Microsoft: Exclusives are 'a little less important' photo

Germany's Xbox 360 product manager Boris Schneider-Johne has downplayed console exclusives and commented on their waning importance this generation. Stating that the influence of exclusives on console sales is decreasing more and more, Schneider-Johne also touched on how it's nearly impossible for a developer to "commit" itself to one console:

What we see today is that the influence of exclusive titles on the sales curves becomes ever smaller... In addition, we are in a situation where there is a head-to-head race on several consoles and nobody is super clear in leadership — especially in matters of the PlayStation 3 against Xbox 360... Given the production costs of the games, it is hardly possible for developers to commit themselves exclusively to someone...

Now Sony makes its own games for the [PS3] console, we make our own games for the [Xbox 360] console. The titles are exclusive, as they are also attempts [to] turn out the best of the console, but someone like Electronic Arts or Activision can have a business model of rarely developing for a console exclusively. Therefore, the exclusive title is a little less important.

Microsoft understands what we already know, that the third party exclusive is a dying breed. Well, don't worry about it too much guys -- you still have Too Human, eh? Killer app right there, son.

I never understood all this stigma over exclusives in the first place. To me, the only good exclusive title is one that uses the unique features of a given console in a way that is impossible to reproduce on another console that lacks them, and from what I've seen, few recent exclusive titles do so.

Ah Jim...still with the Too Human hate. Can't undestand it really; I happen to love the game and have been playing on/off for the last few weeks.

Then again I despise, with every part of my being no less, pretty much everything that comes out of Koei =P.

I should also mention I agree with Excel when it comes to exclusives. If its' something that absolutely can only be done on that one system, then keep it there. But even then there haven't been too many that do that.

I was almost tempted to mention Lair, since it uses the Sixaxis to control your dragon. But now they've released the analog control patch, so realistically the game could be done on the 360 as well now.

Tales of Vesperia, M$?

and lol, without Nintendo's exclusives they wouldn't even survive this generation...imo.

@The-Excel: "good exclusive title is one that uses the unique features of a given console in a way that is impossible to reproduce on another console that lacks them"

I'm thinking things like PES08, The Conduit, Metroid Prime 3, Warioware: Smooth Moves, MoH:H2, Boom Blox, etc?

I agree that stuff like Brawl and SMG aren't really making unique use of the WiiMote, but since when must the Wii be a gimmick-only console? But still, you can't really say Brawl and SMG are bad games, just that its a pity they're exclusive.

Exclusives are ALL important to initial hardware sales, when your rival has similar hardware then this is the only thing to separate you. Exclusives can focus all their attention on one set of hardware constraints without compromise.

Yeah, I don't believe any of this for a second. Exclusives are quite important for everyone. If there were no exclusives, people would just buy the most powerful system and be done with it.

Also, this coming from the company that paid how many millions just for exclusive downloadable content? Yeah, they really think exclusives are less important.

Exclusives are definitely important, but the high barrier to entry with respect to console prices - in addition to the necessity of high revenues to recoup investments - perhaps do 'weaken' their power.

Furthermore, not every exclusive can be considered a triple-A project. 'Fatal Inertia' and 'Vampire Rain' were once 360 exclusives, ya know.
