Microsoft explains Live outage causes photo

Over at CES, Microsoft representative Albert Penello confirmed the suspicions held by most folks able to perform basic deductive reasoning; namely that recent Live downtime and connectivity issues were largely caused by a massive surge in Xbox Live sign ups. Penello went on to say that in addition to the deluge of new memberships a reduced staff of Xbox Live team members contributed to the length of the outages.  You don't say.

Admittedly, Microsoft could have more adequately prepared for the inevitable onslaught of Xbox Live sign ups and probably shouldn't have reduced their staff considering the likelihood of little tykes the world over getting an Xbox 360 for Christmas.  However the number of sign ups is simply staggering, with Penello reporting over 10 million people signing up and attempting to play in a single day.

Penello also suggested that the issues with Xbox Live have been addressed, yet it still seems that most of us know someone still experiencing problems.  In spite of the fact that some are still reporting issues connecting to Xbox Live or recovering gamertags it seems Microsoft is handling this as best they can (with a few extreme exceptions).  Although nothing has been said from Microsoft in this regard, it's probably a safe bet that they'll be better prepared next year; with a full staff of Xbox Live team members pissed that they have to work on Christmas.

Shoot! I'm still waiting for my free arcade game, and it'd be a good one! I can only play uno so much.

Microsoft's asinine stupidity is mine game. I wasn't on Live during the holidays, so I didn't get smacked around as a result, and I get a free game out of it. Lulz.

I thought they were at 11 million. I wish they'd just shut down Live and sort out the problem with no one complaining about all the games they can't play.

10 million new subscribers seems a bit high, considering they’ve sold what, like, 17.7 million total worldwide so far?

so yesterday I had to experience the horror of lag that plauged me 360 and many others during Rainbow six. Shit makes no sense. The small amount of time I do play on live right now and we just play the obvious blame game.

just get it workin and give me my optional XBLA game.

The XBL crisis will be fine once the first 6 million of the 10 million new customers experience the RROD. It's just natural selection, except that the awesome console you just payed 400 bucks for dies within 12 months. I can't wait for my 2nd RROD!

I'm not buying the 10 million signing up or even being on Live at 1 given moment. I just don't believe it, call me a skeptic...I think its just an excuse to make it look better for them. They basically didn't have enough power or people to work so to make it look all rosey they say "well, we had SOOO many people signing up and loving our system/online that we couldn't keep up with demand" BULLSHIT!! They F'd up and trying to come out looking nice. Thats all!

Beat me to it scott78945,

"We just can't handle all the people playing our games!"
are you kidding, you're telling me that you never expected that so many people would sign on to xboxlive that you don't know what to do with them all?
Did you expect that every xbox sold would mean someone new on xboxlive?

what crap...

How can they be better prepared next holiday season when they haven't solved the problems from this holiday system. Me and my buddy will play an hour or two earlier than we usually do because we know at a certain time we have problems. Fuck MS. I will just play my PS3 more.

man, that 10 million sign up doesn't make any sense...unless they mean that ABOUT 10 million 1-MONTH FREE GOLD MEMBERSHIPS were activated...then that might make sense but even then the numbers don't exactly match up to units sold...at least, i wouldn't think so...

I dont't think they ment 10 million signed up they said 10 million tried to sign on. Now being the holidays you had more people off work with existing accounts and more people playing that just got systems for the holiday. It really was a combination thing.
konchu's Avatar
konchu at 01/11/2008 16:50
Wasnt there an article the other day saying live silver and gold members were at 10 Million if this was signups I would assume there would be inbetween a 50%-100% growth in live(cant remember what the last numbers they claimed the were at but I am sure it was over 5 million) and if that was the case I think there would be more noise about it in the news.

About that 10 million sentence- I think the sentence is worded poorly, but is trying to say: The number of people attempting to play and the number of people who made new accounts combined was over 10 million.
