't the sign of a complete shift - but - this was all shown at E3 where Fallout 3, Gears of War 2, and a litany of other intensive games weren't even shown.

I truly believe the apocalyptic fears of the 360 turning into a Wii are due of the horrible (ly useless) presentation of E3 this year.

You can still use the blades. All you have to do is press the guide button. Everything is in the blade system except for ads. You can even access it in game, so you don't need to use the new interface.

All this is is a more 3D version of the PS3's XMB, which people seem to be forgetting.

the blades look shite on my hd tv either they shouldve upgraded to a vector based blade or do this path with a complete revamp i think it looks clean and great. they can keep the avatars but the revamp is a great plus for me and my media centre/tv :)

The blades are ready to die. They had a good run, but let them go in peace.

I really don't care. Regardless of the UI, I'll get used to it. I don't use the photos, music, movie downloads, game downloads, etc. often enough to make it an issue. As long as I can quickly load up and play a game on the HDD/disc or start up WMC, I'm fine.

P.S. So, seriously looked for why you guys are using Workman's icon. Is this in celebration of him predicting FFXIII or something?

I like the new look. The blade system was getting a little bit too cluttered and confusing to navigate.

I also want an avatar. Yeah, I said it. Tell me you wouldn't use it if they put out a Dtoid helmet accessory.

I'm not sure if i've heard the entire story... Is it that we can choose wether to have a gamerpic or an avatar? Cause I'm all for THAT...

Because I was told that they were totally getting rid of gamerpics completely.

Somebody clear dat up for me plz?

I loved the blades when they first came out, but it really does take a long time to navigate the store these days. I'm excited to try out the new system and I have my fingers crossed that it stays as ad-free as the screenshots.

I already pay money for Xbox Live, why is my dashboard littered with ads? The ads also obstruct the themes for which Microsoft charges money. Sony definitely has Microsoft beat on that front.

@RAB: You get a choice between your gamerpic or an avatar. You can also use all your themes with the new interface. Check out Major Nelson's latest podcast for more info on the update.

I like the look of the new interface. It's definately much cleaner than the blades, and as someone who uses their xbox a lot for media (pictures, videos etc...) I'm looking forward to it.

Agreed with HP. Seriously guys, all your bitching and complaining isn't going to change anything. I understand if you don't like it, but too bad so sad it's happening.

Personally I think the UI was too cluttered with the blades and the Marketplace was really getting clumsy to navigate. I'm looking forward to how my 360 will look after this update.

Just saying, STFUJPG. Also, hairy cocks.

I'm interested. The old system looks fairly outdated and somewhat cluttered. Something streamlined would be good. And I think it's never a bad idea to copy Apple's designs.

So, if this UI refresh is meant to make navigation and browsing smoother, will the plan to delist 'underperforming' XBLA titles stay intact?

It's simple. They updated the interface because they saw with a two year lead Nintendo just beat them in their best market.
With billions in they really can't afford to vie for second against the PS3 so they are going to convert the XBOX360 into a
Apple\Wii\Xbox360 mashup to try for the 'Dolla Billz'

I don't mind the UI update. I just hate the avatars with their stupid, simpleton, casual faces. You should be allowed to choose a darker, more mature avatar and not be stuck with only a goofy-ass one.

Also, MS has stated that they will "strongly encourage" users to move over to the avatars. Which means, we'll let you use gamerpics for now, to get you to shut your faces, but eventually we are going to phase them out.

Hopefully, I'll eventually be able to buy a fallout power armor suit so I can totally cover the little fu*ker up.

I am seriouslly amazed. When they announced this it seemed like I was the only person who was looking forward to the update/avatars. Its nice to know I'm not the only one :) I don't know if I will use an avatar. I'm very attached to my gamerpic I've used it sense day one of xbox live on the 360. I just don't know what to do!

There are games that use gamer pics for representation in game such as the end match screen in bomber man. But even the video of Uno Rush showed what appeared to be a standard gamer pic. So I think gamer pics are going no were I suspect you will have an Avatar and a gamer pic but have an option to make a gamer pic based on your avatar.

I bet there will be some cool clothing items to cloth your avator in. I would not be surprised at some COG or Mjolnor armor. But probably more likely virtual logo t-shirts but we will have to see.

My "FIRST IMPRESSION" of the new dashboard is "wow, way to waste alot of screen space"

Actually I found the rev 1 of the launch dashboard to be pretty eay to navigate, yet with every "ehancment" they made....things became harder to find......WTG!

XMB + Wii Channel Panels (windows) = 360's new layout.
Home Avatars - Mii's = 360 Avatars.

Have they honestly stooped that low to run out of ideas and straight rip?

Oh, can't forget the X360Waggle...

There's only so many ways you can present a GUI.

PC, Mac, and different builds of Linux are vastly different but still retain the same general feeling of being a home computer interface.

It's a free update intended to make the console more user friendly, there really is nothing to get pissy about.
